Let's play the role of Gentry!

Alright fellas..just for fun, lets pretend that its the first day of the regular NBA season. Give me your starting five and why...
C-Lopez
Pf- Frye
Sf- Hedo
sg- J-Rich
pg- Nash
The reason why I benched Grant Hill and went with Frye is that it it gives us another 6'11 body down low to get rebounds. Frye also does a tremendous job of spreading the floor on offense. However, everyone will agree that he needs to work on his game in the paint; post moves and shots within 10 feet away from the rim. Hedo Turkeyglue is with out a doubt better offensively than Hill (my opinion). With a 6'10'' frame Hedo will give us many mismatches on the court.
Your Turn...

You know youre addicted to basketball when:
You create a thread in the summer that puts grant hill on the bench to kill time until actual news rolls along.

...and how you think Frye knows what the paint looks like, and how he knows how to grab rebounds...

Same as last season but replace Amare with Hedo in the starting lineup.
Anybody making Hill come off the bench hasn't watched Hill come off the bench.

I think Hedo playing PF is a nightmare but hey it worked for Tim Thomas.

I think more thought needs to go into our 2nd unit then our starters so with that in mind:
1st unit: Lopez/Warrick/Hill/JRich/Nash
2nd unit: Frye/Hedo/Dudley/Childress/Dragic
Just realised that it's prolly not a great idea to have Hill and Childress on the floor at the same time because neither sink enough 3s so we won't stretch the floor enough. Hedo helps Dragic with the ball-handling in the 2nd unit. Nash goes PnR with either Lopez or Warrick depending on who we play.
More importantly I see us finishing games with Lopez/Hedo/Hill/JRich/Nash.

This would be a more ideal lineup with the current players we have, but...

lilfishi is exactly right. Hill was awful coming off the bench. So even in the starting lineup, he'll probably be the first sub early, depending on how he is going. Also, throwing Hedo at SF means we mess up Dudley and even Clark's minutes.
So that gives
C - Lopez
PF - Hedo
SF - Hill
SG - JRich
PG - Nash
and we can go a 2nd unit of Dragic/Childress/Dudley/Warrick/Frye, which actually seems really front court thin when I see it like that

This is the best starting five. I don't know why we OWE it to Grant to start him, because he is unable to come off of the bench, he'd better learn. To the detriment of the team we start him and Hedo??
Frye isn't a banger and he will never be one on offense, but he can bang effectively enough on defense where he won't be a total liability like Hedo. On offense Frye is our PERFECT 4, PERFECT!
This lineup has 4, I'll say it again, FOUR shooters and two PNR roll guys with Nash (Lopez and Turk). As far as the bench goes, we don't have to do that all five sub thing. Dragic, Hill, Dudley, Warrick, and Childress all deserve time, but I'll let Gentry figure that out, that to me is far more difficult.
We need a back up five. If we don't get one we are starting a small team of
Nash
JRich
Hill
Turk
Lopez
and a small bench of
Dragic
Chill
Duds
Warrick
Frye......................all light weights, even though some are tall (Frye, Chill and Warrick are going to get punk'd)

How is it a detriment to the team if Hill is a productive starter? If he was Elton Brand or something and we have to start him because he's getting paid like a starter then you have a point. But Hill is playing for cheap, is still productive as a starter and he plays well next to Nash, I don't see an argument for benching Hill, where he's terrible as a reserve.
Frye is best coming off the bench as a gunner who spreads the floor. He's great playing the Eddie House role and that's where he should stay. I don't see any reason to start him when he plays just as well off the bench. Unless Frye develops a decent midrange or post game by the start of the season, Hedo's effectiveness on offense, far outweighs Frye's effectiveness on defense.
I think Hedo will do fine as a PF in our system. We'll sorely miss Amare's inside game but now we have someone besides Nash who can create their own shot, which I think will add another dimension to our system.

1st unit: Nash, Richardson, Hill, Hedo, Lopez
2nd unit: Dragic, Childress, Dudley, Warrick, Frye
Frye and Hedo switch off starting PF a few times throughout to the season, regardless we wont have any rebounding in the 2nd unit, so we have to rely on smart passing from Dragic that lead to smart shots. Childress and Warrick being smart slashers help. It's really gonna be weird seeing the 5 players in the 2nd unit play together though because all of them start their offense beyond the 3 point line, except Warrick who starts at the top of the key.

I think i agree with above. Gentry will have to be creative with the rotations depending on who we play. I hope Lopez comes ready and improved because we need him to be that center that we drafted him to become. Goran needs to have the ball on his hands increasingly this upcoming season! Hedo is best used as a started because this may contradict with Goran's development.

I guess I'm the only one that thinks we are going to either start or play long minutes of Nash/Richardson/Hedo/Warrick/Lopez.
Hill is awful off the bench but he will either learn how or be subbed for very early in the first.

Though I pine to see our all-shooter lineup (Nash, Richardson, Hill, Turkoglu, Frye )in just to see how teams react, I think we are likley to see:
Nash
Richardson
Hill
Hedo
Lopez

I think Nash will initiate with a pick at the top of the key with Lopez as the roll target with Turkoglu at the high elbow as the release valve, with a secondary finisher slashing in from the 3pt. line I think our use of Lopez in the PNR will dramatically increase.
Our time using Frye at the 4 will increase split with Turkoglu. Hill's minutes will decrease and be picked up by Turk, where Dudley will get the same minutes. Richardson will continue to get solid minutes and share them with Chill. Dragic continues on at 20 minutes. 18 at PG and 2 at SG, with Nash playing 30 minutes or so.

Hill will play reduced minutes even though he'll start. It has nothing to do with Gentry having to start Hill because he owes it to the vet, it's just smart basketball to start a vet who produces better when he starts. But he's still old so he'll definitely play reduced minutes but I don't think he'll complain as long as he starts.
