This is exactly what I wanted. Not because im in love with Scola and Brown but they are both on cheap deals that give us serviceable but not star players so we should hopefully get some lottery love next year. Well played front office. /golfclap

New Lineup

Dragic/ Telfar(prob)/Marshall
Brown/Dudley
Beasey/Warrik
Scola/Morris
Gortat/Frye/Lopez

Even though we wont win a ton of games I will still have fun watching the young bucks like Beas, Goran and Keiff. I dont know about you guys but from what ive seen so far in summer league I am excited to see what kind of year Morris has. :P

Scola? You like his deal, yet won't let him play? And I think this was covered in the offseason thread. :D

After everything we have been through this offseason, at least we got Shannon on a great deal. :D

We got Dragic, Scola and Beasley as well. It remains to be seen how the additions will pan out but they're all pretty good players so I'm not sure why you're implying the offseason was atrocious.

Oh.

No Terrence Williams?

I honestly forgot to put him in -its fixed now. You guys are brutul btw.

One question about Brown though-

Shannon Brown has agreed to a two-year, $7 million deal with the Suns. The second season of the contract is half guaranteed.

Can anyone expand on what this means? I didnt know you could half guarantee things :P

It means we can buy him out next year. His salary in 2013 is slated to be like $4.3M, so if we dont want him, we only have to give him a little over $2M.

You've seen the numbers. Why would he get 2.7 then 4.3?

I guess i was wrong. For some reason i thought it was different (an escalating pay scale).

Shannon Brown, 26, will return to Phoenix for a two-year, $7 million contract. Half of the second-year, $3.5 million salary is guaranteed.

So it guess its split evenly, $3.5M the first year and $3.5M the 2nd year, so we could buy him out for $1.75M instead of the $2M i originally thought.

So does that mean next summer if we need just a bit more cap room for the free agent period we can just pay him $1.75 to walk which would then free up $1.75 under our cap?

If so the contract is even better than I thought.

We pay him the $1.75M to walk and i believe that the total amount ($3.5M) comes off the books. Now i said i believe, but i could be wrong, and if i am wrong, im sure i will be corrected.

If we buy him out the 1.75 million will count against the cap.

Interestingly enough, he's not as bad as people think:

Basically, the conclusion is that Eric Gordon is better than all the options, but that Mayo, Lee and Hill were NOT statistically any more valuable than Shannon Brown.

Gordon got 4 yrs, $58 mil; Hill got 5 yrs, $40 mil; Lee got 4 yrs, $20+ mil; Mayo got 2 yrs, $9 mil; Brown got 2 yrs, $7.5 mil (only $5.25 mil guaranteed).

And John you dont have to love him hes only a cheap stand in until next seasons moves. Thats why I love that we can just buy him out next summer to free up more cap.

From my standpoint, it's not about the contract (even though I don't like the second year) it's about the player. Why don't bring in some guys with potential on a clear one year deal and maybe even a team option. Brown won't help us next season and in the future. Take a chance at some unproven guys.

To answer your question we know what Brown will give us. Remember we dont want to get too good too quick and end up ruining our lottery pick next year. They could have signed better players I really think they are going for a 1 year tank. And honestly I think its a good thing as we can let Beasley, Morris and Goran develop some chemistry and let them play through next years mistakes. Not sure how much burn Marshall will get though even during a tank/rebuild year. His lack of scoring is still a problem; I say we stick him in the gym for a year and make him shoot 9000 jumpers a day.

Moreover, due to the new stretch provision, if the Suns waive Brown between July 1-August 31 of next year, “then his remaining salary is paid over twice the number of years remaining on his contract, plus one,” in equal installments, according to Larry Coon’s CBA FAQ.
