SA is a very lucky team

Post#1 » by SideSwipe » Thu Jul 1, 2010 2:09 am

In a long line of recent history SA has repeatedly gotten lucky in the playoffs, lucky in the draft, and now to top it off, Richard Jefferson just opted out of his $15.2 million contract, which puts SA $3 million under the cap. Unbelievable that Jefferson would walk away from $15.2 million, when I think his max on the open market is likey going to be $10 million I think. He is one guy that might consider going back to Jersey as a consolation prize or to NY. If Jeffferson and Gay each agreed they were part of the "1/2 max" club, they will have a lot of suitors. Instead of teams looking for 3 maxes, they could go for 2 maxes and a half-max, or 2 maxes, and 2 half-maxes

At a cheaper price I would be very interested in what Richard Jefferson could bring to the team, and not just because he went to the U of A, or is the best player I've ever personally played against, but because I think his set of skills was a terrible match for SA, but a perfect one for PHX. Decent defender, great slasher, and decent with a 3 point shot, and great finishing on the break.

The Spurs get no additional benefit from losing his salary as the MLE is worth more than $3 mil anyway.

They should trade Parker for a S&T Rudy Gay. Spurs need an athletic SF who can create his own shot.

They get below the CAP (it looks like they have about $52 mil in committed salaries) and don't need to pay Jefferson $15 million for 12 points per game production. This definitely qualifies as very lucky.

Still if Jefferson could be had for $7-$9 million I think he becomes a more interesting person to have on the team. At the MLE he would be downright intriguing.

I like it. The Spurs don't get lucky at all. Because now, they can't trade his expiring 15.2 mil to a struggling team before the deadline in February. Like some mentioned earlier, they are only 3 mil below the cap, and the MLE is way above that.

RJ would probably be decent in a Suns uniform except that we are stacked at SF already and I don't want to move Earl Clark to PF.

Plus RJ is definitely looking for a long term contract if he opts out of a 1 year that is roughly 3 times his worth...and I don't wanna lock RJ up.

I know the Suns fans' constant disapproval of the Spurs is fueled by our playoffs history. While they might be lucky in some games, they're certainly not "lucky" when it comes to drafts. It's just they know how to fit the right pieces together. Anyone could have picked Ginobili but he ended up with the Spurs. You have to admit they do have an eye for the right talent.

For RJ, I really don't care. And him leaving 15 million dollars on the table is completely understandable as players would like a better financial settlement with the new CBA coming up. He might lose even more money had he decided to opt in.

  Your kidding me about not lucky when it comes to drafts. What a joke. They have landed two #1 picks in getting two of the best big men ever. That is lucky. Suns have never got a #1 pick.

RJ sucks. Really, he does and he is stupid he just opted out of that much money. He is not going to get anything close to that. I would not want him here. Nash will make him look good like Jkidd did, but nash is gone in 2 years.

Suns never getting a #1 pick doesn't classify the Spurs as being lucky. It only makes us unlucky.
Loads of teams have gotten numerous #1 picks.

And even with the #1 pick a team will need to know how to build the team around that certain player to succeed.
Just so you know, Orlando Magic technically had two consecutive 1st overall picks and could have paired Shaq with C-Webb.
They might have made them the best big the world has ever seen. Who knows?

A large part of Tim Duncan's success came from his team's success. Had his team failed, he won't be labelled the best big man to ever exist in NBA.

Didn't we all think LBJ would win all this year? They failed because the Cavs don't know how to build a team like SAS did.

How does this make them lucky? They don't have capspace. They just lost the biggest expiring contract other than Jason Richardson and Tyson Chandler.

I'd trade Parker to MEM for Gay (S&T), to complete the coup.

yup. its tied with about a million, bazillion other tattoos, though. (not coming from a tattoo hater either... i have a full sleeve on my right arm/partial sleeve on my left arm). But yeah... basketball players for the most part need to not get tattoos because they are rarely even well done, let alone something anybody should actually want on their body their entire life.
