Re: Booker OFFICIALLY Signs Extension with Suns
Remember some posters citing Leonard waiting as evidence that booker would or should? That **** matters.
Im not even totally sold on him being the best player on a championship team but they had to do it now. Phoenix is a bit of a sleeping giant as a destination city so id rather him be the recruitier than the recruitied.
I think Booker is more popular with peers than even his play warrants. He's from Mississippi so no real ties to an NBA city and now he's cool being here and knows he's here for 6 more years. If someone else like ayton or Bridges can show out he can present a very favorable situation to one of his friends the next few years.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming Wow! What a Ride!-H.S.T.

People (esp those on the GB) who think it's 'not worth' inking him now to maximize cap space in 2019 just don't understand the human element. It's just such an ask for someone put off guaranteed life changing money for the chance that the front office has what it takes to sign two near max guys. Unlike San Antonio, we don't exactly have the best track record to lean on and I wouldn't trust this front office to get it right either.
I agree with you that I'm not entirely sold on Book being the #1 guy on a championship team but I want to find out and the best way is to ink him up to a contract into his mid-20's and see how he develops.

I almost posted this last night....they say "he understood" but people in his camp were unhappy with the wait. Yeah, it's good to get done even though best case scenario would have been Booker saying "No, I'd prefer to wait for cap space to add a max star" but then we may not sign any star type anyway just due to player preferences which might make him unhappy. A lot could sour him, not necessarily on signing, but wanting out early. I still think our internal growth and perhaps if not a major addition next summer, some minor additions if needed.

Yeah, I'm not positive he's truly a max type guy, but so are a bunch of others who got them, so it may have been best not to start talking about a max early. But then again, another team (being that so many teams have cap space next summer) would have offered him a max, so in essence, in the NBA, with players who all assumed to be potential future all stars, you probably just have to bite the bullet.
And he could end up being a legendary scorer, and if he can even get to avg defense, maybe an all team guy, and above avg defense, more of a superstar. It might be a big ask, but you never know. Of course a lot of it will be tied to how good the team is. Curry being the all time best shooter was never recognized as a superstar until they got to the finals and won 73 games, etc.
Durant was in the playoffs in year 3, and advancing in year 4.

Most players who are on max or near max deals aren't really worth it. Yo could probably count on two hands the number of players who actually have the impact expected of a max level player. Booker to me falls squarely in that category of players who's impact just doesn't reflect that of a true max level superstar but it's just how players are getting paid these days and as you said, if we're not maxing him out, someone else will and I'd rather not take that chance to letting him get to the restricted FA.
I kind of put him in the same lane as a Dame Lillard level player. A 27ppg alpha scorer with good playmaking but questionable defense. With the right team around him, they were a mid to upper tier playoff team in the West but in isolation, like Booker this past season, I think he maxes out as a 2nd team all-NBA player. Dame to me is a near max player only because in the right system, he's a very high impact player but he's not on that level of true 1st team all-NBA superstars who are truly worthy of a max deal because he doesn't impact the game defensively unlike an Anthony Davis, KD, non-lazy Lebron and healthy Kawhi and his offensive impact is also not on the same level as a Curry or Harden either. So he's really on that 2nd/3rd team all-NBA level and that's where I think Booker projects to be. That's still a REALLY good player and he still has potential to get close to Harden/Curry level offense.

And it would be dropped and result in a turnover if it was to Len
