The most underrated aspect of drafting Jalen Smith is that now the Suns can run a 10 man lineup made up entirely of players able to shoot threes (if Ayton's shot comes along)

No riller or reed taken yet. I'd like to hope Jones is calling agents.

Just realized the Mavs took Terry...Carlisle sure does like those small guards...they had Barea (or I guess they still have him), had Yogi Ferrell, drafted Jalen Brunson a couple years ago and now Tyrell Terry. And of course they have Delon Wright.

1) Smith is not $8M per year. More like $4.25M
2) This draft was not considered a very deep draft. There was no real consensus #1 pick and in a COVID non-NCCA tourney year, it was really hard to gauge value.
2) Do you know for sure who the Suns wanted around 10th? No ... you only know what Gambo and others may have predicated and mocks. Those people didn't have interviews or workouts with the prospects.
3) Jones didn't draft Ayton. That was McD.
4) I am actually way more hopeful with Jones going forward with our drafts. He's not blinded by the 18-year-old uber athletes with potential. Shooters, defenders, high IQ guys, older players, character all matter.
1. $8.5 Mil guaranteed hitting the cap for Jalen.
2. Yes, it universally is. The draft has (FOR YEARS, because scouting happens more than just the year before), been considered as having strength in the middle and in its depth. There was no top, but that has nothing to do with depth. Many people liked the middle and bottom of this draft for value.
2b, Because you misnumbered: I have never contended we didn't want Smith so no idea what you are talking about. I know we were high on Bane and Kira and some others because we worked them out and interviewed them. Our head coach flew to their school.
3. What I stated, if you'd read it, is that Jones wouldn't have drafted Luka, because he did not do the vast majority of things Jones values. Jackson (coming out of school) screams as the guy Jones would have taken. A defender who shoots 3s and can pass. That's what Jackson was supposed to be.
4. There have been studies done. The safe guys you value are a dime a dozen and can be had at the vet minimum. Going for the stars is the statistically best way to draft. And again, you are describing exactly what I stated with point 3. We would not have taken Luka, or Booker, or hell even Amare, under Jones. And we're supposed to see that as a good thing so long as we have a team of Danny Green 3 & D players? Okay...

Jones was the assistant GM the owner had hired to take over for the current GM. If he felt strongly that Luka was the guy, you think he wouldn't have told Sarver to do it? Because I think he had Sarver's ear much more than McD at that point, and Ayton was not a star potential rookie because his D was still struggling. So he kind of did walk into exactly the situation you're describing except that he did have Booker. This league is about stars. The superteams win. For context, you need a number of all stars to win in this league. The role players are easy to find to play at the minimum and ring chase once you have the stars. Those 20 players are all that really moves the needle in any significant way.

Had there been any talk of the Suns and Reed? I doubt with Smith though that they'd consider Reed.

It must be exhausting to confront the reality of the situation--there isn't an excuse for the asset management of this team for Jones's entire tenure. This is universally accepted everywhere outside of this board apparently. It shouldn't be enough that Smith ends up good. I do think he'll be good. I just don't see the point of excusing the rest of this draft, which we cannot participate in because our GM committed what the smartest NBA writer of our time termed malpractice.= for an entire offseason.

We can all agree , i hope, that assets have been mismanaged. But he has consistently attained players who fit. He is betting on Booker and Ayton. Im not going to kill him for that.AtheJ415 wrote:This is the big thing that should concern everyone. This is an article quoting the Zach Lowe pieces about James Jones from a year ago. I'm telling you guys, Watch this kid carefully. Golden State knows what they're doing. This kid can be another Duncan Robinson. He is yet another great prospect that we apparently whiffed on here in the 2nd round.

Jones said he likes guys who can shoot and move the ball. He also likes defenders. Having played with LeBron and Nash, Luka definitely seems more like a guy he'd like than Ayton. He also went to scout him.
We won't know, so there really isn't a reason to argue about it.
Luka his more of Jones points of shooting, passing and defense than Ayton did. Ayton wasn't a shooter and is knock was defense...and of course he's not nearly the passer or shooter that Luka is...a not so insignificant number of people knocked Ayton's D as much or more than Toppin's was being knocked this year.

We really missed out on this one too! He would've been the perfect replacement for Oubre.

Yeah. If the draft is a crapshoot excusing complaining about reaches, doesn't that mean we should be getting more picks / chances at hitting something? There is value here and we dumped it for freaking Ty Jerome and b/c our GM bungled the Josh Jackson dumping, and our owner is too cheap to buy one.

OK, I need to see video of CP3, DB1, and Smith shooting hoops at Sarvers place tomorrow!
