“I think there’s a lot that can be done to help him and I think one is, and this is not from the organization or anything, but it’s just for the people who are around him and love him most, is just don’t give up on him, try to help him as much as possible, build him up because he’s a star,” Butler told NBA.com during a phone interview from his new home in Phoenix. “He’s a guy that had an unbelievable collegiate career, who came into the NBA as a top-two pick, so the talent is there, it hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s like clay, it just needs to be molded right. Somebody needs to be around him, talking to him and telling him the right things and building him up and keeping nothing but positive energy around him and moving him forward instead of pulling him back.”
Butler, a raging success story born out of an unsavory childhood, arrested numerous times before he turned 15, said if Beasley remains with the team, and if the 6-foot-10, 235-pounder is willing, he will stick by the kid’s side, mentor him, attempt to reach him. At this point, save him from himself.
“I would stay in his ear, I would definitely stay in his ear,” Butler said. “I would continue to motivate him and I would challenge him night-in and night-out, in practice, just whatever I can do to make him better I would do as a human being, and obviously as a basketball player because I think he has tremendous upside still. He’s just 24 years old.”

Maybe this is why we haven't really heard anything from the Suns about cutting Beasley. Perhaps Butler could get through to him?
Could be worth the try. If Beasley still sucks then cut him next summer and we only have to pay him the $3 since his contract is not completely guaranteed for next season.
No better person to mentor him than Butler considering the hardship that Butler has gone through in his life...

There is little to no downside in keeping Measley on the team this yr. If you have a vet like Butler who is willing to take him under his wing, then you do it. All of you who champion the 'get something for GORTAT before he walks' argument ought to realize the same principle applies to SuperFool. Cutting him yields nothing. Allowing him to play/practice his way onto the court at least has the potential to establish some value for what is essentially a plugged nickel right now.

I cant tell you how much I like what I have heard from Butler and his actions since getting traded here!!! All of the praise to Bledso.... stepping up and accepting a leadership role in the vaccume that was never filled when Steve and Grant left..... the quote "from his new home"... the man is actually establishing roots here in the state!! Butler seems to be a real pro, and we could use a few on our roster.

Yea I like him a lot too. Originally I wanted us to trade Butler at the deadline but now I'm not opposed to keeping him and probably even resigning him at the end of the season.
I want all our future young players to learn from guys like Butler.

yes.... kudos to Caron. Perhaps he is eying a front office job. I'll bet he has enjoyed meeting the 'healers' as well.

Yea I agree.
Only concern for some is that Beasley is a "cancerous" player and that may hurt the development of Goodwin, Len and Bledsoe.
I don't really agree with that notion though.

Nor do I.
Beas is a pretty chill guy who works hard. He comes off as a more self-inflicting guy than one who's going to hurt others. I'm still rooting for him, because deep down I know there's nothing essentially bad about him, he's just a bit dumb and hasn't really filled out.

Funny, I just mentioned this as a possibility in the trade thread a few days ago. Good for Caron. Maybe McD had this in mind the whole time.
Could be another reason why the team is waiting to act.

I think thats great news. I mean under Butler mentorship he can improve a lot, and most important stop doing all those crazy things.

This is good, now Beasley has a shoulder to cry on when the team waives him.

He can always go hang with his best buddy in the world Lance Blanks. Maybe they can both go and visit Lindsay Hunter and reminisce how they collectively nearly destroyed the Phoenix Suns.

Is it weird that I originally thought the word "mentor" was "murder" in the title,

If only. People wishing Beas was expiring would get their wish

At first I was a bit unsure how Butler would be once joining the team, whether he wouldn't want to stick around and make a fuss about having to be a part of where the team is. But I do have to say I'm pleased with what he has been saying, and trying to mentor Beasley is encouraging. I mean, it might not actually result in anything, but at this point it's worth a shot.

Well, guys I think, that with Beasley that's all she wrote. The guy is 24 years old, and I just don't see him changing. Even biologycly I think that his brain synapses have been pretty much set. You can still change later on in life, but you need very strong motivation to do so.
I don't even think that marihuana is a problem. The problem is, if you have a guy who didn't "think" the game for the last 10 years or so, dont expect him to change all of the sudden. See all the stupid decisions last year. And how many mentors has he had until now? I appreciate Butler reaching out, but I don't think it's going to work. How many times has he failed, and the time is running out.
I think you just have to be realistic about these things and just write him of as an failed experiment.

Mentoring Michael Beasley?
Oofta. Butler's really going to earn that $8 million this year.

At first I was worried about Beasley being around the younger guys and maybe being a bad influence on them, but then again, it sure seems that Goodwin and Bleadsoe have their **** together. Im' not so sure they would be easily corrupted.
Additionally, seeing Beasley may give them motivation NOT TO **** UP. Beasley - example of what happens when you smoke weed, be lazy, and half ass it.
I just don't want Beasley taking time away from our young players. I'd almost be in favor of sending him to the D-League to make a point and only bring him back when his head is right. If that is even possible. LOL,
