Bucher: Sarver Selling? Weltman frontrunner for GM?

Whoa.

Jeff Weltman, as has been reported, is the frontrunner to be the Phoenix Suns' next GM, and one source said he was
team president Lon Babby's preference when he first joined the Suns but that owner Robert Sarver was eager to tap the San Antonio Spurs' braintrust and therefore preferred the now-deposed Lance Blanks. The bigger question is, how much longer will Sarver be calling the shots? One source says the increased evaluation of franchises inspired by the Seattle-Sacramento fight over the Kings has Sarver wondering if it's time to cash out.

I hate this 'one source says' BS. Any businessman always will evaluate the worth of their assets with the cost/profit equation. Make no mistake about it, Sarver IS a businessman first, NBA Owner second. The question is, will Sarver's EGO allow him to assimilate back into the low profile of the business world. No doubts he has enjoyed the stage and unfortunately it has been at our expense.

If he did sell, I'd think it would be 99% the team would remain here. Heck, with the sweet deal the arena has, model the ownership equation after the Green Bay Packers and make the franchise a public owned one. The tax payer has already footed the bill substantially with this club.

Anyone know much about this Weltman guy apart from him being the assistant GM of the Bucks?

From images of him on google, he looks like a malnourished mix of Steve Kerr and Robert Sarver.

Hopefully Sarver does sell, but similar to the Sacramento/Seattle situation, I don't see any chance the league allows the Suns to be relocated. The Kings had a chance since they've been moved before, but the Suns have been in Phoenix since 1968 and it would hurt the league to lose a franchise here.

No way the Suns get moved. Then again, there's no way the Sonics could have or should have been moved.

Hopefully Sarver sells and we take that chance.

I don't want to take that chance. However, since Sarver is just a managing partner, he could be just thinking of selling his majority position. :dontknow: My biggest fear was to have the team relocate, and since Seattle has shown a strong desire to get a team back, I just can't be certain that the team will stay regardless of the arena deal.

My ideal situation for Sarver selling the team would be if somehow an investment group of former Suns' players, coaches, etc. got together to buy the team. Imagine an ownership group of guys like Barkley, Majerle, Chambers, Westphal and perhaps even guys like Jerry Colangelo, Al McCoy, etc.

Ultimately, I'd like an owner or owners that actually give a damn about the team, its legacy and the great city of Phoenix... not to mention the incredible Phoenix Suns fans. I feel that Sarver never really cared about any of that. He had money lying around and thought buying an NBA team would be a wise 'investment' (yeah, he's not too bright). While I'm not a huge fan of Mark Cuban, I do respect the fact that he absolutely loves his Dallas Mavericks and the sport of basketball.

The Phoenix Suns and the fans deserve a better owner than Mr. Robert Sarver.

I don't see how one could say he doesn't care. In the recent past we have had huge payrolls. If he didn't care, we'd have small payroll throughout his time here. Oh well, this will just be an emotional argument based on opinions.

I agree that Sarver hasn't made the best decisions and many of the people he has chosen to make basketball decisions have not done a good job. But there is no way to link that with a lack of caring. It's a business, and he is a businessman.

Can't wait for poopman to fling away.

I think Sarver cares a lot. Everybody who leaves(Amare, Nash, Hill, Gentry, etc) the organization says he's extremely passionate about winning. People who have met him say that he would love nothing more than to bring a title to this city.

The problem is that he's just not that basketball-smart. He's made bad decisions. He's spent more money than he should on some things, and then not enough money when he needed to on other things.

I don't doubt his passion. I doubt his...ability. If that makes sense.

If Sarver sells, hopefully its after Seattle gets a team. Don't want to go through that drama.

My personal opinion is that he's passionate about making money. With winning comes money. I don't think he bleeds purple and orange. I don't think he knows the history of this franchise. Most importantly, I think he has a lot of pride. "Cashing out" right now would cause him to look like a failure and would hit his ego hard. He'd love nothing more than to be 'the man' to bring a championship to Phoenix when no one else could. That is, he'd be doing for himself, not the fans in Phoenix.

That's all just my opinion, of course. Maybe I'm completely wrong and maybe he's a great guy. To be honest, I do believe he is a good guy, just not a good basketball guy and certainly not worthy of owning this franchise.

Just when I was about to post the Serge Ibaka erect cucumber pic....

Another day in the life of a Suns fan, just get false hope and get stabbed in the face

He did bring a title (well two) to the city, it was just with the Mercury. :o

Yep. I don't doubt his love for the team NEARLY as much as I doubt his knowledge and style.

Sarver isn't a bad owner, although he isn't a good owner either. He's more middle of the pack when it comes to NBA owners.

1.) Holt
2.) Arison
3.) Buss family

He's certainly better than the Maloofs, who are certainly worse than garbage.

I didn't disagree with that, that's obvious. It's the Sarver being better than half the owners in the league part that confused me

My list would have Sarver below the garbage and one spot above the Magoofs
