Could someone clear this up with me ? They are only 2 and half games behind Memphis who has the 8th seed.

Actually, they're 4 games behind Memphis with a pretty tough schedule ahead of them (OKC, San Antonio twice, New Orleans, Chicago, Dallas). On top of that, the Suns are going to have to finish the season with a better record than Memphis because Memphis has the tie breaker after having won the season series.

So we need to gain 5 games on Memphis with 10 games left.
They can go .500 and we'd still have to win out

so far i'm pretty close to my season prediction. i think we end up around 38-42 now. Terrible season. Feel horrible for Nash and the team -- betrayed by Sarver and the FO.

They aren't mathematically eliminated. Just realistically.

Don't know why you guys are looking at Memphis I'm looking at the Hornets. Look at their remaining games:
vs Portland
vs Memphis
vs Indiana
vs Houston
vs Phoenix
@ Memphis
vs Utah
@ Dallas

I want to see us play great......and still lose. Utah is just half a game behind us, and i'd rather have the 12th pick instead of the 13th.

Pssh...
it's totally possible.
We just have to go 9-1 against a brutal schedule.
The Hornets have to go 3-4 against a not-so-brutal schedule.
And then we'd also need help from the Rockets.
(actually, I still don't know if we'd catch the Hornets...depends on the tiebreaker.)

Do you really think that this Suns team will win 10 straight? Especially when they played like crap on the two absolute must win games. And there's a good chance that might not even be enough.
Although obviously it would be sad and pathetic if the team gave up since there is still the smallest of chances.

If we go 9-1 and the loss isn't to NOLA, LAC or SAC (chances: maybe 3%) AND the Hornets go 3-5 (chances: 20-25%):
Both teams finish 45-37
1) Neither team is a division champ...
2) Head-to-head is 2-2...
3) Next tiebreaker is division record: Suns would be 10-6. Memphis would be anywhere from 8-8 to 11-5 depending on who the losses were to. We want the losses to be against Memphis (twice), Houston and Dallas, which they likely would be in this scenario. If NOLA's div. record is 10-6, then it goes to...
4) Conference record
5) Win % against the other seven Western playoff teams
All this would also apply if we went 8-2 and NOLA 2-6 OR 7-3:1-7 OR 6-4:0-8.

They already gave up. Hence Gortat quote.

Saying that you no longer believe the Suns are going to be in the playoffs is not the same thing as giving up. Giving up would be not trying to win games anymore.

It's mathmatically possible that im going to win the powerball. Enough said.
On a sidenote, I believe the lottery (non basketball im talking powerball etc) is nothing more than a tax on people who are bad at math.

PJ O'Rourke called it "ignorance tax"
