It's definitely close when you consider Tatum is over a full year younger than JJ. If Jayson Tatum came back for his sophomore year (which would be JJ's current age) he'd probably be the most dominant player in college bball. His foot speed and explosiveness leaves a little bit to be desired but that could partly be due to his early season injuries.

That's okay, I'm not exactly sold on Tatum either. Looks like I'm going to actually have to violate my Duke rule and watch another one of their games to see why so many are high on him.

Tatum with 15/9/4/2/2 on 5/13 shooting
Isaac with 8/8/1 on 3/7 shooting

I'll watch the replay to see beyond the stats tomorrow.

I haven't seen the game, obviously, but are the minutes low for isaac because of his asthma? If so he may be on a minutes restriction for his career?

I have high hopes for Ayton, porter, and bamba next year. Not sure if Tatum would have a better year than Porter with a green light at Washington.
I like tatum alot and think he'd look good on the wing for us

I'm still unconvinced on Tatum, although that's just based on the small sample of tonight's game and a couple of early season games when he first returned from injury. In today's NBA, Tatum looks to be a slightly improved version of Marcus Morris, not quite Danny Granger. Although if you have the mix of players that would allow you to run him at the 4, he might be more effective. I just don't think he has quite enough quickness to excel at small forward in the NBA.

I'm curious about what you thought of Brandon Ingram. I think Tatum is a better player than Ingram, but Ingram has yet to translate to the NBA, so that might not be such a high bar. Also, what's your stance on Josh Jackson and Jonathan Isaac.

I have no idea how to fit Tatum on this team. On PF? What to do with Chriss and Bender then? On SF? Then Suns would have 2 very similar players on the same position and Warren seems to play much better as starter than coming from the bench.

I never understood why Ingram was being touted so much, it's almost like he was getting props for being incredibly skinny. As if every long, tall and skinny player was all or a sudden going to blossom into something special. He still might get there but I don't think he would have gone top 5 in most drafts. I like Tatum more than Ingram but I think they both received inflated draft attention because of the exposure Duke players get. But like I said before, I could see Tatum moving to the 4 and having a bigger impact than at his projected position, assuming he can handle the extra contact when he defends down low.

I really like Jackson although if he doesn't fix that stroke he's never going to be more than a great complementary player. But I felt similarly about Kawhi and look what he's become. But even if he doesn't fix his shot, a great complementary player is still quite valuable. I look at Isaac much like I did Chriss last season although Jonathan has better instincts at the same stage. Like Chriss, I think he will be boom or bust and it will take most of his rookie contract to figure out which way it's going to go.

I'd say Tatum and Isaac are NBA PFs once they get the strength, Jackson primarily an NBA SF or small ball PF.

Bender and Chriss are likely gonna be better as C going forward anyway.

I hope Josh Jackson isn't the next MKG. His shot would certainly be prettier though.

I get the mkg comp and it is a little concerning. Now i do wonder if we would view mkg differently had he been able to stay healthy. The free throw shooting is certainly a huge red flag because not only does it tend not to significantly improve but wings who struggle with it can develop a bad habit of not being aggressive on o because they dont want to get fouled. On a plus side oh my could the suns use a bad ass lock down defender wing as part of their core group.

Tatum is really growing on me, it's just hard to think of anyone who plays like him that flopped at NBA level.

You can think of dozens of upside athletes, but not someone with the skillset and length like Tatum.

On Jackson though, his steal rate of 3.1 per 100 posessions would rank him 5th in the entire NBA (1000 minutes min.)

Green, Sefolosha, Allen, Covington, Paul (equal or ahead) are all NBA defensive team worthy players, so the correlation is huge for his prospects as it creates a high floor even if other aspects remain questions.

The defensive advanced numbers for Tatum, Jackson, and Isaac:
DRtg/DBpm/DWS/StlP100/BlkP100
Tatum:
94.9/4.8/1.5/2.3/2.3
Jackson:
95.8/5.6/1.9/3.1/2.0
Isaac:
92.9/6.1/1.6/2.6/3.2

The offensive advance numbers for Tatum, Jackson, and Isaac:
Usg%/TS%/ORtg/OBpm/OWS/PtsP100/AstP100/TurnoversP100
Tatum:
26.2%/55.9%/110.3/3.2/1.6/28.5/3.9/4.8
Jackson:
27.6%/55.0%/109.7/4.9/2.2/29.9/5.5/5.1
Isaac:
21.1%/63.9%/126.2/5.9/2.3/27.3/2.2/3.2

Some thing to consider: Isaac has played 27 games for 685 minutes (25.4 MPG), Tatum has played 22 games for 714 minutes (32.5 MPG), Jackson has played 30 games for 919 minutes (30.6 MPG).
