Good Job Rookie.....Keiff Morris!!

Post#1 » by Cutter » Sat Dec 24, 2011 3:14 am

The rookie did well in this shortened offseason! This is a VERY small sample set....only 2 pre-season games. The table below shows each of the Top 15 draft picks in 2011, and how they ranked by EFF for the 2 pre-season games.

Keiff and Jimmer tied at Eff = +17.00 (taken from NBA.com/Players). Notice brother Marcus Morris was 4th place behind Kyrie Irving the #1 pick in the draft.

These numbers do not predict how these rookies will play in the regular season. But it is fun to see the Suns rookie do well this pre-season.

edit: How do many NBA coaches quickly evaluate a player's game performance? They check his efficiency.

NBA.com evaluates all players based on the efficiency formula:
((Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks) - ((Field Goals Att. - Field Goals Made) + (Free Throws Att. - Free Throws Made) + Turnovers)).

I think he just needs to control his fouls and his minutes will go up, he looks decent. Better than Warrick.

I added the EFF formula that NBA.com uses to my original post.

You are right about the fouls. Definitely the big stat that jumps out at you is his foul rate. needs to get that under control, while still putting up decent numbers.

That might be true, but IMO Warrick was the second best player this pre-season, only behind Markieff.

If Morris starts this season, and gets 30+ minutes a game, I could envision him putting up 15 and 8 with 2 blocks per games playing with Nash. (If he keeps his fouls down)

Yes, but knowing the Suns attitude towards rookies, it would also be highly unrealistic. :(

30 plus minutes for a rookie would never happen, especially when it seems that Gentry is OBLIGATED to play Channing as many minutes as possible even though he'd be 0-20 from the field

What attitude ? Are you referring to the D'Ant method of youth development... toughen them up on the bench ? Didnt Gentry give Goran burn.... Lopez.... ? I dont know what you expect... but considering we havent had that much rookie talent, I think it is incorrect to generalize about our 'rookie policy' as being one of bench-rotting.

We'll see on that. Last yr, Frye-baby had essentially no back up that could shoot.

Wait, hold on a second.......Did we make a good draft pick? :o

EDIT: Just found out his brother Marcus dropped 20. Gonna be interesting to see how they both compare this season. Hopefully Kieff gets minutes this year. At least we have Gentry and not D'antoni because we all know D'antoni's history with rookies. Kieff would sit on the end of the bench all year until he got traded for a pack of gum.

I agree for the most part, but you can't really mention D'antoni in the same breath. It's not like there are a ton of players flourishing in the league that D'antoni refused to play.

That being said, Keiff will certainly have his chances to be a regular rotation player. And anyone who can reduce Warrick's minutes is alright in my book.

Maybe next season he might come close to those numbers, but I don't see him doing that as a rookie

Does anybody know if he is for sure gonna get minutes against NO? He isn't 3rd string is he? We need to get rid of Warrick.

I just caught the PHO-DEN highlights and noticed Warrick @ SF in the zone. He got some leakouts and a lob over DEN smaller Corey Brewer.

Is that something you'd like to see more of.

That aside I wished Suns had gone with upside and rebuilt this year.

Nash for 1st round picks and guards

pg
sg
Warrick pad #s at the 3.
Motiejunas (draft)
Lopez

that would have been a great rebuild and a high pick imo.

.

Gentry gave Lopez and Dragic good burn in their second season... I didnt think they really saw the floor much in their first season.

That is true, but after how much the NBa world raved about Earl Clark (a former lottery pick), and how much floor time he actually got..... Well... I dont know?

via Coro:
Rookie power forward Markieff Morris has played so well that Gentry considered starting him. The thought was purely based on Morris' performance and not the shooting struggles of Channing Frye, who Gentry said he has no worries about finding his groove.

Gentry said there still could be situations that prompt him to start Morris, whose court feel and intelligence have impressed the staff beyond the toughness, rebounding and shooting they expected to get.

Like most Suns newcomers, Morris needs to be prodded to shoot more. The Suns chart open shots that were not taken, saying they hurt the team as much as bad shots. Morris passed up four in Thursday night's preseason loss to Denver.

"On one, he said, 'Well, I just took the last two shots, Coach,'" Gentry said. "I said, 'You don't understand. Here, if you have five open shots, you shoot five open shots.'"

If Gentry keeps starting a cold shooting Frye over this kid then he needs to be shown the door.

Agree Kieff is like Frye, except he plays D, rebounds, and is a more physical presence on the court,

oh, and he shoots better.

He is like Frye without the flaws.

I was agitating for us to take Keef from early spring and i'm glad to see him showing his stuff, but he needs to lay more than two games to be a "better shooter" than Frye. Frye is a damn good player and he works his ass off. If Vince Carter had worked like Fry or Duds, or had half the heart, he'd be first ballot HOF
