Re: Around the NBA - 2020-21
Pretty entertaining read about the 'ringless hopefuls' this year
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/ringless-nba-teams-should-love-their-chances-this-season/?addata=espn:nba:teams
At the All-Star break, the top five teams in the league according to our classic Elo ratings included four first-time title contenders — the Jazz, Phoenix Suns, Nuggets and Clippers. (The Lakers were the fifth team.) The last time the NBA saw so many first-time title hopefuls in Elo’s top five at midseason came in another strange, shortened season — the 1998-99 lockout year, when the Jazz, Spurs, Heat and Pacers joined the then-11-time champ Lakers3 atop the rankings. (The Spurs ultimately prevailed, earning the first of their five total titles.)
Before that, the last time at least four of the top five midseason Elo teams had never won a title was back in 1951, when the league was made up of just 11 teams (and had only ever awarded four championships in its history — including titles from the Basketball Association of America, the precursor to the NBA).

I wouldn't be either if I was him. Probably the worst contract in the league based on what he has provided since he got it.

Yeah, I read that yesterday. Pretty amazing that the last time there were 4 teams, the Spurs were ringless, and the time before that was 70 years ago.

It should continue to dwindle at this point with almost 2/3rds of the league having won a ring (barring expansion).
The NBA is the only sport where I look and say, 'it's very possible I could live another 50 years and never see my team win it all'.
The sport is so reliant on stars, and when players do what the Warriors, lakers, Heat, and now Nets have done, it's hard to see the ringless teams sneaking in there.
Seasons like this one give me hope though. Even if not this year, chips can fall at the right time and you suddenly become a contender.

He's not wrong but also not Love's fault Dan Gilbert backed up the Brink's truck when no one in their right mind would've offered Love such a massive extension. What's a guy to do with that much money on the table, rip up the cheque lol?
To this day, I still don't understand why they thought it would be a good idea to try and "stay the course" and resign Love to keep in the playoff race. I know it's the East but that's a helluva long term commitment just to try and chase the playoffs with Cedi Osman, Love, Thompson, Clarkson, Burk, Nance and a rookie Sexton.

I dunno jack about any other of the big sports in the US but technically you could've lived a lifetime without having watched the Cubs win it all.

I'm a Brewers fan and they have never won one. With the payroll disparity in the MLB they probably never will.lilfishi22 wrote:King4Day wrote:bwgood77 wrote:

Our choke to the Nets is now only the 2nd worst choke of the season. Thanks Pelicans!

Bad night for us. Celtics blow it against Jazz. Lakers roll. Portland wins somehow.

Not to say it was expected but the recipe for an upset was there with the young and undisciplined Pels team and Dame time in crunch time

I felt second hand embarrassment watching it. SVG made some absolutely disastrous moves like going small after they had success with a bigger lineup.
And besides Lillard, the main catalyst for the Pels choke was Eric Bledsoe. God he’s so washed. I always knew his game wouldn’t age well because of how much he relied on his athleticism and strength but damn this was horrific.

Wow, the Blazers won? I checked this earlier and I thought it was like a 30+ pt game. Looking at the play by play, this looks like the Bulls game where the Blazers were down by 5 with 7 seconds left. Looks like in this they were down 4 with 5 seconds left and what, the Pels maybe intentionally fouled to just give them 2, and then up by 1 after the free throws, screwed up the in bounds play and turned it over?
Reminds me of our year with Brandon Knight..seems like we blew games like this a few times.
I swear Portland has won about 5 games like this..by like 1 pt on crazy comebacks, but this one and the Bulls one were the kind of ones you usually see a team have once every few years...not like twice in 10 games.
I see they got McCollum back. It's amazing they have hung in there all this time without him, their starting SG, their starting C and their starting PF.

Yeah I think I read last night Portland is 8-4 in games decided by 3 points or less

I haven't followed them enough but I wonder if this is a coaching issue or the fact that Griffin traded the getter guard for the worse guard.
I wonder if Van Gundy is gone after this season.
