This makes some sense. I definitely felt like the MLE money should go towards that 1/2 backup slot.

I just looked up Jalen Smith highlights and he looks good. Passes the eye test on O and looks like a good weakside shot blocker. Regular and advanced stats also look good for him. I couldn't find any clips of his defense though, aside from the blocks. I agree with what some others said that he looks like a 5, not a 4. I think we could still use him, and if Jones thought he was BPA then he probably did the right thing, but the parallel between picking Cam is very strong... I'm willing to give Jones the benefit of the doubt that it's a smarter pick than it looked, but we're picking a guy 10 spots earlier than he was projected again. If it turns out he can defend well out in space then I think he'll be really great for us. If not then it looks like he could still give us some nice bench minutes, but how many of those will we really need at 5 if Saric comes back and Ayton doesn't hit the juice again?

This guy is full of energy....he dunks hard and maybe that helps Ayton finish hard too...it also could help replace Oubre in some ways as the guy that gets people pumped up..he dunks hard. He blocks hard. He hits the 3. People liked Okongwu a lot but this guy is way more versatile.

He's not a bad player at all. Maryland was terrible whenever he was out. He can do most everything except dribble / playmake (which he is comically bad at, but that's okay). But I still won't defend the pick at the position he was selected with the guys on the table and the near 100% certainty that we could've traded back and still gotten him.

I did mention that there should be immense value in the 2nd round, And pushed picking up 2nd round picks for depth right? I can't imagine needing to keep Kaminsky with a much better version of him.in Smith on board. We should pick up a 2nd or two for two of these players, And let them replace Okobos' And Jerome's position. Then we'd absorb them for a lower cost into Kaminskys' salary. And then can still pursue a quality veteran backup guard.

GMs would have suspicions on what other teams needs, so if Bane is not on anyones radar in the first round, then teams who are interested can wait.

I strongly believe that a few teams mid lottery to top 20 could use Jalen Smith, particularly Boston... they probably signalling interest on other players waiting to nab Smith quietly... but James Jones smelt it and pulled the trigger (speculation on my side), but clearly Suns need a big man next to Ayton since Baynes and Diallo are out... Saric has an 11 inch vertical so he doesnt do the job the Suns need for a big... still very useful player though so I'm happy to keep Saric as he is the "new" Dudley.

Yeah, it's nice to have some athleticism behind Ayton. Saric moves like he has cement in his shoes. I like him as a player but he's not great.

There is also the possibility we lose Saric if someone offers him more than we want to match.

He was projected to go to the Celtics at 14 as well. It doesn't really make sense trading down 1-3 picks.

I don't know Jalen Smith, but I didn't know anyone else really. I felt PF was our biggest need, and he seems like he can fit the bill, so I'll take it.
SHAZAM!

Suns traded Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder and 4 1st round picks and a swap so some Vegas Bookies would like us.

his body type and movements do resemble more a Richaun Holmes/Noel type center than Siakam type PF though, if he can't play with Ayton that is going to be a problem.

Could have had Reed, Terry/Flynn, and Riller at this rate.

I doubt anyone is trading a second for Kaminsky...they probably assume we won't pick up his option and can sign him if they want with an exception if they don't have cap space.

Okobo is one that could have value since he is young..people theoretically could still think he has upside, but of course there is Theo Maledon who is another French PG who you control for longer if you want...or Mannion.

After losing in the bottom of the 6th on a walkoff, i"m finally back to see what all the fuss is about.
Have we convinced ourselves Smith was the right pick?
And more importantly, was he?

I hadn't even checked nbadraft.net, but it appears they were closest to what happened..they had Deni at 7, Williams at 4, Okongwu at 6, Vassell at 11..

They had Jalen Smith at 13. They had us taking Kira Lewis.
