Day 1 notes from Coro:

The good camp stuff

Phoenix Suns update:

The Suns, with their eight new players in camp and new staff watching, have been trying to get to know each other leading up to training camp but nothing does that better than what they had Tuesday night at UC-San Diego.

It was the Suns' first true practice scrimmaging. With contact barred at the morning sessions, the Suns suited up for more than two hours of work Tuesday night with a lot of full-court scrimmaging including officials and a 20-second shot clock.

"It's about what we thought it'd be today," Suns coach Alvin Gentry said after the first of three two-a-days was done. "It's going to be kind of wild and crazy and scrambling and stuff like that. Really, all we wanted to do is see them run up and down the court. We've got to establish the mentality that every possession we're going to be in the attack mode. We're not going to be real sharp right now with what we're doing but we've got to keep working and pushing the tempo."

Gentry said it looked, as expected, like a new concept to the new players. He used the example that rookie Matt Janning has never been yelled at to shoot when open, much like what Channing Frye went through last season.

In the portion of practice open to the media, Gentry jumped on his team during one sloppy stretch with this message: "The one thing you've got to do is if you get mentally tired, push yourself through. We've been here one day."

Some other orange slices from scrimmage time:

* The 17 Suns campers were split into three teams. It has been long-assumed that Hedo Turkoglu would be the Suns' starting power forward but confirmation came when he was in black with fellow starters Steve Nash, Jason Richardson, Grant Hill and robin Lopez. The second-string white team was Goran Dragic, Josh Childress, Jared Dudley, Hakim Warrick, Channing Frye and Dwayne Jones. The purple team was Chucky Atkins, Matt Janning, Zabian Dowdell, Earl Clark, Gani Lawal and Garret Siler.

* When they went into full-fledged scrimmaging, the second stringers beat the starters and the third string with Lopez joining the second string some for the latter brief game. Dudley and Childress showed some instant chemistry, doing all of the scoring until Dragic finished with a 3-pointer and a swerving reverse drive. The white team's highlight play was Childress cutting along the baseline for a layup off a no-look pass from Dudley.

"Josh Childress adds a little bit to that unit to the standpoint of being a slasher, being able to get out and run and being able to finish on the break and being able to rebound," Gentry said.

* Lawal, the Suns' second-round pick, continued to impress, particularly with a sequence in which he beat Warrick with an up-and-under post move to draw a foul and then stole a Frye pass on the other end.

"I felt good about myself," Lawal said. "I made some mistakes. I learned some things. It's all part of the process."

Lawal admitted to getting tired, saying his anxiety for his first NBA practice day was contributing to that.

"Gani was a guy who dunked everything (in college) and now he has no legs at all," Gentry said. "He'll improve. He just hasn't been used to all the running, bumping and grinding."

* Turkoglu played with his new team for the first time Tuesday with no restrictions. He had been asked not to participate in last week's voluntary pickup games as a precaution following the knee sprain he suffered in the World Championship final this month.

Gentry on Turkoglu's acclimation: "Right now, he's not having the ball in his hands very much. But there's going to be situations where we rebound it and outlet it to him and he's the guy who pushes it... They played somewhat like this in Orlando anyway, except they had a big guy in the middle. He can create plays and he's a long-range 3-point shooter so it'll work out."

* The team went about 20 minutes beyond its scheduled practice time, making for about five hours of practice on Tuesday. They will have another two-practice day today and Thursday.

Our bench team is going to destroy some people. If you really think about it, we replaced no defense chucker LB with good defense, high iq, picks his shots Childress and Lou with Warrick. Warrick and Lou are polar opposites which I feel will make it balance out... Our second team beat our first in scrimmage's today too. Just offensively, Dragic will be creating, driving and shooting, Dudley and Frye will be bombing, and Warrick and Childress will be making cuts. Should be alot of fun to watch em. That group will lock down the perimeter pretty darn well too. Interior D will be an issue, as will rebounding, but we have Dragic, Childress, and Dudley who will all rebound better than the average player at their respective positions.

