OT: New Year's Resolutions

Hey guys, so I wanted to share my mini success story with you guys. I know a lot of people make resolutions every year to get in shape and I did it in 2010.

I started 2010 weighing 226lbs and was probably 23-24% bodyfat. I was a disgusting blob and miserable with how I looked. I hadn't been laid in well over a year. So I decided to get my ass into gear and do something about it. I quit lifting in the summer of 2005 and really let myself go. I am leaner than I was in 2005, but I'm not quite as strong. That is changing though! Anyway, here's the before and after picture. I'm currently 222lbs and about 12-13% bodyfat if I had to make a rough guess.

I mostly did Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength and a mixture of tabata protocol and more traditional high intensity interval workouts. If you have any specific questions, let me know, I'll be more than happy to answer them!

Good stuff man. I'm gonna get on that plan starting tomorrow. I'm about 210 or so I don't look out of shape but I used to lift my legs alot so I bulked up gained quad/hamstring calf muscle.

I'm gonna get down to 185 10 percent body fat by the end of the 2011 year.

I did just the opposite in 2010, I went from weighing 175ish to about 190isj... I could really lose the beer belly I have obtained, looks like you were quite successful, what kind of diet and exercise routine did you use??? My NYR is to lose the weight I gained in 2010 and build some muscle.

Nothing too crazy. I lost most of the fat early on in the year. I kept carb intake at a minimum after about 4pm and I cut out almost all dairy. I didn't eat fried foods and rarely ate red meat. I cut out half the egg yolks when I made eggs in the morning. Basically I just cleaned up my diet and paid attention to my portions. If I ate almonds, I ate exactly what 1 serving was instead of just mowing down and not being conscience of what I was putting into my body.

I did a mixture of tabata workouts (8 intervals of 20 sec max effort and 10 seconds active rest -- 4 minutes total) or 30 seconds max effort with 90 seconds active rest for 20 minutes.

For weights I followed Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength, except I didn't squat every single workout. That's just suicide.

suicide for your knees.

Diet is the most important part of losing weight especially losing fat.

You can't work out all the time but you can control what you eat all the time.

Eliminate food intake after 7 or 8 pm, cut out fried foods, dairy, sugary foods, simple carbs(white bread, cane sugar etc)

Eat smaller portions 5 6 times a day to increase metabolism.

I feel losing weight is really simple, it's just committing to it that's difficult

What is your diet like? I'm curious as to both it's composition, how frequently you eat, and how many grams of what, if you know this stuff? I want to drop about 40 pounds.

Sunsfever68 gave some good diet advice. I basically did what he just said. I ate some breads, mainly pita when i made hummus and some bread when i'd make turkey sandwiches. I ate a lot of soups too, usually made with low-fat turkey sausage. I never paid attention to composition, I just ate food that I thought was healthy(ier). And again, portion control is key. Paying attention to what you're putting in your body.

When I've been bulking I really don't pay attention either, I just eat more and I go through A LOT of protein. A 5lb jug every 2 weeks usually.

I always try to eat every 3 hours or so.

Nice work bro, I particularly don't need any help weight wise, but here's my resolution for the New year to come.

The Suns, (especially Vince) stay healthy throughout the rest of the season and we make a big run towards the playoffs. :)

However I don't agree with sunsfever68 that squats are suicide for your knees. A squat performed properly to full parallel is not bad for the knees. I simply meant that doing heavy squats 3-4 times a week would destroy me physically. I'd be so tired all the time.

I was doing great, playing ball three times a week, doing lots of additional cardio and three heavy weight routines (alternate days) as well ... I was in the best shape of my adult life. Then I trashed my knee and quit smoking - result: gained it all back and more

So if anyone wants to start an OT: New Year's Resolution Weight Challenge thread, I'm in. Might help to have company

also diagnosed diabetic 2, with blood sugar just over the marker so it should be reversible with diet and exercise. The good news is I'm still not smoking .... so at 18 mos I think I have that licked.
