Did the Suns offer Amare a contract in the summer or was he set on leaving no matter what?

They offered him a contract. Last two years were not guaranteed though.

Yeah. 3 season max level extension. Last 2 seasons not guaranteed. I don't think he was totally set to leave, but he (and Sarver) certainly paved his way for his exit.

the 2 non guaranteed years were pretty much a slap in the face for Amare.

The contract was guaranteed up to $70 million with the additional $30 million based only on a modest number of games played in the final two years. I think he would only have had to have played half of the final 164.

I don't think our offer was uncalled for. I hate that we could really use him right now, but I agree with the move from a long term perspective.

I don't think that offer is bad at all of those are the numbers involved. I would have just guaranteed it at that point though. Two years of POTENTIAL problems with the cap is a small price to pay for 5 years of Amare and the most dominant offensive big man in the game.

I still think we made the right move by having those years insured. Our training staff made that reccomendation, they had to think there's a possibility he's going to be a Penny Hardaway, Allan Houston, Gilbert Arenas washed up over-payed type player during those years.

Plus, we could have traded him as an expiring, so it would have only been 1, 1.5 years of of trouble if it ever even came to that.....

I still haven't seen actual proof of this.

A solid 70% of us believed that it was very understandable to let Amar'e walk. We're just mad we never attempted to find a legitimate replacement for him. Imagine us spending the money on Warrick and Childress on a legit PF.

Sarver dug his (and our) grave when he rejected Amare's reasonable offer of $14m over 5 with all years guaranteed, back in Feb of last year. Everyone knew if Sarver couldn't get an extension done before the end of the season, he'd be bidding against Amare's higher demands and also MAX offers from other teams.

I guess time will tell.

Sarver really dug our grave when he didn't resign Joe Johnson. Honestly, Marion, Nash, Stoudemire, and Johnson made up a big 4 that. They needed more time to push through for a championship and may have already won a few if they stuck together. The extended playoff pushes, jersey sales, and corporate $$ would have been able to pay for the extra salary. Sarver is cheap bastard!

Sarver is not "cheap" because we've been at or over the cap very often....Sarver just isn't a basketball mind and gave mandates based on business, not always basketball.

What long term perspective? 10 years of sustained suckitude for a measly 30 mil guaranteed money? Sarver may still make money the way Clippers did the past 40 years, but I hardly understand why fans would support that kind of existence, as well as decisions that cause it.

That mainly because the majority couldn't see the potential of Amare as a leader and franchise player without Nash. They didn't anticipate Amare's development in his game after going to NY. When Boozer gets 80 mil guaranteed, given all his missed games (he missed more than Amare over the same length of career so far), how could anyone seriously see Sarver willing to pay any PF of impact, not to mention whether they'd want to join the Suns with only Nash on it.

Jason hit the nail right on the head here. The decision wouldn't have looked so bad if we had actually made an effort to get a SOLID Power Forward as a replacement. Someone like Paul Millsap.

I knew they had medical advice before making that offer, but i didn't know it was the training staff. Given the high opinion we have of Aaron and co. I agree even more completely with the decision.

Note that as well as he's playing, and he's a legit MVP candidate, Stat's knees have been bugging him already. They are riding him hard.

No mistake - I would love to have kept him here but that's an awful lot of money to gamble on how he holds up 4-5 years from now.
