The Suns Flaws Adressed

Post#1 » by asudevil » Thu Mar 13, 2014 6:40 pm

This team has overachieved this entire season, we all know that. We all thought and hoped they would overachieve themselves into the playoffs, but they arent. Now a whole bunch of us are going with "the sky is falling" route, which is fine.

We've all known the suns flaws throughout the season
a.) Streaky shooting
b.) Poor low post presence
c.) Reliance on the 3pt shot

you could check almost any box score and find each of those 3 "flaws" as the main contributor to our teams wins and losses.

Cleveland - L - 10/36 (27%) on 3s
Clippers - L - Griffin 37pts and Jordan 17 boards
Warriors - L - Lee goes for 26/9 shooting 11/18 (61%)
Thunder - W - Green goes for 41
Clippers - L - 7/19 (37%) on 3s and nobody scores more than 18pts
Hawks - W - Green goes for 33 and we go 15/24 (61%) on 3s
Pelicans - W - Dragic goes for 40 and we go 10/23 (44%) on 3s
Jazz - L - 6/19 (32%) on 3s and nobody scores more than 17pts
Wolves - L - Love goes for 33/13/9
Rockets - L - Howard goes for 25/9 shooting 10/12 (84%)
Spurs - W - Morris/Ish combine for 35pt shooting 15/19 (79%)
Celtics - W - Nobody scores more than 18 and we EEK out a win against a 19/36 team
Nuggets - W - Green goes for 36
Heat - L - Close game and we shoot 12/28 (42%) on 3s but Bosh goes for 21/9 shooting 8/11 (72%)
Warriors - W - Dragic/Green combine for 59 and we shoot 11/21 (52%) from 3s

It seems to me that we MUST have one of two things happen for us to win:
a.) Green/Dragic have to go for 30+
b.) We have to be on a hot streak from the 3pt line

If either Green or Dragic score 30+ or we can shoot over 40% from the 3, then we'll probably win. If not:

we CANNOT let:
the opposing big men dominate

If a team has a good big man he will generally dominate: he'll go for 20/10 and shoot over 60% from the field.

Nice thread. I still have a hope for a playoff spot.

Rebounding is our biggest flaw.

Replace Frye with Kevin Love and we fix issue b) and get less dependent on issue a). Point c) is a characteristic of the team that I particularly like, so don“t see it as an issue.

I see your reliance on the 3 pt shot as a good thing. A good shooting run in the playoffs could lead to a 2nd round spot.

No no no No. suns should not be the playoffs. your looking at a 1st round sweep or less. young team with potential so they should tank and try for a loterry. suns r simply not a good enough team yet to make any noise. they too young

i think amare should comeback as a vet or assistant coach. hes not doing much in the city, but was a beast long ago here

My favorite philosophy. If you're not labeled as a contender, don't even bother for playoffs, just tank.

Yup. If you can't win everything, take your ball and go home. Have them wake you up in time for the draft because we all know that teams that draft high in the lottery become instant champions.

3pt shooting is fun. and when we are shooting well its a very exciting team. the problem is that when they dont shoot well they lose to good teams, and severely struggle against bad teams.

the other problem is they have NOTHING to fall back on. their low post game is poor, and they rely too much on Green/Dragic to go off.

Boston - W - Shoot 5/26 (19%) from 3 and again struggle to win
Raptors - W - big win and shoot 11/23 (48%) and Green goes for 28
Nets - L - 6/22 (27%) and nobody scores more than 18
Magic - W - 6/13 (46%)
Piston - W - 8/23 (32%) and Bledsoe goes for 15 of his 23 in 4th
