Tell me about Alvin Gentry

Post#1 » by Nyce_1 » Fri Jan 30, 2015 11:30 pm

Hey Guys,

Magic fan that just looking for the pros/cons of Gentry. We'll likely be firing our coach soon and Gentry is one of the names being thrown around. Any info about his coaching style, strengths, weaknesses, etc is greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Great coach, loved him when he coached the Suns. A bit of a players coach. He was here for 7SOL & I think brought a lot of that to the W's this year. Needs a good defensive coach with him. You could do a lot worse.

Yes Sir, Motherf*ckers.

I think Alvin is better off as an assistant serving in the Good Cop role. Nash, Hill, and the older guys loved him and not sure if he's the right guy for a bunch of young'ins. The guy has put in his time that is for sure and probably deserves another shot.

Gentry was undermined here by Lindsay Hunter, who was absolutely poison, along with his cohort in the GM position in Lance Blanks. Gentry had a really good year his first year here and is sort of a father figure type of coach. I would call him marginally good. You could do better, you could do alot worse.

Yikes, there is open discussion in the press about a new coach even before the present coach is fired. Someone better just pull the trigger.

Thanks guys. I remember him doing well here and a bit surprised when he was fired. Reading he needs a defensive assistant, I wonder what his connections are through the coaching circles. Maybe Nate or Malone? Guess we'll find out in time.

Word around Orlando is our coach would've been fired but lack of quality assistant to take over interim position has delayed the inevitable.

He would be great, and he would also be one guy who would be able to utilize Frye in the way he should. Not that you want Frye playing a ton, but he could REALLY help Dipo and Payton develop a great pick n roll game.

The good thing about your players is that you already have defensive minded guys in Payton, Dipo and Gordon, but Gentry knows how to get the most out of a team offensively. I guarantee you he would make your team more exciting. We also had Skiles as a coach and for your sake, I hope you don't get him (plus I am a Wildcat fan so I pull for you guys because of Frye and Gordon and I also like Dipo, Payton, Harris, Vucevic...heck, even Nicholson, Harkless and O'Quinn).

I'm not a huge Mark Jackson fan either for you guys because he is more defensive minded, and I think you need more offense and just seeing Kerr take that same GS team to another level doesn't make me think too much of Jackson, though I guess you could say he laid the groundwork. Gentry is a positive guy...team will love him...Skiles the opposite....Jackson probably somewhere in between.

Good assistant coach, and did well with Dragic. Well at least when he was an assistant. Had a great run in 2010, when he lucked out getting a great chemistry team.

I thought he did a poor job coaching for us, even in 2010. He literally has a substitution time set, and sticks with it. He often pulled the hot hand, let them cool off, and hoped that hot hand would catch fire again. Started off with some good timeouts, but honestly, any timeouts or in game adjustments was more than we saw under D'Antoni.

Overall I give a C-, as a head coach, and that is only because he had that great year in 2010. But I think he is a B+ as an assistant. Who knows, he might have a great run with Frye, but I highly doubt it. At best, he would do well with a vet team, who are very smart and don't really need a coach.

Gentry is better suited with a team consisting of mostly veterans. Don't think a young magic team and gentry will be a good fit

Gentry loves Frye and he even tried to mold markieff into a Frye type of player (a stretch 4) which I hated.

Please tell the Magic FO to hire Mark Jackson instead, so I don't have to hear his sh*t commentary on ESPN games anymore. Thanks!

I wonder how Gentry would do with this current suns roster.

Nothing. He would still be searching for the two line up groups. He would still take out the hot hand, he would still start the third, just like he starts the game, even if the starters completely suck arse. He would still have regular substitution times regardless of current success on the floor. We'd still lack discipline, and our defense would be the same.

However, he might be great in an assistant role.

We should hire the Czar as an assistant coach. The dude seems to still love to coach, and his connection to Ukraine might be great for Len, and his development.
