WT: Suns to Buy Out Carter

Post#1 » by Miklo » Mon Jun 20, 2011 2:22 am

Per the wiretap:

http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/214194/Report_Suns_To_Buy_Out_Carter

Discuss.

I personally think it's really dumb not to try to trade his contract, but this doesn't surprise me.

I think they (SUNS FO) know that teams are banking on the No-Season or Short-Season strike, hence saving a years worth of salary or atleast half of it from over paid players.

I think they should trade it for some reinforcements, but I also understand that they want 2012 Financial flexibility...

There aren't many teams out there that want to cut payroll, and the teams that do, I don't want their garbage.

what buyout?the contract is a $4m parting gift or they pick up the option

this has NOTHING, NOTHING to do with Sarver being cheap

how is there a buyout when the guy gets a independence day check for $4m to leave the team

this story i think is misleading. its not a buyout - its the team not picking up the $18m and paying $4m

so, i will be the first in line to blast Sarver for fiscal irresponsibility but this isn't one of those times. either Carter gets the option picked up at $18m or he gets paid off for $4m I do not disagree with this move at all.

It's not an option that needs to be picked up or declined it's a contract that is only guaranteed for 4m. They could choose to hold on to him and trade him at any point for a team looking for savings. It just so happens this is a really bad time to have such a contract at your disposal since other teams are still sitting on large TPE and everyone is waiting on the new CBA.

Really the only way the Suns could trade Carter would be if they were willing to make large contractual commitment in 2012 and possibly beyond. At this point they'd be better off going the other direction and trying to free up 2012 space.

No surprise whatsoever. It was pretty much a given that we would buy him out. $18m is way too much to have in our books, whether it's with VC or with other guys. Would've loved to see us move VC for DIaw and SJax but I'm not disappointed at all since this was pretty much expected to happen.

So...where does VC end up...

I could see him actually thriving in LA as a big guard off the bench along with Odom

But I doubt he accepts a bench job...

Seems like par for the course for the Suns. No surprise to see the $arver taking what could be a great trade asset and instead keeping the salary savings for himself.

mh, i don´t know what to think of that - what would be the cap situation if we, let´s say trade pietrus for a tpe and a 2nd rounder? i believe teams like detroit, san antonio, boston could be interested in mikael.. even with the new cap situation it´s a solid move from sarver - of course i would love to get something in return for him but we wouldn´t be the suns if we like to build a great team

Props to the great one

If they have heard all the offers, if there were any to begin with, and nothing helps our team, why not buy him out?

This has to be done before June 30th. I just hope we don't give him more than what is guaranteed. What else would there be needed to work out? Write the check and give him a good swift kick in the arse. If there is any prolongment, it would be to see if any more offers come our way.

My money is on the Knicks. With them needing a SG, and Dantoni's notoriously easy practices, i think he would be a good fit.

Billups/VC/Melo/Amare <--- Thats an All-Star team from 4 years ago.

Ehh.. Dont really mind that we didnt try to tarde his contract, as I doubt teams would be willing to give up young talent just for his expiring. If his contract was traded, we probably would've got a bad contract in return.... So this is probably the best option.

Wonder how much we could have paid him to buy him out immediately after trading for him. Might have saved us a few wins, and a whole helluva lot of headache.

No surprise, was only a question of "when" it'd happen.

He should sign with the Bulls on cheap if he cares about anything.

When motivated he's way better then Bogans and Brewer, specially at shooting, which is Chicago's major weakness. If he wants, he can be the final missing piece of a championship team that way...

If nothing else, it's a decent strategy for the front office.

"Oh, we're going to buy him out regardless. We don't really want to trade"

**Teams that thought PHX had his contract on the table worry, offer slightly more to dump salary**

Opt. 1 - Take increased offer

Opt. 2 - **Still, nothing looks good**

"Nope, like we said. We're just going to buy him out"

Of course, we all expected it would happen this way. I'm going to run the numbers on what this means for us.
