Jerry Colangelo

What shocks me about this board is the negative comments towards Jerry Colangelo some of you make when threads pop up about Robert Sarver.

These negative slams are not unique to REALGM, some people in the media have given him some parting jabs over the past 5 years as well.

Why?

No owner is perfect, but the Suns pulled off some great trades, signed some huge free agents, made some awesome draft picks, and were always competitive.

No one always makes the right decision, but I don't think any real fan could ever think that we didn't have a great owner who was intelligent, made the right move most of the time, and wanted to win.

Best of all, everyone respected Jerry Colangelo. Players, refs, coaches, league officials, and other executives. And it showed. I don't think anyone respects Robert Sarver.

If we had a chance to get Jerry Colangelo to come back and run this team, I'd jump for joy.

I don't see why pointing out that he ran up a debt of $201 million dollars mean we hate him. Do you think that a person who runs up a huge credit card debt should be judged on the nice things he or she bought? Or should they be judged by living beyond their means and not being responsible? If we are judging someone running a business, we have to look at this.

I have nothing against him personally, I had served him in a restaurant a few times, and he wasn't rude or anything.

.... and the players (as well as David Stern) had absolutely nothing to do with it? The '76 and '93 teams were amazing, but just couldn't get it done. I'm not sure what more Jerry could have done for them, to be honest.

Only a **** would say anything bad about Jerry. The whole reason the suns exIst is because of Jerry. He gave his heart and soul to this team. He wanted a championship more then anyone. That was basically his Baby. I
Don't consider anyone a suns fan that doesn't like Jerry. He went broke trying to get a championship.

Again anyone who says anything bad about him isn't a suns fan just a ****.

I still say Cotton Fitzsimmons was the heart and soul of the Suns organization. In the past he was a coach and Director of Player Personnel for the Suns. I really think the Suns miss his ability to evaluate talent. Since he passed the Suns really haven't gotten one good draft choice.

It's not our money, who cares? He did it to win us championships so you have to respect that. I doubt Sarver would go one penny in debt to bring our team success

Wang, that you? :o Or did he just post from your house?

If you don't understand the ramifications of causing a debt that size, then that's on you. And he didn't bring us a chip. Sarver has had huge payrolls trying to get a chip, why no respect for that? He also just spent $21 million to get rid of Chilldress, that's a lot of pennies.

Our home fanbase is pretty awful, and has been for years. I'm just happy the sucker JC found to buy up all that debt didn't move our team.

My point was that he tried. You don't have to like JC but there is no reason to get mad about money he spent when you are not the one paying for it  And as Shawnbronald said, we almost won titles in 76 and 93 because of the teams that he built. Colangelo deserves nothing but respect, we wouldn't even have a team if he didn't exist

Always liked Cotton, even when he sounded drunk commentating.

Why is it respectful to ignore the debt, which easily could have bankrupt the team, or made it prime pickings to move to a different state? And why is disrespectful to think that accruing that much debt is a terrible business move? Where did anyone say they were mad at him?

Oh well King,I don't think JC's mishandling of funds defines me as a fan. And I don't think that bringing up that fact when discussing a business owner is disrespectful. Remember him how you'd like, and I'll do the same. :D

So you would rather have penny-pinching Sarver over Colangelo as owner? Is that what you are insinuating? I respect your opinion, but Colangelo did a lot of amazing things for the Suns as well. You are just looking at one facet of his tenure and saying he was terrible

You don't respect my opinion or you wouldn't keep questioning me and pointing out a simple fact, as hate or dislike for JC. I've been a fan since the late seventies, I guess I just remember more than the one facet I pointed out, but dont feel the need to list everything. It goes nowhere. For if I spend all that time, you will just pick each one of them and either try and justify them, or brush them off as no big deal, like you have with accruing a debt larger than the worth of the team.

I have not said anything bad about JC, in fact my first post said I have nothing against him. Have a good day KoW.

Hey dog.... post that link to the sweet deal JC arranged with the stadium. Thinking that he went broke trying to get a championship doesn't add up. Sounds more like he leveraged his corporate debt (suns) to the hilt and didn't want to pay the piper. Especially when he could sell for a profit....

Did you just call me a cow? What? No need to call names dude, just wondering why you care so much about money being spent that you are not responsible for. Let the man spend money how he likes, he was trying to win championships so it's justified. But you can have your point of view and I will have mine. Obviously the thread was made in response to you apparently, so that is why I assumed you didn't like him. That's fine, as long as you appreciate the good things he has done for our team then that is respectable. It would be like a Bulls fan trashing Michael Jordan because he retired to play baseball and ignoring all the great things he has done for their team. That would be asinine, but you respect him so that's ok. But as for your point of the debt being worth more than the team, that is obviously an exaggeration. Suns are valued at $600 million, nowhere close to $201 million. At least I am a cow that knows basic math

Will it matter if I did? It will just be ignored, not understood, or cause further comments about me being a socalled hater. :D

As I have been noticing with arguing about guns in America, people convince themselves of something, and nothing will change their minds. :(

I wasn't calling you a name, but by your name. The team was sold for $401 million, and $201 of that was accrued debt. Now try the math again. 201 is one more than 200, no?

I have an interesting story about MJ's short retirement from a Chicago reporter before it happened. The man told me MJ was going to retire for a short period (less than year), because he had gambling issues and wanted to avoid a suspension by the league. I thought the guy was a bit crazy, until MJ announce a retirement, and then later he came back. I'm not saying it all true, but very strange that it happened just like the guy said. :o

So you call me a cow again? Ok pig, that is your official name then  Don't know why you are calling me names that's really immature. You claim you were a fan since the 70's so i assume you are a pretty old man, correct? Well act your age, you first call me a p enis and now a cow. That is not how you debate, have respect dude. Again, I misunderstood as I thought you hated JC and was confused as to why that was justified. But you proved your point so let's move on from that. But there is no place for name-calling that's what children do. As for the Suns value, I saw earlier that it was valued at $600 million currently so that's what I was going by. But either way- 400 >200

And no clue on the MJ bit, I always thought he retired due to his father getting murdered. You could be right though that makes sense as well. MJ was always known for being a heavy gambler

If I was calling you a "cow", I would have spelled it just like that, I didn't. But I did like how you thought it was childish to name call, yet you didn't feel above calling names. I think you are a previously waived poster, and time will tell if you are or are not. So KoW has nothing to do with name calling, but we both knew that.

I looked at the purchase as debt vs non debt value, but to placate you, from now on I'll say more than half the value of the team. But shame on you for arguing when you did not even know how much the team was sold for.
