Offseason Trade and Free Agency Discussion

Lets keep the trade stuff here and out of the draft thread if it isn't talking about Porzingis or trading picks. There has been much discussion of trading for Cousins in the draft thread when it has nothing to do with the draft. Lets bring that discussion here if people want to keep discussing Cousins.
I will leave the other free agency thread open for a bit in case anyone wants to respond to posts there. But if you want an ongoing discussion about something you are talking about in that thread, copy the post you are responding to, and respond to it in this one.
Thanks.

I read that the Cavs might be looking to sign and trade Love for assets. Wonder what they're looking for. Maybe to Portland for LMA? That'd be a win for both franchises and players

Aldridge will likely go to Spurs.
Love wants to opt in doesnt he? So he can get a 5 year contract in the NEW raised cap-space NBA. He can earn an additional 30 million in a 5 year contract if he does that.

I said this in the other free agency thread, but yes, I think he stays for one year (either opting in or getting a new one year deal) and then explores free agency next year when many teams can offer him the max...and it gives him a year to perhaps get a chip with LeBron who couldn't get one without him (though obviously not having Irving also played a role).

Or Dallas...isn't that where he is from?

Question about trades.....
Can the Suns have 2 different trades with the same team?
(Package 1 for Cousins, then Package 2 (Knight) for other assets)

Just read on REALGM blurb aboe that execs think the Cavs will S&T Love because he will be worth too much money with Le Bron and Kyrie.
Now, I still think its a long shot to get him but would the Morris twins (as rotational players) and draft picks help the Cavs - giving them bench depth and some economic relief with them needing to sign Thompson. I would almost take JR Smith for one year if it meant getting Love
I just don't Aldridge coming to Phoenix when he can stay in Portland , go to Dallas or heaven forbid, San Antonio.

I am not worried about Aldridge going to San Antonio. Even if he did, he is nothing compared to Tim Duncan. No one is. Even David Robinson could never get to the finals before Duncan arrived. Duncan is arguably a top five player of all time.

This is all I can say about potentially trading Len, Bledsoe or Knight, Warren, Goodwin, and picks for Demarcus Cousins:

If they were going to definitely S&T him, the twins would make perfect sense, because they are on reasonable contracts, they will likely max Tristan on top of LeBron and Kyrie, and the twins could come off the bench together. Tucker would work for them too. They don't really need draft picks.
But we would have to be prepared for Love to leave next summer. I'm guessing he doesn't want to sign more than a one year deal (though I'm not sure if it's possible to S&T a guy with a one year contract..wish JDLAW was around to comment on that).

Exactly these kind of deals almost never happen. That was one historic instance of an exception

2 players that remind me of Cousins in history. Both were genuine bigs, with strong personalities on terrible teams.
Kevin Garnett was traded for 5 players and 2 firsts. Won a championship the next year.
Charles Barkley was traded for 3 players. 5 seconds and a home game from a championship the next year.

Cousins last 10 games of the season...
27.9 points
15.1 rebounds
5.1 assist
2.3 blocks
1.9 steals
You sell the farm for that type of player... then you build around him correctly.

I think Aldridge might end up in New York. He's a guy Phil wants and he will go all out for LMA.
In regards to Cousins, I will boycott this team if we get him. He's more of a cancer than Melo and Kobe combined. He has the attitude of a 10 year old girl whose parents won't let her get her ears pierced.

Helps the case for Bledsoe for Pick 4.
Aldridge, Melo, Bledsoe looks like a good "big 3".
Spurs will push though.... If they miss out on Aldridge, they will go for Gasol.

I wonder what leverage Cle has for posturing a sign and trade? correct me if im wrong but cant Kevin Love just opt out and look for a team on his own?

Lebron publicly stated that he wants Tristan Thompson back. Kevin Love said before the season ended he wants to be back in Cleveland. Problem for Cleveland is that both Thompson and Love want max contracts. You cannot give a max contract to your starting power forward AND your backup power forward. That would be insane. Plus that would be four max contracts total on the team when you add in Lebron's and Irving's. Too much money for only four players. Especially when one of them would not even be a starter. You do not give a max deal to a player who comes off the bench.
Analyzing what Cleveland was able to do without Love playing will most likely factor into the decision. They were successful with Thompson starting and could have won the finals had Irving not gotten injured. Maybe they choose to max one and sign and trade the other. I am guessing it will be a sign and trade of Love. Even if he opts-in to his contract, they can still trade him. No need to pay two power forwards max contracts when your money can allocated better elsewhere. Thompson is a Klutch sports guy with the same agent as Lebron so he is the one I see staying. Not to mention but Lebron has not come out and said we need Love back but he did say that about Thompson.
If the Suns can get Aldridge in free agency, go after him obviously. If not, they can try for Love through a sign and trade. If Cleveland is willing to take on J.R. Smith, then I am sure they would have no problem with Morris brothers. As much as I dislike the Morris brothers, they would dramatically help Cleveland's depth and give them scoring off the bench. Cleveland would suddenly be loaded with a starting lineup of Irving, Shumpert, Lebron, Thompson, and Mozgov, and a bench of Dellavedova, Smith, Marcus, Markieff, and Varejao, Ten deep team where everyone knows their roles. They save money by not giving that huge 5 year max to Love and they replace him with something they desperately need in bench scoring. I can see it happening. Just do not know if Love turns the Suns into a playoff contender or more.

Charles Barkley was traded for 3 players. 5 seconds and a home game from a championship the next year.
There are a couple of big differences though.
That Celtics team had Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Rajon Rondo, Kendrick Perkins, Tony Allen, Eddie House, Glen Davis, P.J. Brown, Sam Cassell, and others.
That Suns team had Kevin Johnson, Dan Majerle, Cedric Ceballos, Danny Ainge, Tom Chambers, Mark West, Oliver Miller, Richard Dumas, and others.
If the Suns trade for Cousins (which I am against anyway) and have to trade a bunch of assets for him, who will be on the team when it is all said and done? Cousins, maybe Knight or Bledsoe, and some rookies? Why does anyone think the Suns will be better than what the Kings are right now if they trade the entire team for Cousins.
The other big thing about comparing Cousins to Garnett and Barkley is this. Garnett made the playoffs in eight of his first nine seasons with the Timberwolves. Barkley made the playoffs in six of his eight seasons with the 76ers. Cousins has not made the playoffs once in five years. Furthermore, the Kings have never even won more than 29 games with Cousins on the team. Those are things I have stated before earlier this year. Sorry but I do not see a winner when I look at Cousins. I see a player with great stats but not a guy that will lead you to the promised land. I want nothing to do with him.
