Kendall Marshall

Post#1 » by Sunsdeuce » Mon Feb 11, 2013 3:18 pm

Would like to get your opinion on this guy. I personally think he will be out of the league in 2 years. Just don't see any potential there. Maybe I am wrong. He was a great passer in college but at NBA level that is a weakness from what I see.

He is obviously getting forced on us all by the suns front office. Blanks drafted Morris and this kid. Both have really disappointed. Morris has shown a few games so far in his career some potential but so far not much. Blanks is not a good evaluator of talent. Anyway......

Do you think he has a future in the league or is he a life long d leaguer? From what you have seen so far.

Thoughts?

I like what I've seen from him when he's gotten minutes. Still a very small sample size, but certainly not scrub-worthy as many people label him.

I think the D-League is no place for a true Point guard, which explains how much he struggled down there.

While on the court, he makes the smart play. Its not always flashy, but you can tell this kid really knows how to run an offence. I really would like to see him work on his handle and penetrate more, but it's still early days. His jumpshot looks alot more improved as well.

Still early I know, but I have been pretty impressed with this kid when he gets the minutes. He's a project player, and the only way to develop him is to play him.

I'm not going to say where he would be in two years, not fair on the kid. Lets take it slowly.

It's hard to evaluate Kendall because he is a true point guard who needs scorers to be effective and the Suns just don't have any players like that. His shooting looks to be improving though, he nailed a couple threes the other night, still has a long way to go, but at least he is getting better and not worse.

Well.... he will have another yr as a millionaire to prove himself, somewhere. Agree with above posts.....So far, he is playing OK in what little I have seen... but then again, he is a back up on a cellar dweller.

We just don't have a PF/C combo that plays as the roll men very well. Makes it really hard on Dragic and Marshall when they are not surrounding by shooters nor do they have a good PnR option. Morris, Scola, and Gortat are not anywhere near the caliber of Marion and Stoudemire. Their pick-n-roll prowess and finishing abilities really helped Nash a lot.

I do like Kendall's improvement he has shown on the three pointers.

I like the kid, he isnt better than Bassy but not as bad as he was made out to be. He is only a rook but shows he has no fear, the game is not too fast for him, and he can run an ofense.

I think he runs the offense very well and his ball handling is very good. He is "decent" on defense at least, so I think he can be a good general floor at some point in his career.
He reminds me Eric Snow, worse defensively of course but with better court vision.

I also liked what he has shown in the recent games, made some good passes and knocked down some threes and certainly has a good understanding of how to play the game. He kinda reminds me of the old version of Jason Kidd, just making the simple plays and only taking a shot in the offense if its really needed.

I meant old man Kidd, not the triple-double-Kidd from the early 2000s

There's a lot of potential in Kendall... I can easily see him be a 15 APG/9 APG point guard in the matter of 2-3 years tops.

And I'm dead serious.

There is 1 major reason that I dont like Marshall. He can improve his shooting but his lack of athleticism will hurt him on defense especially considering that the newer breeed of PGs seem to all rely on speed to blow by defenders.

What I dont understand is if they are trying to re-engineer with a more defensive mindframe looking forward why would you start with a PG who cant defend? I think they saw his raw passing ability and threw caution to the wind thinking 'well Nash wasnt known for his defense'; its the only way I can explain them drafting people who cant defend.

Sorry about the tangent...to answer your question I think he will be backup PG journeyman type. Even if he improves his jumper I dont ever see him as being a good defender; that being said I hope he proves me wrong.

IMO Marshall's lack of defense is a preconception he'll unfortunately never get rid of. Everybody's thinks he's a bad defender because of his draft report. He'll certainly never be a lockdown defender (because of his lack of athleticism, you said it) but has he really played bad D in the few games he played this season? I don't think so.
I think quite the opposite was the case, he played some solid D and definitely wasn't a liability.
