@Gambo620: The Phoenix Suns have begun negotiations with former Sun Jeff Hornacek on a contract to be their next head coach.

Some will say that although he has experience as an assistant coach he has no experience as a head coach and that the Suns need to get somebody proven. But he cannot get that experience without getting that first shot at being a head coach. Bulls had interest in 2008 but he wanted to wait for his kids to get older before becoming a coach. Sarver wanted to reconnect with fans so this is a great public releations move. Come on now whats the worst that can happen?

Looking closer and closer. Apparently working on assembling a coaching staff.

His only experience in assistant coaching is the past 2 1/2 years under Corbin, someone who had just as little experience as him. I just don't see how 50 year old Utah Jeff can relate to a bunch of young players, specially when your coaching resume is as minut as his is.

Hell, Thunder Dan has more experience than Horney has.

I'm just saying, screw bringing him in because he is a link to our past, in my eyes there was way better choices out there.

Coaching experience doesn't necessarily make someone relate. He can relate just fine. Dude played in the NBA for 15 years. You're acting like 50 years old is ancient. SMH.

Brooks didn't have any head coach experience either (except for ABA) and is only 2yrs younger than Hornacek, so I have no problem with the hire and I like the choice.

Sure there are better options out there, but we were never going to get Scott, a Van Gundy or any other good coach looking for work. Better to get a guy who will grow with the team as a coach (and has experience unlike Hunter).

I wasnt looking at any of the big name coaches, but rather assistant coaches who have some experience under their belt. Joerger/Budenholzer/Malone/Bickerstaff/ hell, even Shaw would have been better choices in my opinion. AT least they have been battle tested and vetted. They could have all grown with the team just as much as Hornacek.

Even though I'm a Shaw guy I think the age stuff is overblown. Wasn't big on Horny but after reading up on him I was more impressed. There was an article in the Salt Lake paper about the Jazz should fire Corbin so Horny doesn't get away. If his style of play translates to coaching (hard-worker, bb-iq, tough) then that's the attitude I want us to have. Then again Lindsey Hunter was considered those traits as a player too so...

Bottom line I trust McDonough and don't think his first coaching hire is because the guy played for us. I just hope stupid fans don't turn on him when we lose 50+ games next year.

Much like a fighter Hornacek emerges from the tunnel on his way to the podium for his press conference. This song kicks in and everyone knows Hornacek means business.

I like the idea of Hornacek being our next coach, because Hornacek is not Lindsey Hunter.

Normally when you bring in a hot assistant coach to become a head coach, the team he was previously employed with … was good — which the Jazz were not this season. The Jazz had the 8th spot in the playoffs in the West, but they coughed it up during the last week. Look at Brian Shaw. He’s been a part of winning teams since he was in the league as a player and as an assistant coach with the Lakers, and now, Pacers.

Mike Malone — the big name on everyone’s radar — has been a part of a very surprising Golden State Warriors team that shocked the Denver Nuggets last week. Before the Warriors, he coached a successful New Orleans Hornets team and was an assistant to Mike Brown in Cleveland for five seasons where the Cavs went 272-138.

The Sixers need a proven winner, not someone who’s been mediocre. Mediocrity is a curse of this franchise, and Josh Harris, Adam Aron and Tony DiLeo (unless he gets fired) shouldn’t settle for it when it comes to the next head coach.

Same reason why I didn't want him as the next Suns HC.

Yea I would have much rather preferred Joerger, Budenzholzer, Malone or Shaw over him too.

3 years of experience as an assistant doesn't cut it for me. Sure some guys have fared well as HCs in their first gigs without much experience as an assistant but the majority of them fail big time.

I don't see what the problem is, I mean we didn't hire Lindsey Hunter which is the move we would have all despised. Lets see how Hornacek does before we start whining about the hire.
