I like Scola as a player because he hustles and makes plays when you need it. But he's on the hook for 3 more years $3M/yr and he can give you about 14 pts & 7 boards a night. That's pretty great value.

So do the Suns trade him to acquire more assets or do we keep him?

I actually wouldn't mind keeping Scola because I like the idea of Scola mentoring Len much more than Gortat mentoring Len. Scola just seems to me like has a better work ethic and handles himself like a professional and doesn't go complain to the media at any chance he gets. Sure Scola can't teach him anything defensively but he has some tricks up his sleeve on the offensive end. And Scola is one of those guys who was not naturally gifted or anything and had to work hard at his game. He has a decent jump shot, a good post game and he's been a pretty consistent FT shooter throughout his career too.

And he was a good rebounder for his size too (8 boards a game at 6'9).

Plus we can get more for Gortat than Scola

But I wouldn't be upset if we ended up trading Scola either, I just wouldn't want the Suns to give him away. He's a good contributing veteran leader on a good contract. Here are his stats from last season

Luis Scola vs. power forwards playing at least 25 minutes a game:

14th in FG%
13th in rebounds per game
10th in points per game
9th in FT%
9th in turnovers (fewest) per game
7th in assists per game

So not only did Scola raze his counterparts on the Suns, he also was a productive starting power forward relative to his competition across the league.

Something like Scola to SAS for Diaw and their '14 first round pick seems fair. SAS loves Europeans and hard working vets like Scola who don't have any off court issues or anything. Pop would be thrilled to add another flopper to their team as well

Diaw is defensively worth far more than Scola is as a total package.

I'd like to trade him, but I just went through the roster of every team, and I think we might have a harder time trading him then we think (at least trading him for a young player or a pick).

The contender that could probably most use him is the Pacers, but they don't really have anything to trade back that we would want, so it would basically probably have to be a Scola for Hansbrough swap and that would only be worth it if they threw in a 1st round pick. It might be worth it for them since they desperately want to upgrade their bench.

The Clips would make some sense depending on who they sign in free agency, but I think they are going after Landry. If they don't get a backup pf in free agency, and end up re-signing Barnes and losing Bledsoe, we could offer them Brown and Scola for Butler and a pick, but I don't know if it is worth it for them to throw in a pick in that deal...I guess we could also try to throw in Marshall instead of Brown since they would need a backup pg.

Utah could make sense if they lose Milsap and Jefferson, but they'd probably just rather find someone in free agency, and I doubt they'd give up a pick.

The only other deal that might make sense other than your Spurs deal is possibly a straight up swap for Derrick Williams. If they are not that high on him (which they don't seem to be) we could take a flyer on him for a year, and if we didn't like him we could decline the team option on his contract next year.

Scola might be worth keeping for the time being (if the offers are weak) and we could just wait for a possible injury to a team's backup (or starting) pf or wait until next summer. I don't really see a reason to play him though when we should want to develop young guys (or see if they have enough talent to keep beyond next summer).

Actually another possibility I just thought of is if Carl Landry goes to the Clips, we could offer him to GS for Brandon Rush. I don't know if they'd do that but they did fine without him last year and they would have struggled without Landry since Bogut and Lee are so injury prone, so they need a legit backup big. This would probably be about the best case scenario for us.

It's not as imperative to move Scola as it is to move Gortat. Scola has more time on his contract but we should still be looking at moving him if the right deal comes along. I think that's true for everyone on the roster, actually.

Scola should have some pretty good value on the market, really nice contract and still a pretty good player. However, I agree that I don't want the Suns to trade him just for the sake of making a trade. Its not like Gortat where he is gone after this season, we still got time to get a good deal for Scola.

Now with that said, watch Scola miss the entire season with the Suns luck,

Scola has only two years left on his contract, both years are $4+ million. Only trade him for something good or decent.

I posted that up above. I really like Rush, so I'd do it, but the problem is he is another expiring so we could just lose him again next summer? I think he's a pretty solid player at a good price though.

I'm reposting some of my comments from another thread.

One of the problems with our starting unit last year was Dudley and Scola playing at the same time. They were too slow to rotate properly on defense. That problem goes away with Dudley being traded.

Scola still has the best post game of anyone on the Suns. When the opportunity to run is not available then you need to have a half court game. He also provides a great pick-n-pop opportunity for Dragic/Bledsoe. Might be worth keeping him around to help mentor Len too.
