I honestly don't know what we're going to do with him when he comes back. My guess is that his rights are traded for a late 1st in the 25-30 range, or an early 2nd.

The Suns cant sign him right?... I'm not familiar with his situation.

If the Suns can get a first for him... do it.

Brooks is still our property, but he's not under contract with us. When he comes back in March, he'll be a RFA, so I'd imagine that we'd have to sign him just so he could play for a month. I'm not 100% sure, but if we don't sign him prior to this coming offseason, then I think he will be an UFA. Again, I have no Idea if this is the case.

If I'm right though, I'm pretty sure that some contender would be willing to give up their late 1st to sign him for the rest of the season for the playoffs. Miami and the Lakers would probably be interested.

Then trade his rights for a late to mid-late pick.... he's worth a pick in the early 20s..

I don't think you can trade his rights. He wasn't a draft pick of ours. We could trade the rights to Collins, who is playing overseas, because we drafted him. But it doesn't apply to Brooks.

We offered him the QO, so until he rejects that, no one can sign him as far as I know. But if he rejects that offer anyone can give him an offer that we could still match, which is why there was a cap hold on our salary.

Whats up with Dwayne Collins btw?

I remember when we drafted him I actually thought he'll be solid off the bench in a year or two.

Paul Coro tweeted a response to someone a couple weeks ago that it would be highly unlikely that the Suns keep him...

This makes no sense. We traded for his rights and got all his rights when we did so. Whether or not the Suns drafted him makes no difference.

Coro tweeted: "Signing Brooks in April is doubtful", not "highly unlikely".

BTW the new CBA doesn't allow sign-and-trades in the middle of the season.

You can only trade the rights to drafted players that have yet to be signed. At the bottom of the trade machine, or any trade checker for that matter, you will see this option, plus any TPEs a team may have, which could be added to a trade. However, you will NEVER see RFAs rights as options for trade, because they are NOT signed players. The only non signed players, who's rights can be traded, are unsigned draftees, who's rights have not expired.

It makes no sense, because you don't understand. Example, when Juan Carlos Navaro was still playing overseas but was drafted by I think NJ, his rights were traded before they expired to Memphis for a second rounder (again if I remember correctly). Brooks is not under contract with us, so he can not be traded by us, it's as simple as that. :o

It's too bad he had to sign in China. He would have a made a world of difference for our second unit this season. We'd probably be about 500 right now (not that I would like that if I didn't think we could compete in the playoffs, but for the future, he'd be a nice piece to have).

The Brooks situation is completely explained here.

It basically means that if Brooks is going to play basketball in the NBA this season, its probably going to be for the Phoenix Suns.

Can we get him before the trade deadline?

When's the trade deadline?

Chances are low though cause Brooks is playing awesome basketball and his team is doing really good so they will likely make it very far in the CBA playoffs.

Read the Larry Coon link, it explains the entire situation. Brooks either plays here or with the Globetrotters.

Here, I'll help you. Mastering the click and read procedure is sometimes tricky 8-) .

A sign-and-trade arrangement, in which one of these players is signed by his previous team and immediately traded to a new team, is out of the question. The new collective bargaining agreement prohibits sign-and-trades after the season starts.

There are just three possibilities that could allow Chandler and Brooks to play for another NBA team. First, if either player’s team’s season ends before March 1, he will be free to return to the NBA and could sign an offer sheet with another team before the deadline.

Second, their Chinese teams could release them prior to March 1, even though they are still playing. But even if Brooks or Chandler is granted his release, obtaining a FIBA letters of clearance is uncertain. For example, Kenyon Martin was released by the Xinjiang Guanghui Flying Tigers midway through the Chinese season, but was only granted his letter of clearance when the Flying Tigers failed to respond to FIBA’s request in the allotted time.

The last possibility is if Brooks or Chandler return to the NBA after March 1, the Suns or Nuggets could renounce them, making them unrestricted free agents. They would then be free to sign with any team. However this would require a measure of goodwill on the part of the teams, since either team could reclaim its rights to restricted free agency by submitting a new qualifying offer by June 30.

So if these players return to the NBA after March 1 and don’t sign with their previous teams, they likely must wait until this summer – when they again will be subject to restricted free agency. It’s potentially a no-win situation for both.

I am assuming we have his rights till the end of the season. Possible trade then ? I dunno.... but I can see how his decision to go Chinese could easily have rankled the FO, considering what was given up for him. I wonder if their relations are somewhat frosty. We'll likely never know, but Brooks is a black eye.... that ca''nt be concealed even with orange shades.

Personally, the only face-saving move the FO could make at this point, would be to sign Dragic back in the off season.
