Glory Awaits! WNBA Finals - Mighty Mercury vs Sky

merc up 2-0 against the Sky

two blowouts.

our ladies can clinch the best of 5 championship series next game, Game 3, Friday at 5 pm AZ time (ESPN2)

as someone pointed out in this thread, there now has been blood:

The Sky certainly made it their mission to bring more physicality to Game 2, particularly against Mercury center Brittney Griner, who suffered a cut above her right eye and a chipped tooth after getting hit in the face two separate times in the first half.

After trailing for the entirety of Sunday's Game 1, Chicago actually led Phoenix as late as the second quarter Tuesday.

But with four minutes left before halftime and the score tied at 31, the Mercury delivered the knockout punch.

Taurasi hit a 3-pointer, then got fouled while making a layup and sank the free throw. Candice Dupree scored on a floater in between four Griner free throws, and the Mercury scored 12 unanswered points to go up 43-31 before the Sky knew what hit them.

Sparks were always getting beat ont he boards until they fired their coach earlier this season. since then they've been a more consistent team:

The Sparks went 6-6 in the month since Toler took over, which is a bit misleading because of the schedule they had. The team had a five games-in-seven nights stretch, three back-to-backs and seven games against playoff teams.

But while they've played with more energy and responded well to the coaching change, the issues which started this funk remain.

Parker says she is "tired of everybody saying how much talent we have."

"In years past, we had a lot of talent and we just won games because of it. We didn't win games by reversing the ball, by making the extra pass, by locking down defensively and having set defensive schemes. So I think those things we were getting away with the last couple years have kind of caught up to us and are the reason we're losing in the last minutes of games.

"There's 10 games this this year that probably could've gone the other way, and if we'd have won those 10 games, everybody would be like, 'Oh my gosh, you guys are so great.' But we wouldn't have been great. We're still doing the same things we were doing before, and those things have to change before we're going to become great.

it's really gonna be a chance for Griner to test her mettle against some savvy vets like Parker. BG needs to lock the paint down and kill any hope LA has of hustling out two victories (this round is best of 3).

and of course, it is always fun to see the best of the best play. DT is past her physical prime, but still in peak form. the white Kobe Bryant. only WNBA player to lead the league in scoring for a season and assists for a season. can you imagine how dominant a perimeter player has to be to be the best scorer AND the best playmaker in the league?

well if you want help imagining it then watch our Mighty Mercury march to a championship.

Couldn't care less about women's basketball but since it's Phoenix v. LA, I'll chime in with a "go **** yourselves, Lady Lakers."

with respect, that's so ignorant and inaccurate.

go to a Mercury game. it is the best sports experience in Phoenix. it's like going to a Red Sox game at fenway as opposed to a Dbacks game at Chase-- at Mercury games, the crowd understands basketball, they generate their own chants, and they cheer louder for basketball plays than they do for free tshirts.

i don't know if that tired 'wnba sucks' joke would have been funny 10 years ago, but today it's stupid.

Go Liberty!!! Been in the league since the beginning and still no championship.

That Family Guy snippet was about 10 years ago. Inaccurate or not, it's still funny as hell!

Game 1 vs Minnesota starting right now. It looks like a packed arena all the fans wearing white. Feels like I'm watching a coyotes playoff game.

All the ladies showed up last night, especially B-Unit and Penny Taylor. Bonner was hitting the three and hustling, so I can't complain about her play as much as I prefer to complain :x

It was easy to see how much this team missed Penny Taylor last year. She does everything. She's like a perimeter version of Dupree, who also does everything and does it all very well. We are really spoiled by all the great players on this team.

Not to mention DT, who is just salty as ****. She constantly looks ready to out and out murder Lynx players.

Unfortunately, the Lynx clawed their way back in the 4th. Hopefully that game will be a lesson to some of our players about why you can't ever take yer foot off the pedal. I will be surprised if the Lynx don't respond at home and send this series back to Phx on Tuesday for Game 3.

If it does, I'm going. Lynx are like the Mercury's Spurs. The rubber match would be insane. There will be blood.

Mercury advance to the Finals. Its nice having a player like DT that will show up in big moments and win you the game.

Can we trade Bledsoe for Taurasi please? She has bigger balls than he does.

That 60 ft heave to close the third quarter was a backbreaker.

The moment it happened I thought it might be one of the most devastating shots I've seen in a deciding PO game outside of the fourth quarter in my entire life. iirc, that tied the game (which was very close thru 3 quarters) and the mercury proceeded to bust open a 20 pt lead as the fourth quarter began.

Just a devastating, backbreaking shot by DT. I would pay $3 to see a gif of the Lynx's reaction to it.

The Mercury are a machine this year. Sprint thru the finish line, ladies!!!

Lynx is a far superior team than either possible finalist in the East. I'd be shocked if Mercury lost the finals.

Actually, the Mercury were up by five to end the third quarter after DT made that shot.

esp of della donne is struggling w injury.

but u gotta finish the race. i wasn't a Mercury fan during either of their championship seasons.

so.

i'm hopeful about getting a taste of rooting on a championship team. that way i know the ins and outs of the emotions of being a fan of the champs ahead of the suns' breakthru chip this year.

Hi, when it comes to WNBA, i have to admit that i only follow playoffs, because regular season kinda sucks, anyhow, Lynx were a tough team to beat, but they didnt have anyone able to stop Griner.
Dont sleep on Chicago, they have a very talented team, you have to consider that they are better than their record because they suffered a lot of injuries during regular season, but now they are together. Delle Donne will be a key player for them.

You're right, don't let Chicago's 15-19 record fool you. They've had injuries and their best player missed a good month or so. They also were pretty lucky coming back from a 17 point deficit with 7 min left in a critical game 3 of the first round. But they're there for a reason because of Della Donna she could really play she reminds me of Reggie Miller type of player. The finals is 5 game format, should be an exciting series starting Sunday
