Booker trash talking Summer league scrubs as he dominates them. I love it. Kobe style, show no mercy.

I would love to see a comparison of Booker from last summer league to this summer league. His improvement over one year is amazing and makes me very excited for the future.

Yeah, Book was having a decent 3rd quarter, then they pissed him off and he took it up a notch. Really like the intensity they all seemed to show. Ulis is small but is very smart defensively, played great position defense and used his speed to get over under and through screens to constantly put pressure on his man. Bender plays with an edge to him, pushing people and not allowing himself to be intimidated.

Also funny people still put Russell in the same cloud as Booker, KAT, and Porzingis. If Russell wasn't on the Lakers everyone would be calling him a bust right now.

Saw some pessimism about Dragan Bender's box score line -- I'm not a Suns fan, but as someone who has watched him a good amount over the last couple of years, I took this game as a huge positive.

The most important thing to me was that we saw the "pre- Maccabi Tel Aviv unicorn skills" throughout the entirety of the game. Bender's well known for his ability to push the ball (as a 7 footer...), attack closeouts with drives, defensive quickness, and the vision/feel to find the open pass. We saw all of this today against Portland.

For all the things he's well known for, impeccable "knockdown" shooting is not one of them. He was largely drafted for his potential to stretch and how well his 3PT shot has improved over time (which suggests continual improvement)... not for his current level of shooting. His shot will be inconsistent at first, so be patient!

Congrats btw! His BBIQ and fluidity at 7FT is absurd.

Love the fact that right after Vonleh did that **** to Book, Ulis pushes him and Kriss and Alan are full speed toward him. So he tangles with book, gets chucked by Ulis, turns to talk crap to them, then Chriss is 6 inches from him in his face, he turned to talk crap to him, and Alan is right on his other shoulder. He seemed overwhelmed for a second, love the intensity.

Yeah his game is so much more polished this time around. His playmaking and movement off the ball were some things that really stood out to me this game. He was doing a really good job of setting up other players off the dribble when the defense had to help off to stop his drive and made the right passes a lot, but he still had a few too many turnovers. Book's gotten good at getting his man off balance before he comes off of off-ball screens with changes of pace, and he makes the right reads based on how his man defends him off the screen with his curl cuts, flares, etc, which is really valuable skill for someone who can catch-and-shoot like him. I was also impressed by his footwork down in the post, he had a really nice quick baseline spin in the first quarter that he missed the lay up on, a great up-and-under move on the baseline in the post late in the game, and made some good passes when the defense was collapsing on him down there. I think Pat Connaughton was a good match up for him on defense as well, he's extremely athletic and can get to the bucket, but I thought Booker did a decent job of making things difficult for him.

Steve smith's opening in the Bender video is painful to listen to.

Pelton's grades:
Devin Booker, Phoenix Suns: A

After averaging 19.2 points following the All-Star break as a rookie, Booker is overqualified to play in Las Vegas, and he showed it during Saturday's opener for the Suns.

Booker was automatic when open beyond the arc, making three triples in five attempts, and also showed improvement creating his own shot off the dribble and setting up teammates en route to 28 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Eleven of those points came in a stretch of less than three minutes during the third quarter.

Dragan Bender, Phoenix Suns: A-

The No. 4 overall pick was more impressive than his stat line (12 points and seven rebounds) would suggest. While he couldn't find the touch from beyond the arc, missing six of his seven 3-point attempts, Bender impacted the game in myriad other ways.

He was effective with the ball in his hands, pushing the ball off defensive rebounds and beating defenders off the dribble to set up good scoring opportunities. Bender also knocked down a couple of hook shots.

Marquese Chriss, Phoenix Suns: D

While Bender and Booker impressed, it was a rough start for Phoenix's other lottery pick. Chriss missed eight of his 10 shot attempts, forcing things with the ball in his hands and struggling to finish around the rim despite his impressive athleticism -- including three shots that got blocked.

The reviews were worse defensively, where Chriss frequently found himself out of position and got caught reaching the wrong way when defending one-on-one.

Was at the game today, awesome seeing the young guns in person, especially book who is legit and was leading these guys all they. Have to disagree with peloton on bender and chriss. Bender pushed the ball well but looked a little lost. Has a long way to go to have an impact for the team. chriss played with tons of hussle, rebounded, blocked, and had a few really good offensive sequences. Overall, very optimistic about these guys...but they are visibly young and will take 1-2 years to be impact players

I would have to disagree with you. I thought Pelton was spot on. Bender was very impressive despite not being able to make a shot. He still has a long way to go but I never expected to see the fluidity and game maturity I saw from him.

Chriss was impressive in his few highlight moments but pretty much lost the rest of the time. He's clearly as advertised, incredible athlete but clueless. I can only hope we're going to give him the basketball education he so obviously lacks. And that does not include throwing him to the wolves, he simply isn't ready for NBA court time yet. Hopefully we hire a full time basketball tutor to work with him in addition to frequent D League assignments. Granted, this was just one summer league game and he might show better as the games progress but right now, he looks to be a full-on project.
