Semi OT: For those who live in AZ, what do you think...

Post#1 » by E-Buck » Wed Jul 17, 2013 10:24 pm

What do you think will happen, when the Suns finally win an NBA championship?

For those who live in Arizona, how crazy do you expect the city of Phoenix to be when the Suns finally win? Imagine the Suns just one, and you're somewhere on Jefferson St. lol

I know for a fact I'm gonna be with a bunch of Suns fans, drunk out of my mind, and wearing my favorite Archie Goodwin jersey. Everything else, I cannot be held accountable for

I will be poppin' bottles of prune juice in my retirement home, right after a nurse changes my diaper from me sh*tting myself in excitement. Hopefully one of my great grandkids will stop by in his flying car to make sure i didnt die of a heart attack.

Look no further then the 1993 celebration. The parade we had after the finals.. It was awesome. I have vivid memories of that. Thats when you couldnt go 10 feet without bumping into a sign of the suns or a sign with barkley on it.

It will make the 2001 D-Backs celebration look like a wine-tasting gathering.

The amount of debauchery that will take place will be unprecedented, it will make my own experiences with Vegas bachelor parties, Halloween frat parties, and Mexico Spring Breaks look tame in comparison.

I don't care if I'm in my 80s when it happens,

I don't live in Phx right now, but was in Scottsdale when UofA won the national championship in basketball, and it was wild....people were riding down the streets in downtown Scottdale yelling....it was super packed and it was late on a Monday night.

Also, when the D-Backs won the world series, I was at a sports bar in Scottsdale, and the place went ballistic.

And the Suns are FAR MORE popular than either of those teams (UA basketball has a huge following, but strictly in the Phx area, the Suns are far bigger because there is little to no split of fan loyalty).

The town would go CRAZY. I wasn't there for when the Cards made the super bowl, but I don't think that would have even been close to the Suns winning a championship. I think we may be the only city that has a pro basketball and football team where the town is more behind basketball than football (though that probably shifted a little bit when the Cards made the Super Bowl...but of course finally when the Suns got bad, the Cards did too). Boston may have a bigger basketball following than football...they definitely did prior to 2001, but between then and 2007 it probably shifted a bit.

That's one thing for me...grew up in AZ, but I'm a Packers fan. However, I will celebrate if the Cardinals win just for my hometown support.

If Packers win, I'm going ape **** insane
If the Suns win, I'm going ape **** insane
If the DBacks win, I'm going just ape ****
If the Coyotes win, I'm doing acid, because it'll be perfect for a hallucination

Unfortunately phx is no longer the "suns" as the biggest draw in the city. Phx has clearly become the cardinals city. I love me some cardinals but still miss the 90s when phx was the suns!

Cardinals winning a championship would be insane but suns would be clearly almost as crazy celebration. Bottomline the NFL rules the united states. Suns will always be the closest to my heart(though im a bigger cardinals fan right now)because they were the only professional team in az when i was growing up.

It's a bandwagon town. The Cards have momentum right now but if all teams are at their best the Suns are #1. The D'Backs have been pretty good but baseball season is in the heart of summer so it's hard for people to get excited.

The Cardinals are so bad though. Such an awful team. I think anyone on this forum could have started at QB for them for the past 4 years. They had that one good 2008 season and they were on the brink of a championship (just like the Suns had their 2010 season when we were close to getting a title) and other than the Cards have been pretty awful for the past 10-15 years or more.

I think all the cards need is a good QB...My favorite QB in the league is Falcco...I think he can make any team better and if he was on the cardinals with Fitz would be amazing. Im surprised Fitz signed such a long deal with us given he had no QB to play with.

I've been saying the Cardinals will be good this coming season. How good? Hard to say when you play in the same division as the 49ers, Seahawks, and Rams, who improved tremendously through the draft, as did the Cardinals. Now with a nice secondary combo of TM/PP and the addition of Okafor, Minter, and Dansby to the already strong front 7, I can say the Cards will be fun to watch. Palmer could be good as well, although I was hoping the Cards would try to get Matt Flynn instead.

Im cautiously optimistic with the cards right now. New system, new coach, new qb. But i love bruce arians attitude. He seems to have the players respect already. Thats so important.

Im really interested to see how tyrann mathieu does. Its nice to see carlos dansby back. My heart says they surprise the nfl and win 11 games. My head tells me they are an 8-8 team. Hopefully my heart is right.

Btw larry fitzgerald is easily the most popluar athlete in arizona by a wide margin!!!

Yeah, I remember when the Dbacks won it was pretty crazy, that night the traffic for like 6 miles out from the stadium was stopped and people were running around outside of their cars going nuts. But the Suns following is so much larger and I think people are far more emotionally invested in them.

Its pretty clear that the Cardinals have overtaken the Suns as the "main" sports team in the state. The main thing holding back the Cardinals were playing in the NFC East, the Bidwells, and the craptastic Sun Devil Stadium.

Now the team is actually improving and trying to be competitive (remember a 5-win season in the 90s was expected, now its a disappointment, big culture change), Bill Bidwell isn't in control much anymore, and they have a pretty nice stadium.

Also can't state strong enough how much changing divisions has helped the team. No longer having to deal with the legions of Cowboys, Giants, Eagles, and Redskins fans is huge as all of those teams have pretty large national followings. For the most part, only the 49ers in the NFC West have enjoyed a national presence. The Cardinals finally enjoy a home field advantage which I don't think had happened before being realigned into the NFC West.

The Suns will regain their popularity once they get good again, but I think the Cardinals will be the main sports team to follow in Arizona for the foreseeable future.

That's not certainly true. If anything, the Diamondbacks are the most popular team in AZ, as they are the most talked about on our radio stations, have the most merchandise in multiple stores, sell the most merchandise all around (I see more Dbacks shirts, hats, jackets, car stickers, flags, lanyards, etc)

However, when talking emotional support, no AZ team comes close to the Suns. Obviously the most successful will gain the most support, but talking if all four major teams were to win, the Suns would get the most support, and Phoenix will be in flames lol. Suns have unbelievable amount of support from Arizona residents. Many people I know moved here that stuck with all their original teams, but picked up on the Suns. Nobody hates the Suns here except Lakers fans anyway, and everybody else hates the Lakers lmao.

Well, I don't live in AZ anymore, but I would personally run through the streets screaming like a maniac in whatever city I was in at the time.

Also, Phoenix is a Suns town. The Cardinals are getting better and a generating some buzz, and the D-Backs are the only AZ franchise to win a championship in any sport, so there is still a lot of interest there. But when the Suns are winning and the pundits and fans think we have a chance to win things, it's a Suns town.

Return to Phoenix Suns
