I'm not sure how severe Gortat's injury is, but if anything it gives Lopez the opportunity to showcase his new athleticism, and maybe can be quite a valuable trade chip.

It's irritating. If Lopez can re-gain his form why in the world would we want to trade him.
We would be without a backup center and Lopez is young and can get better. A healthy Lopez is exactly the kind of player this team needs to rebuild and you want to ship him for scraps if he can get back to where he was pre-back surgery.
It would make more sense to package Gortat because he has value, because he is 28 years old and move some contracts with him to get capspace or additional chips to rebuild with if Lopez has a breakout year.

You're assuming Lopez can maintain that.
You sell Lopez high if you can. You keep Gortat.

Lopez will never be a 2nd, or even 3rd row center in the league. He's too limited by his body, coordination, let's say - hi's a big wooden Pinocchio. But Suns need a backup center. Trade Lopez - OK, but only for another big fella.

And you are assuming Gortat can maintain his which is not any more or less likely.
Lopez has not reached his peak in terms of value, Gortat more than likely has and is in his prime right now. So you trade Gortat especially since he will be over the hill before our rebuilding process will produce decent results.

@paulcoro Paul Coro
Gortat's right thumb has a slight non-displaced fracture. He'll sit out Thur. game & practices but likely will play as it heals for 2-3 wks.
Good news!

That's ridiculous. Gortat had never started until midway through last year and he just started playing with a guy like Nash last year. Robin Lopez has gotten more playing time and with better players. Robin will never be much more than an energy guy....but a clumsy one at that. Gortat is better in all facets and is still getting better. Trading Gortat would be ridiculous because he is probably the only player we have other than Nash and Hill who play well above their contract and is underpaid.

Toronto apparently not re-signing Alex Ajinca - I like his skills. Needs to learn a lot, and put on some muscle, but he's a worthwhile project

I was considering that option as well Mar, but Robin Lopez already has been injury prone in his short career, while Gortat has remained pretty durable. Gortat, hasn't played heavy minutes either for his age, so he's more like a young 28 year old.
Now, if Lopez showed some sort of improvement on his post moves, Boris Diaw like, and was consistent at it, then maybe you keep him. But if that happens, more than likely, he'll be traded mid-season for someone like Mayo/Beasley/Randolph (with a possible draft pick).

Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!! This is something I agree with and ALL of my other basketball friends who are not Suns' fans. Gortat is the best thing we have outside of Nash when it comes to a trade chip! Why have Gortat on this team with or without Nash? Gortat is a perfect center for a team competing for a title, not us............and why trade Lopez for scraps?!!! So we can have more scraps and keep Gortat? Trade Gortat for Beas and Randolph in a threeway or whatever!!!

Could be, but at his best Doris was very good. He looked damn impressive in the Charlotte game earlier this week
