Well, that sucks. We have more personnel at those positions but still, this could hurt.

Horrible news. He is one of my favorite current players
I understand now why we sign Solomon Jones.

:/ That sucks. Hoping the dude makes a swift recovery. Wasn't there another player like... last season that had the same thing? And I'm pretty sure he made it back in a few months.
Channing has had such awful luck the past few seasons...

Jeff Green had an aortic aneurysm.
This is scary and disappointing news. Best wishes for Channing Frye.

Re: Channing Frye Out Indefinitely
Asked a cardiologist about it.
He said that whether or not the cause is viral doesn’t matter too much, since if there’s cardiac damage, then there’s probably no longer an active viral infection to try to treat.
He also said that “viral” cardiomyopathy is a diagnosis of exclusion. It is very difficult to figure out whether or not there is an active viral infection upon biopsy, so they try to rule out the other, more visible causes first. As far as we know, he’s not an alcoholic. He hasn’t had chemo or been exposed to other radiation. He could be hypertensive(high blood pressure) but that would be very, very rare in a guy <30. And he’s not pregnant….
So that leaves “idiopathic”(medical term for “we have no idea”), “genetic”, or “viral”. It is very difficult, costly, and time-consuming to do genetic panels to see if patients actually have a heritable genetic defect in their cardiac muscle fibers, to the point that most physicians don’t do them for the majority of patients. That leaves “viral” as the diagnosis.
Since Channing is a multi-millionaire who works for an organization that’s worth hundreds of millions of dollars, I’m sure he’ll be one of the select few to actually get those panels run, but ultimately, whatever the cause is, they’ll still treat his DCM the way they treat any other congestive heart failure. Beta blockers(which lower heart rate and contractility in order to reduce the amount of oxygen that the heart demands, along with treating any potential hypertension), ACE inhibitors(which also treat hypertension, in addition to slowing down the enlargement of the heart), and diuretics(which reduce the fluid overload in the body in order to reduce the amount of congestion in the heart), along with other drugs.
They’ll reevaluate him in December to basically get an initial read on whether or not the treatment is working(is the heart pumping as much blood as it should, is there anything visibly weird on the echo, etc.)
Most patients respond pretty well to treatment after a year. After a year of treatment, there’s 3 outcomes:
1) Heart function has increased and is on its way back to normal. Frye will most likely be back in uniform.
2) Heart function hasn’t gotten better, but it hasn’t gotten worse. It’s just stabilized. Doctors will have to make a judgement call.
3) Heart function has continued to worsen, and he is on his way to heart failure. At that point, they start looking at pacemakers, transplants, etc, but Frye will never play again.
Here’s hoping for option 1.
