Also, for the last 151 games our team as a whole hasn't been better than most of the teams in the league. If you look at what we have done: we almost made the playoffs the two previous seasons sporting Nash, Gortat and then bench players. Remember Terry Porter? He had a lot of talent and didn't fair well. That's what an actually bad coach/ wrong system looks like. We brought in Gentry and look what he did with a similar team the next year: a WCF appearance. A coach can really only do so much with such a lack of talent on the team.
We just need to wait. Look at all those rebuilding teams who keep firing their coaches...They barely get better. Coaches always become scapegoats and distract from rosters that simply aren't very good.
I see what you are saying, but I just don't think it applies to Gentry. I don't give him credit for the 2010 team, nor doi give him a bunch of credit after stepping in for Porter. Gentry simply went back to D'Antoni's style, and let LB go crazy, and Nash run the offense.
The 2010 team was a fluke. Gentry lucked out with the quality if the character of the team. We really only had two minor black holes on the team, and they were split between the two squads. Both those squads had great chemistry, great floor leadership in Nash and Hill, and probably the best balls out hustle guy I've seen in years. Like I just said in another thread, that type of hustle became the norm and the standard that the TEAM held amongst themselves. When each starter was interviewed they sang praises about their sub, all except Amare, who I guess didn't understand the question he was asked about the second unit.
Again, my critiques on Gentry has little to do with our talent, and more about how he manages them, the game, and the responsibity. IMHO I just don't think he is a good enough coach to be a head coach. Good assistant. I just look at what he has done in games, how we still continue to lose winnable games. Those same schedule starts of first and third quarters regardless of who is playing well, and the list goes on.
And although I've suggested Turner, I am really tired of this bring up the understudy for our next long term coach. We've been doing it since Ainge was coach, and only interrupted by the terrible Porter hiring, which by the way, all the players except Shaq really didnt seem to want to play under.
