With all of the trade talk swirling around Carmelo Anthony recently, I thought I would ask the fan base that recently said goodbye to its own superstar forward.

It seems to me that, based on what I have been reading, Denver is asking for quite a bit in return for that oh-so-familiar phrase, a "one-year rental". We saw the same thing before Amare's final season with us and, when he left, were left with a still very gracious TPE when it could have very easliy been nothing.

So, with idiots reporting things like this:

Amick also reports that the Knicks would have to deal almost all of their young talent -- including Anthony Randolph, Danilo Gallinari, Toney Douglas and Wilson Chandler -- in order to make a trade for Anthony now. In one proposed trade, Chandler would have gone to Houston in a multi-team deal involving the Rockets.

It kind of makes you wonder: What is Anthony's current trade value? What would it be with a signed extension?

Yeah in a situation like ours or Denver's, you're pretty much showing your hand when you start shopping an expiring star. No better way to get owned at the negotiating table than for everyone to know your player won't sign with you so in the end, you'll take anything to beat getting nothing.

And the re-signing thing is an issue too. When you look at something like when it was originally rumored that NJ would send Favors and more for Melo, NJ would have to be insane to send away Favors with anything below a 99.9% chance of Melo signing with them. You'd think in these situations the player could agree to an extension with the current team, with the understanding that it would be part of a trade.

But the player will get his money regardless of resigning with his current team. He'll get overpaid as a FA next summer, just like players got overpaid this summer... even with a lockout looming.

The way you get the player an extra cut though is re-signing with that extra year and/or higher raises.

Player - bigger/longer contract
Current team - more in return for player
New team - eliminate concern of not re-signing

Well... that is true. But, if he were to sign an extension with Denver it would almost definitely have some form of clause in it making sure he had veto power on any trades to teams he didn't want to play for. So the situation doesn't really change all that much. From every account out there, he wants to end up in NY. He's better off waiting out his contract and signing fresh with the Knicks. This way, none of the young talent the Knicks have will need to be sent off. So he either signs and agrees to a trade with the Knicks, wherein they lose any talent in the near future for him, or he signs next summer and they retain their young talent and add him to it. I'm assuming he doesn't want to end up playing in a situation where it's Amar'e and himself with literally no one else for the next few seasons.

I think they right to ask for more right now. If you recall, we almost had a deal done with Amare going to GS for Curry, Wright and I think Beans last off-season. As the season goes by the value of these "superstars" seriously diminish since they are less than one-year rentals. By mid-Feb Amare's going rate was Hickson and friggin' big Z or to Miami for Haslem and a pick (iirc).

Also as for getting paid more, Denver still has the option to do a S&T and Denver will get the TPE like we did, but at that point they also have next to no leverage since teams won't need to give up any assets for Melo since he could just walk and sign with whatever team. I mean, all we got in return for Amare was a conditional 2nd and a TPE. Even if NJ doesn't send Favors in the end, whatever package NJ or NY has to offer, is still better than TPE + a conditional 2nd.

I don't think it's a big deal for Melo. He doesn't have to do any of the cleaning up if he leaves and he gets paid either way. Denver is really playing a game where the most they can win is the least they can lose. Melo still has some veto'ing power so Denver has to play against that too. So I don't think the question is really what Melo is worth, by rather what Denver can salvage since Melo is a top 10 player and a top 10 player should be worth at least a top 20 player in return, but the situation they are in changes everything.
