What are your thoughts on Sonny Weems?

Post#1 » by bwgood77 » Thu Oct 1, 2015 4:44 am

He seems like a valuable guy to me. I don't care as much about Booker and Archie not getting minutes if Weems is an awesome contributer...I think his experience could be valuable.

I think his experience in the Euroleague will pay off. Just playing in a team focused environment rather than a star-driven system, will make him a better facilitator, defender and team player. I expect he will be getting the majority of the back up 2 minutes unless Booker or Archie starts playing out of their mind.

I really rate him.

I remember going to games in Toronto when he was there and he was like Green before games - throwing down dunks that teammates drop their jaw at - that elite athleticism that separates good from great.

I think he's going to surprise a few people. Euroleague isn't NBA, but he was the top perimeter guy (or top 2-3 SG/SF) for the last couple years and I think playing away from the USA has humbled him a bit.

He's a sneaky good defender. I can see us throwing him at guys like Harden and Klay etc cos he's got fantastic size and athleticism for a defender.

Just need that 3pt shot to drop at 35% and 1.2 - 1.5 a game and he'll get 25mins easily. I think Hornaceck will love him and he's going to bring it every night.

I think he'll make Archie expendable.

Very good player. I think he will surprise a lot of people, he can be the new Anthony Parker in the league.
His contract is an steal to me.

I think he has a silly name, but will be a valuable contributor for the reasons others have stated.

Gerald Green, he is. Athletic guy who needed to develop. He went overseas and developed his overall game and leadership. Not as athletic as Green, but alot smarter. Appreciative of his opportunity here. Good locker room guy I expect.

If he can get his spot up three ball going, I cant see why he cant play the J-Rich role- spotup- 3 point shooter in transition. Maybe add some extra Defence too because J Rich was a putrid team defender.

He isn't half as good a 3pt shooter as Green either which is the main reason for Green's success here.

And Green isn't half as good a defender as Weems which is the main reason for Green's failure here. Oh and BBIQ also.

Weems may be a better defender than Green just because Green was so awful at it but I don't think Weems has a reputation for being a really good defender or anything yet. He may be one but I haven't read anything which really praised his defense or even recognized it.

Agreed on the Bball iq.

I didn't know his defense either but since Weems came to Suns, whatever I read about him praises his defense. They say Weems has learned how to defend very well in Europe and so on. He definitely has the tools to be a good defender.

Weems shot 42% from the 3 over the last 4 years in europe. Green shot 38% in his time in Phoenix. Green took alot more threes, but in longer seasons and the Euro three is a little shorter. However, Weems regularly took and made threes from NBA range (in this video about half would be at or within a couple inches of an NBA three https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWDmPJegq5A). So, maybe you could make the case that Green is a slightly better three point shooter, but saying "isn't half as good" is a gross exaggeration.

Weems produced 42% over 4 full seasons where he was arguably the best player on his team.

Maybe you are right, but its arguable.

After today's scrimmage I am impressed with his basketball iq of how to make the right decision at the right time. He was one of the more consistent shooters today think he went 3 for 5 from 3. He also is a very smooth athlete and has sneaky quickness and speed. He was effective on d and shut down Booker and Goodwin for the most part.

Feel like he is another PJ Tucker type for us
Humbled by being out of the NBA but appreciative of his role here. And I think he will excel. But I'd rather give consistent minutes to Booker at least if not Goodwin also
