The Trade Thread: All Eyes Toward The Offseason

This is going to sound negative but I actually think it might be the best course of action, and given McDonough's obsession with "assets," seems likely to me too:

I think we're headed for a very uneventful off-season. It doesn't make sense to trade Bledsoe or Knight, as both of them are relatively low in value now compared to where they will likely be later, as Bledsoe's health and Knight's play hopefully both improve and the salary cap rises. Chandler's in the same boat of being overpaid now but having potential to be a trade chip later as the cap rises and our training staff tries to take good care of him. There is a chance of trading Tucker, hopefully along the lines of the Dudley-for-Bledsoe steal, but also a chance that the FO prefers to keep him to retain a fan-favorite and maintain the illusion that we're trying to compete. Meanwhile, we're likely to be outbid in any potential "disgruntled superstar" trade, and likely to get a #5ish pick that won't immediately move the needle either. So we'll trot out a very similar team next year, and with health and development we should improve to the vicinity of the playoff bubble while also developing our youth, which will give us fans some hope and also give the Bledsoe/Knight/Chandler deals another year to become more valuable vs the rising cap.

And as long as at least one of our draft picks is an intriguing power forward, I'm strangely okay with all this.

Well he pretty much avoided the question. "I see my role being the same" was his answer several times to the same question. I honestly don't care if he starts as long as Booker gets close to 40 minutes. Bledsoe and Knight should see around 30 each.

Funny how he talked about "holding ourselves to a high standard," when he's been trash for the entire career.

No. I am. Booker covers all of Eric's deficiencies, namely outside shooting & late game decision making. We will just run the pick & roll through Booker late in the 4th. I'm kind of excited. We have to move Knight. He is already saying he will be unhappy off the bench and I see no reason to return Booker to a reserve role. Devin has earned a starting spot.

I'm not a Knight fan but he has more value than Ish the Swish Smith

See, I just don't think he adds something to the team, particularly going forward, especially if he starts. Every shot he takes away, every time he turns the ball over, his subpar defense will have positive on court value I suspect. Add the salary on top of that. I think Ish makes others better, while Knight doesn't with his off the mark lobs, and launching twos with open teammates around him.

Now if he can embrace a sixth man type role and play within limitations, maybe.

I used to like Knight. Wanted to give him a chance but there's no way in hell (Vince McMahons music going on in my head) that he's starting over Devin Booker.

The amount of money spent this coming offseason will be unprecedented. Nearly every team in the league will have somewhere around 20-30 million in cap space. Some teams will have 40 million or more. A team like Philadelphia could end up having 60 million dollars in cap space. A player like Teletovich might get 15 million a year. Mid-tier players might end up getting max contracts. The Suns should have no problem moving any player they want because none of them will be considered highly paid anymore. Chandler at 12-13 million a year is going to look like a bargain.

Some are predicting the Lakers will have $65 million. Jerry Colangelo will have all those picks and $60 million to spend. They are going to run out of players before they run out of money.

Booker is darn near untouchable to me.
I also think I want the top four pick - as long as it stays top 4. If by some reason it becomes 6 or 7, it can be traded
Everything else, open for damn business


As for Knight - if he doesn't want to be the third guard, trade him . But Booker should be starting. He has STAR potential Bledsoe and Knight just do not have.

If the Suns strike out on the big names, rather then overspend on mediocre players I wonder if they would consider signing a few mediocre players to HUGE 2 year deals (1 year guaranteed followed by a team option)

1. The Suns then have trade chips - expirings.

2. The Suns then preserve cap space for next year.

3. Unless of course that player "goes off" then we can exercise the team option and keep their bird rights.
