Fun with analytics my way

Post#1 » by NBA Fiend » Sun Jan 5, 2014 8:27 pm

From looking at Thads stats the main thing stoping him from being one of the top scorers in the leauge is his FTA's. Bear with me as I HAVE FUN WITH NUMBERS.
He has shot 51% from the field for his 7 year career. This year 7.5/14.8 for 51% from 2 and 1.0/2.4 for 41% from 3.
His points per game 18.6. Hornacek will now allow him to take 6 more shots per game
+ 3 points on 1.0/2.4 on 3 point shooting (his % may skyrocket because of all the delicious looks)
+3.6 points on 50% shooting 1.8/3.6
+3.7 points on free throws. He will now be conditioned by Hornacek to average 8 FTA's a game.
His average points per game now stands at
28.9 ppp
He will now challange Durant for the scoring title next year.
McD seems to be real interested in Thad and maybe he has deduced what I have.
A golden statue of McD will be commissioned by Sarver and all will be right in this world once again.
I do get a kick out of myself, I do.
But IF Thad could consistently get to the line with the way the Suns run he could have a major explosion.

Hmm...

I definitely think he'd thrive within our system. He'd be a very critical piece in some superb offensive units. Something like...

Dragic
Bledsoe
Tucker
Thad
Frye

...would be ridiculous on offense and good enough defensively to make us very, very dangerous.

Thad would get his, but within the flow of the offense. When he has a mismatch, he'd go off, but that wouldn't happen every night.

You do realize that if Hornacek allowed Young to take 6 more shots per game, he would be taking as many shots as mid-2000s T-Mac, Kobe and LeBron, right?

Yes, but he would average 6.6 points more points per game and with his new found ability to draw fouls he would be fighting to be the leauge leader in scoring. Kobe for his career is at .483% from 2 and .335% from 3. McGrady was at .461% from 2 and .338 from 3. Young is at .527% from 2 over the course of 7 Years and .345% from 3. That is better than Kobe and McGrady shot all their years in the leauge. Thad is stastically better than Kobe and McGrady ever were. He just needs to take more punishment inside so he can get to the line. So it goes to reason that Thad deserves to shoot as much as he wants. In fact he should shoot until ice is required for his elbow.

I will take it even further if you look at Jordans season from 92-93 you will cleary see that that Thad is shooting better than Jordan did the year the Bulls beat the Suns in the finals. According to this data Thad may in fact be coming up on a 5 year Jordan-esque run. Once again I do enjoy the way I amuse myself. Seriously Markieff compares quite well with Thad. Markief has shown what he can do when he plays to his strengths. The question is how much can Markieff improve and would the Suns be better with the Morri or Thad in the long run. If Thad is traded here he can opt out after next year and who knows what kind of money he will want. I am just enjoying the season and although I know Thad would do well here I do not have the foresight McD has and at this point it looks like he can do no wrong. So I will continue to enjoy the Suns much like I did in the eighties before I knew what tanking was and I just wanted the team to win for the sake of winning. This season just reminds me of the Cotton era pre Barkley. And it looks like Hornacek will be here as longs as he wants.

I guess you don't realize that when you take MORE shots, your percentages usually go down? I mean it's possible with two pgs he could get more easier shots, but Phx is built on passing and finding the open guy. If he shoots that much he would get double teamed eventually leaving other guys open who should then get the ball.

Philly does play a much faster pace and he is the best vet of only a couple of vets on the entire team, so chances are he is shooting much more now than he would on a well balanced team.

I know and having MCW to run with helps. As I said in my above post Markieff and Thad are comparble on a per 36 basis. Thad is having a great stretch right now. Markieff has been a pleasent suprise for me this year and the Morri are both locked ito nice contracts for the next 2.5 seasons. The great thing is the Suns actually have a coach who can coach and is well liked by the players. Theres an article on BSOTS about the importence of Markieff to the Suns. I can get a bit sarcastic at times but I am not dellusional. I know Thad is not the savior. But he would help at the right price.

What makes you think he's interested in Thad?

Not a fan of the analytics but I appreciate the enthusiasm! Also would love Young here...
