What do you guys think of him? Did his contract surprise you? The full details of his contract arent out yet but Im interested in hearing your thoughts on him.

$32m over 4 is what's being reported but I think it is on the high end. But I think you'll have to offer something substantial for him to consider other offers.

His contract isn't that big of a surprise honestly. Good stretch 4's are valuable in this league and he is one of the best. Also a good locker room guy and high character.
I wouldn't have offered that much for the situation we're in right now but don't think it's a terrible contract. People here will regret not appreciating Frye in a couple of years.
Good luck to him and I hope he keeps his health.

A lot of the realGM fan base really thought he scrubbed it up 2nd half of season.
The supporters brought up the +/- stat.
I think he's overpaid but a good fit for Orlando.
Suns will somewhat miss him but I'm kind of glad he's gone he really started to derail down the season

I never thought of him much as a passer but I'm not sure he was asked to initiate offense much. He's not as bad of a defender as some will lead you to believe; not a rim protector but is big and seems decent at defensive positioning.
Great guy and will help pace the floor for your young guards. Rich contract but it's not like he sucks or anything.

Good for you Channing. A great hometown/comeback story. Do work and secure your fam's future. Come back and work for the Suns when you retire. Thanks for hitting some dagger threes and playing some solid post-defense, but at 8m a year, for four more years? Yeah, we're good.

He's about 4mill a year overpaid. Not a bad player but he doesn't do anything great unless he's in a good shooting streak.

In 2 years, he will be one of the worst contracts in the league.

I thought he was overpaid on his last contract, was shocked what he got on his new one. He has always been inconsistent but it looked like he was going to put it together last year but he just faded down the stretch. Having him was nice but he couldn't be counted on in big games and I'm happy he opt'd out to give the team more cap space.

Frye is the ultimate intangibles guy. So-so PER, but he leads the team in net +/- per 48 pretty much every year. He was a top 10 player according to RPM.
He stretches the floor, he knows where to stand on the perimeter to get open, he has good anticipation on defense, doesn't turn the ball over a lot, good help defender, good defensive situation awareness (help defense) even if he's not a great one on one defender. Decent shot blocker, sets good screens. Above average athlete, good length.
Basically, high IQ player with a deep shot and the length to play 4/5, and the IQ and effort to be a good team defender overall (even if average to below average individual defender). Super solid lockerroom guy, very good teammate.
Given how gracefully Kurt Thomas aged, I think Frye's game will degrade slowly as well as neither was predicated on athleticism. I expect he will still be a very serviceable player at the end of his contract.
I think $8m is actually just about right when you measure his net effect on court.

It doesn't totally surprise me, and at first I thought it was an odd signing for the Magic. But what it will do is allow Payton (if you are planning on starting him) to flourish, because he opens up the paint for the pg to drive. You might try and find a Zach Lowe Grantland interview with Dragic where he talks about one of the major reasons he improved so much was because Frye made his game SO much easier.
If Payton can play the pick n roll game with Frye, it will be huge for you guys. There are quite a few guys around here that were not fans of him, but that's because they mostly look at raw stats and wonder why he only averages 5 rebounds a game.
His numbers may not look all that impressive, but his impact on the team could be tremendous. Dragic and Frye were the most efficient pick-n-roll tandem in the league, and I'm sure many of the posters here will sorely miss him, especially if we don't replace him with an adequate floor spacing 4.
Other than being great at the pick-n-roll, he can stand at the 3 pt line, and knock down shots, so this will allow Payton or Oladipo to drive, without a pf defender standing their in the paint....if they try to, you dish to Frye and he knocks down a 3.
I'm an AZ alum, but I think it actually seems like a pretty smart signing when you drafted Gordon, because he can't shoot, so if you are going to play him, it would be nice to have another big drawing defenders out of the paint...could allow alley oops to Gordon from Payton or Oladipo. Plus Gordon can make up the difference on the rebounding and defensive side (he once had 18 rebounds in a game). Many guys, if their shots are not falling, you will see them become lazy on D. Gordon is the opposite. If his shots are not falling, he tries to make up for it on D, rebounding, etc. He will rarely NOT have a signficant impact on the game.
Frye will be an awesome locker room vet too. Since you guys were SO far under the cap, I think it was worth the money. He will likely be tradeable too, because stretch 4s are in demand.

High bb iq, decent passer, and not great on D, but not terrible. I think him and Aaron Gordon actually have the exact opposite strengths, so they might work well together, given that having both of them kind of compensates for the other's weaknesses. Read my last post.
Also, I think Gordon will end up a good passer. Being an AZ alum and fan, I was sometimes very impressed with his quick thinking and passing to the open guy as a college freshman. He seems to be really smart and a quick learner. I think his work ethic and some of the things you see (that you may not expect) will impress you.

His defense was nothing to write home about when he first became a Sun but over the years he's learnt how to use his strengths which is his mobility and length to bother guys on defense. He's a pretty average defender now. He doesn't make a ton of stupid mistakes and usually plays within his abilities so he won't force passes if it's not there.

Frye is a smart player, good locker room vet that can play some Center and has a skill that is pretty valuable with his range, he is also a good passer and can defend at a good level, not great.
For the right team he is worth the MLE for 3 years probably, Orlando overpaid and gave him one year more than what I would have, but they need to do that to attract vets.
The thing is, If I'm the Magic I prefer to keep giving minutes to young guys, or sign a guy like Ed Davis/Ekpe Udoh, younger guys with some potential, and cheaper, than get Frye, but I understand they value his presence in the locker room and his ability in the floor to help their young players develop, you can't develop a roster full of youngsters at the same time sooo... could be worthy, I would grade the signing probably with a C+ for Orlando.
The thing also is that they are kind of free salary wise, Frye contract is not going to limit them that much, so it's not that big of a deal, it could make Harris expendable if keeps getting injured or does not progress as expected.

You may underestimate how much easier he will make the game for Payton and Oladipo by stretching the floor and playing the pick-n-roll. This will be hard to quantify because people could just credit those guys. But make no mistake, he will make their jobs much easier. I think he will also help Gordon a lot just learning the nuances at the NBA level and possibly how he turned into a guy that can shoot 3s when he never did that in college of his first few years. Also should open up paint for Gordon and alley oops if they play together.

I understand thhat, that's why I said his ability will help their youngsters.
Still I dont know if that's worth 8m$/y, I don't think Frye got many offers that high, and that long, probably you could've get him for 21m$/3y, for example.

At that price, I rather him not be on the team. Good luck to him regardless.
What's funny is that the Magic let Ryan Anderson walk for pretty much the same contract a couple years ago
