Trade Timing - FA Period or Trade Deadline
I would like to get some thoughts on what people think is the right time to trade a player. I have read conflicting opinions about it. I have seen it will Steve Nash and now again with Marcin Gortat. Do you trade during the FA period or wait until the trade deadline? I think it should be during the FA period because you have all teams availible to make trades. At the trade deadline, it is most likly just playoff teams. What are you going to get from them? A low draft pick, a bench guy that does not play. Thoughts?

Re: Trade Timing - FA Period or Trade Deadline
Trade ASAP. I see people posting about towards the trade deadline, when teams are in the playoff hunt, but i dont believe that. For one, you are severely limiting us on who to trade with, and teams that are in the play-off race dont like to give up much value or mess with team chemistry by adding in a new piece (even more specifically a new starter). Then, when its that late in the season, all other teams then believe, why should we trade anyone of value for a player that we can just sign outright in a few months as a FA.
We already waited too long as it is. Gortat should have been moved last year when his stats and value were at their highest due to the "Nash Effect". Right now is the best we can due, if we wait too much longer we really will be getting pennies on the dollar or even worse, nothing at all (but capspace).

I'm with Kerrsed on this one. Trading at the deadline makes no sense.

Re: Trade Timing - FA Period or Trade Deadline
We are already limited on who we can trade with. Gortat is coming off an injury, and unless he plays well in the summer with his national team, more than likely we will get lowballed. He will be playing this season for a contract, so holding him until January might get us the best value.
Unless he is already in a deal that we have to wait on, I see no reason to rush.

Pretty much how I feel as well, Gortat's value is only going down the longer we keep him, the amount of teams that would take on Gortat at the trade deadline is more limited than now. Just not a fan of keeping assets as their trade value diminishes.
Unless we plan on resigning him of course, but that would be a confounding move unless we plan to make our #5 pick a career backup center...that actually wouldn't surprise me being a Suns fan and all,

Something sensible honestly, just don't listen to the Suns fans that want a 2014 unprotected first and Anthony Bennett,

Gortat, I would wager, is a preclude to a secondary deal for Andy V or would he be acquired to be a back-up / starter if/when V is injured?

Re: Trade Timing - FA Period or Trade Deadline
I would be happy to nab him as a starter. Granted I haven't really watched much of him post Nash but had really liked gortat in the past. Ideally if like to trade for asik if dwight lands in Houston but I'd be happy with gortat as he really fills a need and I always likes him as a player.
How'd he perform this past season? I'm not really sure what his value is to you guys and throughout the league to be honest.

Re: Trade Timing - FA Period or Trade Deadline
It really depends on the offers. You don't want to give him away. You can't do it too soon either, because teams may become more desperate if they lose out on the free agent centers. It's a risk keeping him going into the season but all it takes is one injury for a team to get desperate. I imagine if we can get something worthwhile in the offseason we will trade him, but no need to trade him for crap just to do it sooner.

I don't think you have to worry about any Suns fan other than JMac wanting Anthony Bennett on the Suns lol.
How about Thompson and Gee since the Suns have wanted him before for Gortat...

I think Bennett could be a stud, but I highly doubt we will ever see him on the Suns.

Re: Trade Timing - FA Period or Trade Deadline
I was just using that example primarily to show that many Suns fans might be overestimating the current value of Gortat, maybe if he had 2-3 years left on his current deal and wasn't coming off an injury-shortened season. Just trying to be realistic since the guy who asked isn't trolling us by offering us a second round 2018 draft pick for Gortat or something,
A deal centered around Thompson to clear the path for Bennett maybe? Maybe add some pieces to even it out a bit. I don't see Cleveland giving up on Gee just yet, but another possibility as well.

Re: Trade Timing - FA Period or Trade Deadline
Thompson makes sense if we give them Scola. Or if we give them Scola and Gortat for Varejao and Thompson. Or even add Dudley and take back Gee.
I don't know if that makes total sense for either team though....ideally we would want at least one pick. We are also already jammed up at power forward.
I think that squad would make them more playoff ready but Varejao can be a stud when healthy...they would just have to realize they can't rely on him and we would have to take him as another asset to later flip since he would be an expiring.
Would they want to give up Varejao and a good young prospect for those guys? Does it totally make sense for us since we really need shooting guards or wings?

Scola definitely has 1st round value to a playoff team. I think we could get a couple picks and Lamb/PJ3 for Scola/Dudley.

Gortat needs to go ASAP. With this year being his last, no one is giving any sensible amount of assets for half a season of Gortat if we're trading him at the deadline.

Unless they are over the cap. You can always re-sign your own free agents...that is the reason he is valuable..a team over the cap would love to be able to re-sign him because they would have no option of getting anyone in free agency.

Re: Trade Timing - FA Period or Trade Deadline
I'm intrigued at the notion of Gortat and Scola for Thompson and Varajeo.
- Scola mentors Bennett, Gortat mentors Zeller until the young guys are ready to contribute
- Varajeo can fill in until Len is ready, Thompson can compete with Morris for the starting PF spot.

I like that idea too. But question is, does Cleveland?

The Suns should wait and see how things pan out in free agency. The Nuggets panicked and got basically nothing for their starting center. TBH, nothing (cap space) >> Arthur + late 2nd.

I dont think so. I think we'd value Thompson more that Gortat and Varejao more than scola so i doubt we'd bite on that. Thompsons value around realgm seems to be pretty low but i know we rate him pretty highly. Hes a lot better than many people realize.
