The Suns do not have bird-rights to Craig. Suns are limited to offering him a max of 120% of his current salary or $2M. I think he's gonna get paid a bit more.
The Suns hold the early bird rights to Payne. Suns are limited to offering him a max of 175% of his current salary or $1.9M. He's definitely gonna get paid more.
We could sign either of them with part of the MLE ($9.5M) or BAE ($3.7M). So if the Suns plan to keep Payne and Craig it looks like they are going to need to dip significantly into their two exceptions.
Payne could eat up most of the MLE and Craig a chunk of the BAE. It means Jones really won't have much to offer free agents other than minimum vet contracts and a chance for a chip. For example, Payne was offered $7M and Craig $2.5M that would use up all the MLE. The Suns would have the BAE to use on a FA. Or if Craig took the full BAE and Payne $7M for the MLE then that's only $2.5M left of the MLE for free agents.
Does this sound right!??
Early Qualifying Veteran Free Agent (aka “Early Bird”) Exception: A team may re-sign its own free agent to a contract with a first-year salary of up to the greater of (a) 175% of the player's salary in the last season of his prior contract,
or (b) 105% of the average player salary for the prior season. We can pay to Cameron Payne in his next contract around $10M per year. No need to use any exception.
But I do not think we will need to pay him that much. Probably $7-8M per year would be enough.
Perfect ... so the average NBA salary is $8.2M ... we can give him up to $8.6M and still have MLE and BAE for Craig and other free agents.
Bobby Marks tweeted that we would be able to pay him between $10-$11 million which he thought would be his market value. There are a ton of FA PGs though. The Clips are in the same boat with Reggie Jackson.
But FA PGs include Lowry, Conley, Schroder, Jackson, Dinwiddie, Ball, Graham, Rose, Dragic, McConnell and Payne...at least...plus there will be draftees coming in.
So I don't think the market will be as high as most people think it will be for most of these guys.
