Bucks Looking For A Butler. Bye Bye Caron!!

Post#1 » by Kerrsed » Thu Aug 29, 2013 2:38 am

GERY WOELFEL: Butler back in town? Sources indicate Bucks, Suns working on a deal

Two-time NBA All-Star and Racine native Caron Butler is not only preparing for life after basketball, he’s also working to make a difference in Racine.

Caron Butler has periodically dreamed about some day playing for the Milwaukee Bucks.

That’s certainly understandable, considering Butler was born and raised in Racine and followed the fortunes of the Bucks ever since he was a child.

Now, 33 years old and having played 11 years in the National Basketball Association, Butler’s dream may finally come true.

According to multiple sources, the Bucks and Phoenix Suns are seriously engaged in trade negotiations that would bring Butler to the Bucks.

Although exact details of the potential trade aren’t known, Butler, the former Park High School standout, would be the central figure in the deal that could be culminated as soon as today.

Butler will be paid nearly $8 million next season, so the Bucks would likely have to give the Suns some sort of combination involving players and draft picks. It is believed the Bucks wouldn’t surrender any of their frontline players.

Butler, a two-time NBA All-Star, started for the Los Angeles Clippers the last two seasons. But the Clippers dealt Butler to the Suns in early July as part of a three-team trade that, interestingly, involved the Bucks.

In that transaction, Butler and Eric Bledsoe were moved to the Suns, while J.J. Redick and Jared Dudley were sent to the Clippers. The Bucks received a pair of second-round draft choices: one from the Suns and another from the Clippers.

But many NBA observers expected Butler’s time in the Valley of the Sun to be short-lived. After all, the Suns are in a full-fledged rebuilding mode and are attempting to stockpile draft picks and young players for the future.

The Bucks, meanwhile, are committed to trying to make the playoffs for the second straight season. After a flurry of offseason trades and free-agent signings, they appear set at every position except small forward, which is where Butler plays.

Carlos Delfino, whom the Bucks signed as a free-agent in July, had been the projected starting small forward. But Delfino is still recovering from surgery for a fractured bone in his right foot.

There are whispers that Delfino will miss the entire preseason and even a portion of the regular season.

The Bucks also have two other young small forwards on their roster: Khris Middleton, whom they recently acquired in a trade with Detroit, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, whom they selected in the first round of the June draft.

While the Bucks are excited about the futures of Antetokounmpo and Middleton, neither player is close to being ready to play major minutes next season.

Butler, on the other hand, is a proven veteran who has been a starter his entire pro career. The 6-foot-7 Butler started 78 of a possible 82 games for the Clippers last season. He averaged 10.2 points, 2.9 rebounds and 24.1 minutes on a well-balanced scoring team that featured All-Stars Chris Paul and Blake Griffin.

Butler also has extensive playoff experience, something that would undoubtedly benefit a relatively-young Bucks team.

Butler has competed in postseason competition during six seasons, having started 47 games.

While Butler would clearly help the Bucks on the floor, he would also help change the culture of a locker room that was riddled with internal strife last season.

Butler is regarded in NBA circles as a leader and consummate team player who has always placed team goals ahead of his own.

Ehh not much on the Bucks bench that would help the rebuild. I suppose Picks and an Expiring will have to do.

I agree. Only players i would be interested in are Henson/Middleton/Sanders/Greek Scrabble. I KNOW they will not part with Sanders and believe that Henson might be in that category as well. The best thing is that they are $7.5M UNDER THE CAP. That means that a Butler for Henson/Draft picks trade could be financially possible.

They're not giving up Henson.

It'll probs be Udoh + a pick.

Stein confirms as well: https://twitter.com/ESPNSteinLine/statu ... 9845786624

Plus Butler has this to say:

@realtuffjuice: Much respect for the organization of the Phx Suns#staytuned

Probably Henson.

He wasnt referencing us getting Sanders, it was that Sanders wasn't going to sign a reasonable extension if HENSON stayed.

Like that McD is not hesitating to move veterans when opportunities present themselves.

Also, thumbs up to Caron Butler, who never played a game but I respect the way he handled what had the be a depressing trade to a rebuilding team.

Eh I'm not a big fan of trading Butler already. We have such a young roster, I would have liked his leadership and veteran presence in the locker room at least til the deadline.

If we do trade him, we better get something good rather a super protected first round pick and some expiring scrub.

Hi guys,

Will be some combination of Udoh, Kravstov, Ish Smith and (hopefully not) one of our many 2nds. Udoh is a nice, young defensive big who can definitely be a good rotation player in this league. Still on his rookie contract after being a lotto pick and will sign a reasonable deal as he wont draw a lot of attention in free agency. Not a great rebounder or finisher but defensively is very solid and is a hard worker.

My question is, if we are giving up a young big man, fairly recent lotto pick on his rookie deal for a 33 year old owed $8 million on a rebuilding team who wouldn't have too much interest in keeping him around, why would the Bucks be giving up the picks? Do Phoenix value him higher than i'm thinking?

Udoh? Another PF? Ive always liked Udoh as well
Liking the addition of more picks though!

The fact that the Suns are adding Udoh, another PF, tells me that Frye didnt make the cut, which would also explain him delaying the news. Sad, but he has to do what is best for his family.

Loving thr Udoh add though. Hes a tough defender, and a shotblocker. Not bad considering he's expiring.

In McD we trust.

I think the trade exception and a 2nd rounder make the most sense. I can't see us going after Henson...another big. If so, maybe we learned Frye can't play anymore?

Funny that he would end up in Milwaukee, seeing as they were part of the 3 way trade when we got him to begin with.

Their GM is an odd dude, seems like he should have worked this deal with the Clippers.

I'm not sure if Baddy Chuck is being misquoted there but I know blazza is just joking. Definitely wont be Henson, Bucks love him and he and Sanders are good friends already and being touted as the future frontcourt all Summer. Can bet my life Sanders / Henson etc wont be in this deal.

Not that I expect us to get Henson. But we hardly have a glut of big men worth caring about. If McD had a chance to get a PF he liked for the future I have no doubt he would pull the trigger. Morris/Morris/Frye... I dont any of these guys will be on the roster two years from now.