I feel we're a top 4 team in the west with the Lakers Thunder and Jazz.

Think about it

Our bench got better. We're 10 deep still we have a good coach still got Steve Nash and although we lost Amare we gained 3 quality pieces 2 of which are upgrades over the existing.

Dragic Childress Dudley Warrick Frye is the best bench in the NBA and will do work on other teams benches throughout the year. Our starting five may not be world beaters and we'll struggle in the post and getting rebounds but our perimeter D got better too by swapping out Childress for Barbosa.

That gives us 4 legit perimeter defenders in Dragic Childress Hill and Dudley.

We added another ball handler distributor and shooter in Turkoglu which in a trade was a steal for BARbosa basketball wise if he pans out.

And at the deadline, if we're smart and careful, we can deal 1 or 2 of our excess wings for a good power forward and see what happens maybe.

I like the makeup of this team it' gonna be REAl FUN TO WATCH.

i agree we are a top 4 team. i was just watching hedo in the training camp vids and he was taking advantage of mismatches. he had a sweet pass to hill as well.

anyway, idk that the jazz will make the top 4. i think they have regressed from last year. id say portland will be up there, healthy oden, brandon roy and aldridge are only getting better.

as for the bottom 4 seeds. i think the clippers may make the playoffs as well as the spurs mavs jazz. denver will be on the cusp.

also expect a d solid season from golden state. there starting lineup is beast. sactown is a wildcard with tyreke. houston is gone and as for the rest idk

Just watched that. Lawal looks freakin' awesome. Childress gets to where he wants to be at will.

This team is long, long, LONG. I love it. Shots seem on target too. Gotta get rid of the fat guy though, I don't think this guy can make it.

damn gani jumps high, childress looks like a great fit, that hedo nash hill fastbreak was interesting too. And earl clark really needs to get his mental game right because he can actually bring a lot if he could get his head together because he has the talent.

Earl really impressed me in that video. He looked much better on the court than he did last year. Last year he looked lost and a little bit disorientated on the court. The video showed me otherwise.

I hope Earl can put it together on the court this season and hopefully log some minutes.

Great reviews and wow Lawal is so exciting...but what about Warrick? No mention of him or anything good he did, and theoretically he's supposed to play many more minutes than Gani :-?

Here is an interesting article on training camp, especially what is being said about Clark....

* Once the lineups changed with the start of the second game, the night's most pleasant surprise -- Earl Clark -- began to shine. He rebounded well. He got fouled inside and scored on an and-one transition play early that seemed to get him going.

"I'm feeling more comfortable and learning the plays more," Clark said. "I know I'm going to play straight four (power forward) this year."

Those two things could be major steps for Clark, who had trouble remember plays last season when he was trying to learn small forward and power forward. And as strictly a power forward, his chance at playing time increases.

One of the best things he did Wednesday night was play decisively offensively, making quick passes or moves rather than his past characteristic of letting the back stick in his hands to freeze the offense and let the defense key in.

"I know that gets Coach ticked off so I've got to make sure I don't do it," said Clark, whose play is pleasing his coach so far.

Man, everyone really looks good out there. Childress especially seems to be a great fit. He runs the floor well, is an excellent slasher, and plays solid defense, I see him as being a perfect fit for the second unit. Hedo looks to be a deadly 3 point shooter and I'm finally starting to see how he could be effective playing alongside Nash and the other starters. Gani with those throw downs was pretty sick, I think he's ready to contribute this season and I hope we can find some minutes for him. It's nice to see that Earl is doing better as well, might be ready to make the second year leap...hope he gets some consistent minutes. No Warrick is a bit weird, all the other guys look to be their usual selves...I think we're going to see a lot of little improvements from all the younger guys this year and our bench is gonna be absolutely bananas
