Re: NBA Draft and NCAA Basketball
With all this Ayton love around here.... do we really want to hang our hopes on a center with motor issues? The disappointing big man is one of the more consistent themes of NBA history.

Re: NBA Draft and NCAA Basketball
This mock has us taking Sexton with our pick, Wendell Carter with the next one, and then some guy named Dzanan Musa with our third 1st rounder.

This basketballinsiders one has Ayton going 5th and Bamba going 12th to us, after getting Sexton at 7.

Getting Sexton and Bamba would be an amazing draft.
But why stop there. I want Doncic and Ayton.

That basketballinsiders mock was the first one I've seen that was as enthusiastic about Duke's big men as I am. I have Bagley and Donkic in my top tier, Porter and Ayton behind them, and Carter in the big group after those 4. I don't yet know how to rank Carter, Williams, Bamba, McCoy. I don't have a good feel for the PG crop yet and I don't have a feel for the wings AT ALL because we're pretty loaded with recent draft picks at the wings.

From what I read consensus seems to be something like:
Doncic
Bagley
Ayton
Porter
Bamba
Sexton
Knox
Jackson
Doncic
Bagley
Ayton
Porter
Bamba
Sexton
Knox
Jackson

I wonder if we'll take a chance on Trae Young tho.
He seems to be our type of PG.

Re: NBA Draft and NCAA Basketball
This just in... Bagley is really good.
Carter Jr. is no slouch either. I agree with his comp as Al Horford / Al Jefferson on NBAdraft.net
Grayson Allen is a baller too...
Maybe we tank harder? This draft is freakin stacked.

Did you not watch tonights game? We're terrible, we don't need to tank to be a 20 win team this year.
With that said, Miami potentially losing Whiteside for a bit with his knee issue along with some of the East looking a little better than expected is making that Heat pick look like it could be better we thought going into the season.

Did not watch. I live out of state. We may be terrible... but we aren’t as terrible as some others. Here’s looking at you Chicago, Dallas, Suckremento and Hotlanta. The tank competition is just beginning.
I’m hoping that Miami and Milwaukee lose just the right amount of games. Three high picks would be amazing.

We've had the easiest schedule in the league so far according to RPI and are still bottom 5 in standings, so I wouldn't say we're pretty terrible in our own right.
I'm thinking Dallas will eventually start to pick things up this year and get around our record, Carlisle is too good of a coach and Cuban is very vocally against tanking. Chicago should see some improvement from getting Zach LaVine back fairly soon, but I don't know if it'll be enough to catch us. Atlanta and Sacramento though...

I think the only team guaranteed to finish behind us is Chicago. Sacramento has some quality vets who have not performed up to their capabilities in the slightest (Hill, Randolph), so I could see them getting better. I think you are right on Dallas. Carlisle has them playing much better of late, and Brooklyn hasn't been that awful despite the injuries. The real question mark to me is Atlanta, who still has some decent vets and a very good coach in Budenholzer, but seems to have some chemistry issues and don't seem to be running his system all that well (more one on one play with less passing and worse shooting than before).
Also, I would not be opposed or surprised if we sat Booker to let his nagging toe issue heal fully and properly towards the end of the year.

My projection:
Bottom 3 - Chicago, Atlanta, Sacrmento
Bottom 6 - Dallas, Phoenix, Brooklyn
-----------
Wildcards - Memphis, Clippers, New York, Orlando, Lakers

Re: NBA Draft and NCAA Basketball
Watching this Duke - Indiana game Wendell Carter is already better than Chriss. I haven’t even seen Jaren Jackson Jr and Brandon McCoy play yet. Wow. The future is bright.

Re: NBA Draft and NCAA Basketball
At draft time I would of said Chriss had a higher ceiling than Carter but maybe that was more hope than merit.
Sexton reminds me of a PG Josh Jackson he attacks the rim and is athletic but there's no nuance to his game and looked messy yesterday going 6-19.
Kevin Knox looks to the hot player outside the top 5 with his last 5 games - 18 points, 5 rebounds @ 55% FG. Callipari has mentioned he's now understanding how to use him and it's reflecting in his play.
Mikal Bridges has a huge wingspan for a wing, elite defender with improved shooting, looks like a Covington / Ariza type. If he ever gets some handling ability he could take the next step like Butler / Leonard. He's up there as my favourite multi-year player.

I don't know if Trae Young is Steph Curry or Aaron Brooks on a hot streak.

Re: NBA Draft and NCAA Basketball
Bagley's IQ and basketball-feel is definitely elite, its just that I think as a PF or Center, he does not have elite length... and will be bothered. Duncan had/has elite physical traits/length....
But smart players who know how to play basketball at an elite level will find ways to contribute, so thats a thing for sure. He might end up similar to Bosh, Horford or young Jermaine O'Neal at worse. (Good scorer and solid rebounder with passing skills)
He's narrow too... 7'0 wingspan (6'10 without shoes) and 8'9 standing reach.... thats tweener standing reach.

Re: NBA Draft and NCAA Basketball
I think McDonough will love Jaren Jackson in our range as he's made up of traits from Bender and Chriss combined.
All the things you hear from him about modern bigs - Length, Run The Floor, Defensive Versatility, Outside Shooting.
My guess at his big board at our range would be something like: Doncic, Ayton, Bagley, Porter, Jackson, Bamba, Knox.
Each has significant size or athletic advantage at position and either developed or flashes of skillset.

Re: NBA Draft and NCAA Basketball
Let's embrace this bad (young) team and TANK! It sucks that we have to wait until this summer and next year to improve, but that is the reality of the situation.
The 2018 draft appears to be a very, VERY good class. Dare I say generational? Yes, for those keeping track at home, I did say the same thing about the 2017 class and it turned out not to be "generational", but this time I mean it.
I think we are 8-10 deep in terms of franchise players. Bagley, Ayton, Porter (hurt), Wendell Carter, Jaren Jackson, McCoy, Donic, Knox, Sexton, Bridges, Robert Williams... Mitchell Robinson will be a steal late. These current college athletes are all as good as or better than Chriss, Bender and Jackson - RIGHT NOW.
Quick fun exercise. Rank Fultz, Ball, Tatum, Jackson, DSJ, Issac vs. your 2018 top ten + Chriss and Bender. Here is mine:
1) Bagley
2) Ayton
3) Tatum
4) Porter
5) Doncic
6) Jaren Jackson, Jr.
7) Jonathan Issac
8) Wendell Carter
9) Bamba
10) Fultz
11) DSJ
12) Sexton
13) Lonzo Ball
14) Brandon McCoy
15) Mitchell Robinson
16) Josh Jackson
17) Kevin Knox
18) Robert Williams
19) Miles Bridges
20) Dragan Bender
21) M. Chriss
