Hornacek 2nd in NBA Coach of the Year

Argh so close!! Well done though, an amazing season for a rookie head coach.

He did an amazing job in turning around both the mindset and the style of what was basically a 'stumbling', directionless team.

Return us to the promised land Jeff and congrats to Pop...that guy...I hate how the Spurs have killed us, but goddamn that guy can COACH.

I really feel he's a Suns lifer and could be the type of stability we need to recruit stars as they can see previously discarded or overlooked players were given confidence and defined roles by him and he played them to their strengths, rather than make them things they aren't.

Len could have played more, sure, as could Goodwin. But then this would have been a frustrating season that could easily have been de-railed if we'd gotten in a hole, and players like Green and the Morri may have been moved for picks had we not started strong.

In Hornacek we trust. Well I do at least :D

Popovich couldn't lose with the kind of season they had.

If I had Tim Duncan every year I coached, I would look brilliant too! All it took was one shady tank year from the spurs.

Hornacek did a fantastic job, but I would've voted for Pop also.

I feel vindicated for wanting Hornacek for a coach three years ago, and putting that in numerous posts. Unfortunately, I had him listed as an assistant. :D

Nice for Jeff to be in the list right behind Pops, although I'm still confused how people think having the fourth worst record and drafting the number one pick is shady, unless they are implying that Stern rigged the draft to give his friend Holt the number one pick. :D

Well deserved for Hornacek, I don't think any other coach woulda been able to have us play as well (and fun) as he did.

Popovitch also did great again, as did Thibs, so the top 3 is some serious quality.

Good to see Kidd finish top 10 in his rookie coaching year, floor general abilities translating over to coaching ability very well

One game separated Hornacek from the playoffs and coach of the year.

Stupid.

Some impressive objectivity from Coro.

I think it's ridiculous. There was a huge shift at the end in the media to vote for Popovich. I think if coaches had voted for it, it probably would have been Hornacek.

I think some are rewarding Pop because of the brutal way they lost the finals last year and that they still came back strong.

I just don't see how a team that goes to the NBA finals and loses in 7 games, having the best record the subsequent year is more impressive than taking a team projected by Vegas and analysts to win less than 20 games, to 48 wins. What Horny did with players who had never had much NBA success was miraculous.

Popovich is a great coach and could win every year I suppose, but they were already a great team who remained great. They added at least one key player in Marco Bellinelli who played well in the playoffs last year to the team, and had a very deep bench, allowing them to play most of their roster limited minutes. Other teams didn't have that luxury. Some credit Pop for this but you have to play people more minutes if you only have so many players to work with.

Anyway, I think Hornacek was much more impressive, and it's a shame, because how could he be even MORE impressive in the future? We may take a big step forward in the future, but probably not as big of a step as we did this year. But then again, I don't think Pop took much of a step forward this year and he won it, so maybe that doesn't matter.

Excellent post, bwgood77! I agree with you totally.

But I just think that's the destiny for the suns this year, obviously:
- Dragic one step from being an all star
- The Suns one step from making the play offs
- Horny one step from being a COY

I have just the feeling it goes on like that:
- Goran (and Markieff and Green) just one step behind the MIP
- Markieff just behind the 6th man
etc. etc.

But nevertheless - the suns go on...

Hornacek actually had more total votes than Pop. He had 103 votes to Pop's 98. The problem is that Pop really dominated the 1st place votes. Close race (like everything the Suns do).

Here's to next year.

How long so you guys realistically think hornacek will last in the valley?
5 or so years?

I could see him being here for a very long time.

Check out the poll results in this article posted less than three weeks before the end of the season.

I could honestly see Hornacek having a Jerry Sloan type coaching career, he could coach here for a very long time. He's a great teacher and it looks like the players and the organization like him being here. He just seems like the kind of guy that can't do any wrong and a front office will know he's never going to quit on his team.

I could see that but history shows AZ sports role like that.
Kirk Gibson is basically identical to hornacek. But now his club is 5-17 and he might be on his way out.
Mike Dantoni brought a terrible suns roster into a elite club in 1 year,Eventually it came to a end.
Bruce Arians has the cardinals on the right path as well but for how long?

Dave Tippett yotes coach might of saved the team by getting them to one series away from Stanley cup .
But with a epic collapse he may be on hot seat.

Your rookie season seems to be the best for AZ sports.
I'm a fan of horncek but I've been a fan of others as well across the valley and past suns teams.
It just never last.

I'm not unhappy with the decision to go with Pop's. I think he's a great coach that could win every year and he's been doing more with less year by year as TD and Manu continue their decline. That said, the Spurs front office always does a fantastic job at finding gems who fit a need and Pop's does a great job at getting the most out of that player.
