Shawn Marion.

He was under rated...
And was a more unique player, will be remembered as one of the best rebounding SF ever.
21/11 season was special.

Marion all day every day. I don't really feel like making a case though. I'll let someone else do it.

I feel like both with be remembered with a cloud over their head.
Amare: Our training staff (who we all should have listened to) felt that Amare had between two and four more good seasons before he would fall apart. He left for NYC for the money, and pretty much fell apart. Had he stayed here with our staff, he may have given us more than two seasons and possibly a championship

Marion: he was adamant that he was a MAX player worth a MAX extension with the suns. This led to his trade to the Heat for Shaq. After that he NEVER lived up to his own hype. Had he accepted his role he could have lead us to our possible championship.

Both of those players during their prime will be remembered as two of the greatest at their respective positions. But ultimately, both of their egos got in the way of the suns and their championship dreams.

08-09, 09-10, and 10-11 were out windows. that window pretty much closed because of those two.

If i had to chose between the two Marion got me excited for Suns basketball again, and Amare carried this team during his time here. Marion was a beast during his prime. He was my favorite player up until his last couple seasons here. But i'll be the first to say that both of them have a little black spot tainting their time here.

Amare was capable of carrying the team on his back if he had to which he showed in NY but Marion could never do that since he scored mainly off garbage points, fast breaks and open threes.
I choose Amare and he never really complained about the Suns like Marion did. NY just offered him a bigger contract which he would have been foolish to turn down.

Marion was great in Phx but Amare is one of my favorite Suns ever, both (alongside Nash) made the Suns the most entertaining team in the NBA back in the day.

Amare for me if I have to choose one of them.

Exactly the same for me.

It kind of contradicts my thoughts, but I wish Marion didn't have such an ego and he actually retired a Sun...Amare always seemed destined to leave for a bigger market.

It's a shame Amare's legacy is being tainted by how he's playing now with the injuries etc - I would take Prime Amare over ANY PF in the last 15yrs apart from Dirk/Duncan/Garnett.

So his peak was much higher in my eyes than guys like Bosh, Griffin (has he peaked?), Boozer, Jefferson, Aldridge, Brand, Horford and only Love might get there eventually.

Also the best finisher inside that I've ever seen - just going through players and dunking on grown ass men.

Sledgehammer dunk extraordinaire and one of the most exciting players I've EVER seen.

First of all, great post!

Amare is hands down one of my favorite players ever. Because of him, I am a Suns fan. Of course he had that white guy dishin to him each play :)

Marion was cool but not a player who can put a team on his back. Amare was the man. Give him the ball and grab a bag of popcorn.

Never like playing the what if game but if Amare never got hurt, he'll be the best PF EVER.

With most of us picking Amare, does that mean he would be over Marion if inducted in the Ring Of Honor? I wouldn't want either.

Amare on Tolliver was insane.
Amare's put back at Utah was underrated.
Amare killed Stackhouse twice in one game in 05 playoffs.
Amare murdered Foyle twice at Golden State.
Amare was just amazing.

Amare was all talent, Marion was talent plus effort.

I respect those who put in effort and hustle above those who just coast on their talent, so I guess I have to go with Marion. 21/11 and great D was amazeballs, even though it might not have been as flashy. Substance over style.

One of the dunks over Foyle is one of the 'forgotten' dunks - hard to find good video of it, I'm sure it was a two handed crush and Foyle went flying...
Amare on RJefferson in SA

I LOVE the Marion breakaway on Al Harrington too

It's tough to really care about either because they both wanted to leave, but if I had to chose on ability and what they did for the Suns, I would have to choose Marion.

Marion was the more complete player. We could have him guard 1-5 if needed, and without any real plays run for him (besides that Diaw alley-oop), he found ways to score. He could rebound just as well as Amare, and Marion had the best second jump I have ever seen.

Marion had the most girly looking shot form, so Amare gets the nod there, and pretty much most of all the other offensive side, but often he would give up as many points on the defensive side as he gave us. However, Marion was usually put on the other team's best player.

So overall, Marion did the most for us on both ends of the floor.

This is tough for me, but I think Marion by a hair for legacy, but I liked Amare a tad better. I feel like I liked Amare more than most though, but then in this thread, it looks like he was pretty well liked.

I don't think either wanted to leave, but Marion was kind of a baby and wanted the max. Amare just wanted to make sure he didn't lose out on money if he got injured (and you can't blame him or the Suns for what happened).

Amare was the best finisher I have ever watched all the time. There may be others out there, but not any that I watched on a regular basis. While he did have his weaknesses, his strength was huge, and pretty important to what we did as a team (some may argue we did just as good when he was out, but we were not really nearly as dominant, and very nearly lost in the first and second rounds of the playoffs, and luckily avoided Spurs and Mavs in the first two rounds due to the old playoff matchup rules even though they were likely the two best teams in the west that year).

Marion was extremely solid. I'm a big fan of both. Their strengths really complemented each other. Marion was a great rebounder and defender, while Amare was unstoppable on offense.

I like them both. It kinda feels like a wash, but I'm leaning towards Amar'e. He had a bigger impact on the game, heck, Amar'e was a strong MVP candidate a few years ago.

Great topic idea...

I actually loved both of them as Suns. Marion became kind of a diva towards the end and Amar'e had his injury issues then jumped for a bigger contract, but I never let that tarnish what they gave to the Suns organization.

I would have to lean towards Marion here, because what he contributed over the years was amazing. Prime Marion was an incredibly unique and versatile player. I still have a media day photo of Marion, Marbury, and Penny Hardaway hung up.

Amar'e in his prime was a complete monster and we've hardly ever seen physical explosiveness like that in any sport. Some of his posterization dunks were breath takers, and then he had some awesome plays like the 3-pointer to send us into OT in the playoff games etc, so he's a close second for me.

But Marion, man, I used to stand out in the driveway and try to make shots and free throws with his from-the-chest form. I watched any interview he gave, because he was such a character. I guess he was with the Suns a little earlier so I got attached to him first.

These are 2 guys who I will always appreciate for what they contributed to our franchise, and it sucked to see how far and fast they fell off after leaving the Suns.

Legacy= STAT...all those crazy flushes and memories of my friends and I shouting and rising up from the couches hitting each other after he facialized someone.

Impact= Marion...Double-double machine. Best on the ball defender. Solid scorer. Helped the team remain a top 5 team for many seasons with his consistent all around play....Except the playoffs...wawawawaaa....
