Great Defensive game by TJ tonight. I know it is "just summer league" but since that is what we are watching we should judge him on that. Guarded bigs and smalls tonight. How many deflections, steals , blocks and forced plays did he create? As far as offense he should have put up 41. Easy.

I like watching Booker shoot. It reminds me of Ray Allen where even missed shots look good. He looks dedicated, and even defensively he gives effort. I think he is for sure getting some minutes here and there during the season.

Do you guys think Summer League has tougher competition than D-League?

Warren is ridiculous.

He doesn't attempt 3pt shoots because that's not his strength. Playing to your strengths is a trait of smart players, and Warren is sure one of them. He is one of those players who will rarely (if ever) shoot threes one season, and then absolutely explode on that end next season. Attempting 3-4 of these shots per game right now is surely not going to improve him on that end. 1000s of threes taken in practice is what will ultimately make him a better 3pt shooter.

Right, and he needs to have already been doing that since getting into the league. Tonight he played great, but for the team to be better at the NBA level (not Summer League, where Marcus Banks and Jerryd Bayless are hall of famers), he has to be able to provide some spacing at the 3. Multiple times tonight TJ got the ball wide open with nobody within 10 feet of him at the 3 point line, and he instead passed on those to dribble in and take stop and pop mid range jumpers. Even if he hits those--that's a mathematically bad decision if he can hit 33%. Maybe he can't and therefore is playing it "smart", but with his stroke he should have put in enough time shooting the 3 to hit that very minimal benchmark. Furthermore, if he keeps doing that it is also going to kill one of our team strengths--the ability for our guards to drive to the hoop, because teams will guard us by crowding in. It will turn TJ into having a Corey Maggette ceiling instead of a truly elite offensive dynamo.

Not necessarily. It depends on his success rate at shooting those mid-range shots. Shooting the 3 at a 33% success rate, Warren would be better off dribbling in for a shorter two point shot if he converted at a 50% or greater rate.

yeah. There's certainly more top end talent in the summer league than the dleague. One area the dleague has an advantage is continuity since those guys have a ton more time to play together where as dleague teams are just kind of thrown together and it creates a disjointed look to some teams.

I think it depends.

Warren got most of his buckets against Portis tonight, so his matchup was easily harder than what he would face in the d-league.

Yes, because premiere draft studs that will never set foot in the D league and even guys that play overseas who will never set foot in the D league play in it. There is actually a D league select team that competes in summer league...like an all star D league team, so that should say something.

Welcome. Nice first post. Yes, Warren needs to get 3 pt range for team spacing purposes, but in a given play, if he is going to be the scorer, he is better off shooting midrange at this point if he is shooting 55% because he'd need to convert at 37% from 3 to settle for a 3 with equal production.

I hope Len plays today. I know they said they would sit him on b2b games and I know winning the summer league isn't important, but it would be kind of fun to see them get to the championship, and it would suck if we didn't make it because we sat him. But of course it would suck more if he got injured. So hopefully he plays, we win, and there is no injury.

It would have been great if you had an answer for your own question, but I do know he had one block and one steal. I haven't watched the game yet (date night with wife), but was Warren guarding Portis? Didn't Portis go 25/15? :o

As for the DLeague vs Summer League, it's tough to gauge, for many in the Summer League will also play in the DLeague, minus a few who will be needed for rotation on their teams. The reason they use the Allstar team is the other good DL guys are under contract with teams, and most likely will play for their Summer teams.

Oh well, glad we won, and can't wait to watch the game.

Portis scored 2 pts on Warren off of freethrows. He only guarded him about 10 mins. He was only credited with 1 steal and 1 block but had several more. My guy says he had 3 steals and 2 blocks. That is what I tabulated. His man scored 2 threes on him(1 being in transition). That's it. HIs man also didn't get offensive rebounds against him. Watch the game and let's discuss after. FYI. TJ has made tens of thousands of us North Carolinians Suns fans. That is great for any program. Go Suns!! Go Pack!!

As far as competition level between the 2 leagues vs the NBA. Both leagues have a lot of talent. A lot of players that play in these games could very well be in the league. There aren't many spaces in the NBA and luck has a minor role in making to the next level. 1 off night can make or break a teams decision.

I love Portis hustle and intensity. I hope he gets an opportunity in Chicago. I think that was a really good pick for them, he is a keeper. His shot is broken, but it looks true (if that makes sense) kind of like Reggie Miller's and World B Free broken shots. I didn't want him based on that, but seeing it in the flow of the game it doesn't look as bad.

Still like Booker the best though. My new favorite Sun!!!
