Official Summer League Thread

Post#1 » by Dragic13 » Sat Jun 30, 2012 7:27 am

Here is a place we can discuss undrafted prospects leading up to the summer league, our summer league team, and also discuss the games as they air live.

NBA summer leagues feature rosters that are different from the regular season. A team's summer league roster usually features a mix of (1) rookies that the team just drafted, (2) a few other players signed to that team, and (3) various undrafted players and free agents looking to get signed to that team or any other team. If a player is a free agent, and that player gets invited to play on a certain summer league team, that team obviously has some interest in him, but the player is hoping to get signed to that team or any other team that happens to be impressed by him.

With the Summer league approaching and taking place in:

Orlando on July 9th-13th

Las Vegas on July 13th-22nd

Who are the players you wish to see invited to the Suns camp?

Here is a list of the top 10 undrafted prospects via:
http://www.sbnation.com/2012/6/29/31257 ... rew-gordon

1. Scott Machado (Iona)

I'm not sure what UNC's Kendall Marshall did, besides have much better teammates, to be viewed as such a better prospect than Machado. At 6'1'' and 205 pounds, Machado is athletic enough to be an NBA PG while putting up absolutely absurd statistics in college: 13.6 points on 49.5-percent shooting and 40.4-percent from deep, 4.9 rebounds and 9.9 assists on 2.6 turnovers a game.

He's a pure point guard who did a magnificent job running Iona's uptempo offense. Last year was a good year for lightly regarded young point guards (Jeremy Lin, Isaiah Thomas). Machado, if given the right opportunity, could follow in their footsteps.

2. Drew Gordon (New Mexico)

Gordon and Kevin Jones were my two draft sleepers who didn't end up being selected. Gordon, a UCLA transfer, has two things going for him when it comes to making a roster: a legitimate skill (rebounding) and an NBA position as an athletic 6'9, 240 power forward.

3. Kevin Jones (West Virginia)

Jones' low shooting percentages from deep last year (27 percent) probably doomed his chances of being drafted, but if you dig a little deeper, they could be a little misleading. When he was a sophomore on a Final Four-bound team, playing as a role player instead of a featured contributor, he shot 40 percent from deep. If he can regain his stroke, he has a rare combination of long distance shooting and offensive rebounding (4.3 a game as a senior).

4. Henry Sims (Georgetown)

I have a soft spot for big men who can pass the basketball, and Sims, like many of the products of John Thompson III's Princeton offense, can pass the hell out of the ball. He's 6'10'' and 250 pounds with a 7'4 wingspan, and he averaged 3.5 assists a game! There's value in that.

5. William Buford (Ohio State)

A jack-of-all-trades but a master of none, Buford is a reasonably athletic 6'6'', 215-pound wing who can shoot from the perimeter (36 percent) and handle the ball without embarrassing himself. He reminds me of San Antonio's Danny Green, another role-playing wing who was somewhat overshadowed on a high profile college team.

6. Terrell Stoglin (Maryland)

Stoglin is undersized at 6', 185 pounds, but he's a natural scorer with a deadly pull-up jumper who can effectively create shots for himself off the bounce. He was also a much better distributor as a freshman (3.3 assists on 2.3 turnovers) as opposed to a sophomore (1.9 assists on 2.2 turnovers), when there was less talent around him.

7. Hollis Thompson (Georgetown)

He's got the size (6'8'', 205 pounds) and the stroke (43 percent) to be a replacement-level small forward. He's a better prospect, in my mind, than Syracuse SF Kris Joseph, who went in the second round.

8. JaMychal Green (Alabama)

There isn't one thing Green does exceptionally well, but he's an NBA caliber athlete at 6'8'', 220 pounds. However, teams prefer for their backup power forwards to be either a 3/4 or a 4/5 hybrid. Green doesn't offer nearly that type of defensive versatility.

9. Reggie Johnson (Miami)

If you watched Johnson brutalize Duke's centers (14 points, 8-10 from the foul line, eight rebounds) at the front of the rim in Miami's 77-74 loss to the Blue Devils in March, you would have a hard time believing Miles Plumlee would be drafted, in the first round no less, and Johnson wouldn't. He reminds me of Miami's Dexter Pittman.

Editor's Note: Johnson is actually returning to school and will be eligible for the 2013 NBA Draft. We regret the error.

10. Wesley Witherspoon (Memphis)

The last of John Calipari's recruits at Memphis, Witherspoon has got interesting size for a SF at 6'9'' and 205 pounds. He's long, athletic and he's not a bad three-point shooter (37 percent last year), but he never put it all together in his four years at Memphis.

Missed the cut:

Jordan Taylor (Wisconsin)

J'Covan Brown (Texas)

Tu Holloway (Xavier)

Xavier Gibson (Florida State)

Renardo Sidney (Mississippi State)

Our roster in 2010:

55 Earl Clark F
60 Dwayne Collins F
7 Zabian Dowdell G
34 Gavin Edwards F
32 Taylor Griffin F
15 Lawrence Hill F
23 Matt Janning G
11 Brandon Johnson G
0 Marcus Johnson F
31 Gani Lawal F
18 Anton Ponkrashov F
50 Shaun Pruitt F-C
1 Scottie Reynolds G
10 Ryan Toolson G

So what will our roster be this year?

I would love if we could pick up Drew Gordon. He was one of the guys i was hoping we would snag with a 2nd round pick. I hear Machado is planning on playing for the Raptors Summer League team.

Why Toronto!

They already have PGs signed through next year and are trying to get Nash!

I bet if they get Nash they wont go after him....and if they dont get him in the FA they will go after Machado....Doesnt mean we cant steal him. Telfair isnt going to last forever...I dont mind him to much. He has great defense But on the offense of end I think we could use a better PG.

I know what some people are thinking though:

We are trying to keep Steve Nash as well, Have a qualifying offer on Aaron Brooks, have Sebastian Telfair through next year, drafted Kendall Marshall, and now want Machado!?

But I dont think we are keeping Nash or Brooks.

So Our PG rotation would be Marshall, Machado/Telfair

And Telfair will be gone after next season.

Seeing what he can do in summer league I think will interest alot of teams.

Add Jet Chang to that list too! Kid has a lot of potential and can be our starter at SG.

Plus Sarver can make $$ off his marketing value!

"While checking out Terrence Ross and Arnett Moultrie in L.A., we were pleasantly surprised with the addition of a player that we had never seen (or heard of, for that matter) before. 6-5 Tsung-hsien Chang, more commonly known as “Jet”, matched up against Ross and showed that he could be the next Asian that you hear coming across your TV screen."

I checked out his workout video and the game where he dropped 43 points.

He looks pretty solid.

To bad there isnt to much more.

For a summer league team it would be a good gamble. He would be excited he is given another shot to make the NBA. And if he proves himself we need a SG.

If we can somehow get rid of Frye I would be ok with another PF.

I dont think we can get rid of Warrick that easily.

But I am sure some1 will be interested in Frye.

Frye doesnt play in the paint, rebound, or is physical so I would be estatic if we cold get a player like Gordon that could do just all those things.

Zabian is only a year younger than Telfair. I like the guy but we should be keeping our eye on some younger prospects.

I mean if we are going to invite Zabian we might as well send Telfair. They are roughly the same player and same age. I know we wouldnt but you get the point....We already have "that" guy.

Spying younger talent is the way to go.

Renardo Sidney would be a good addition. Once a damn good prospect, DAMN he's fallen off the face of the Earth. Would be worth a look.

No way Childress plays in the summer league. I'd be absolutely shocked if Lopez did too.
