Man...our roster just isnt good. Im really looking at it right now lol... outside of dudley, gortat and frye, we dont have much. (assuming we get rid of nash and hill, which we might not)
On the other hand -
Gortat, Frye and Chilly as 5/4/3 is a decent rebounding and defensive unit, only one 3-point shooter but a good slashing/alley-oop SF, a tough center who can finish the pick and roll. Hope that Lawal comes back to where he was a year ago and you have a good banger who is committed to his role and enjoys getting physical. Be nice if Chills could develop an outside shot ...
PG is, all things considered, still one of the best in the league and yes, a defensive liability but witha better defensive frontcourt, we can minimize the damage. Pietrus and Duds are both solid at the off-guard, 3-pt shooters and both capable defenders. Everyone mentioned so far is a competitor - none of them take nights off.
the second line is less ... good, shall we say
Grant Hill, excellent leadership, very good defender, rebounder and reliable offensively - though not a great 3-pt shooter he has improved and is much less hesitant. Doug Collins said many times when he was broadcasting, that he used to use Hill as PG when he was shorthanded .... i wonder of that's an option on the second line? At any rate we have Dowdell, who is a good backup, and cheap cheap cheap.
I'd play Duds as the 2 rather than start him, hoping for more of that off the bench energy we had 2 years ago.
Dowdell, Duds, Lopez, Hill, Lawal. That's a little light on the scoring but it's what we've got, right? I can't remember what ZD is like defensively but I think he's okay - Duds is solid and Grant is exceptional - Lawal will get used but he's a banger and a proud player - he'll give it right back. Lopez even at his best was never a very good rebounder. This is where we need to draft a guy with the build and length, to rebound and carve out turf, and the desire. Byombo, Faried, Singleton - all seem like the right type of player.
(And one more time, juts to amuse Frank, it would be nice to bring Janning back - he can play both guard slots but is a very good 2, excellent outside shot and great attitude and ethic. Think Vasquez with a touch of Nash. Like Steve he has great court vision and instincts - he knows the right basketball play to make. Also, cheap like cabbage.)
In play we have VC, who may or may not be dealt as an expiring but will certainly be gone by camp. That leaves ABrooks who did not cover himself with glory in his time here, to date. My preference is to peddle him to someone who wants a feisty, scoring PG and hopefully get someone more useful back.
If Lopez can get back to anything like he was he'll be a good second-string 5, and still easy on the payroll for the next year.
It's not that bad a set of guys - short on stars but long of teamwork and chemistry, witha PG who will get the most out of his teammates.
We're one good trade and a smart draft away from being a pretty good team, and on the road back to competition.
oooops - forgot Hak - well, I guess we'll use him where we can and hope for a way out. He won't be in favour with the announced commitment to defense, but if he ever committed to that and went after some boards he'd be very valuable. To someone
