In today's NBA, Tatum looks to be a slightly improved version of Marcus Morris, not quite Danny Granger. Although if you have the mix of players that would allow you to run him at the 4, he might be more effective. I just don't think he has quite enough quickness to excel at small forward in the NBA.
I'm curious about what you thought of Brandon Ingram. I think Tatum is a better player than Ingram, but Ingram has yet to translate to the NBA, so that might not be such a high bar. Also, what's your stance on Josh Jackson and Jonathan Isaac.
I never understood why Ingram was being touted so much, it's almost like he was getting props for being incredibly skinny. As if every long, tall and skinny player was all or a sudden going to blossom into something special. He still might get there but I don't think he would have gone top 5 in most drafts. I like Tatum more than Ingram but I think they both received inflated draft attention because of the exposure Duke players get. But like I said before, I could see Tatum moving to the 4 and having a bigger impact than at his projected position, assuming he can handle the extra contact when he defends down low.
I really like Jackson although if he doesn't fix that stroke he's never going to be more than a great complementary player. But I felt similarly about Kawhi and look what he's become. But even if he doesn't fix his shot, a great complementary player is still quite valuable. I look at Isaac much like I did Chriss last season although Jonathan has better instincts at the same stage. Like Chriss, I think he will be boom or bust and it will take most of his rookie contract to figure out which way it's going to go.
