Whats Your Draft History?

Post#1 » by SunZel » Sun May 21, 2017 4:10 pm

What players did you honestly want in the draft with the highest pick each year? I got into the draft in 2011 so ill start there.

2011- Marshon Brooks - I was a noob then...I saw he scored 52 and we needed a sg so i wanted him.

2012 - Jeremy Lamb- we needed a sg and he looked real good in college.

2013 - CJ McCollum- OMG i was rabid about McCollum during this draft, i knew he was going to be good. I wanted the suns to draft him so bad...

2014 - Hood or Warren, either was fine with me.

2015 - I wanted Kaminsky to fall to us or to trade up and get him. I wanted no one else within our range...

2016 - I wanted Dragan Bender and we got him :D

2017 - I really want Jackson but will settle for Isaac.

I'm mostly a need person except when i see a once in a decade talent, but we have never really been in position to get a talent like that..

Nice thread! Let's see how my memory serves me...

2016 - Bender (or Chriss) - I was happy on draftday as a pig in sht! :D I was also high on Sabonis.

2015 - Turner or Lyles - they were taken ahead of us, so I was OK with Book, Now I'm more than OK, although Turner would be good as well.

2014 - Lavine... also taken ahead of us by Minny. Would be nice here. I was also high on Payne, with his steady 4 year development, character (in times of the Morri), good 3pt shooting and 37' vertical with that size. He can't get off the bench there at a position of need with with seemingly good skill fit - strange. I also liked Young.

2013 - I was really underwhelmed. Wanted Noel, Len or Zeller, but did not care. I guess I still don't, but I like Len more than the majority here.

2012 - Leonard, or Harkless. One was taken ahead of us, the Harkless later... would have been better.

2011 - I was happy for either of the Morri, liked Kieff better, b/c I thought Marcus would be too much of a tweener in the league. I also liked Kwhai for his defense, so I was happy with this draft. Now? :D Not so much.

Sad thing is: most of the guys I wanted in the last 5-6 years were taken 1-2 picks ahead of us, and turned out to be good. So long JJ :(

2016- i was a take bender if he falls guy. Was also high on chriss and brown. Was anti dunn and buddy.

2015- liked a lot of guys in the suns range and would have been cool with booker, turner, lyles, or dekker.

2014 - wasnt super high on Warren. Liked hood, young, and nurkic. Was really high on bogdan and would have been fine taking him with the enis pick.

2013- liked mclamore and len. Was high on adams too but probably not enough to take him at 5.

Here's the past 10 years. I'm also discounting the guys that I really really wanted, but we're slated to go waaaaaaaaay before our pick.

Mine constantly changes. I'm usually gun-ho on a player or two, then change it accordingly around draft day to a more reasonably slotted player once the picture clears up and players are predicted to be well off the board.

2016 - Jamal Murray (Bender on draft day)

2015 - WCS (Payne on draft day)

2014 -  LaVine

2013 - Shabazz or Noel (Noel on draft day)

2012 - Austin Rivers

2011 - Kemba Walker

2010 - No 1st rounder

2009 - Brandon Jennings (TERRENCE WILLIAMS on draft day!)

2008 - Anthony Randolph or Hibbert

2007 - Wilson Chandler (29th pick, lol)

I wanted Ulis at 13 last year and expected Bender or Chriss at 4 (and was fine with it but not high on anyone there).

2015: I wanted Turner, if available, then Portis.
2014: I wanted Capela or McGary.
2013: I wanted Bennett or Noel but only because I wanted high ceiling players that were unlikely to help in first year because I was completely buying into the Wiggins hype for the next season.
2012: I didn't want anyone all that much, leaned towards Sullinger or Zeller.
2011: I wanted Klay Thompson, Jimmer Fredette or Kemba Walker. All were gone so I wanted to trade out.
2010: I wanted us to trade into the first and pick Ed Davis.
2009: I wanted Ty Lawson or Taj Gibson.
2008: I wanted Jerryd Bayless, he was gone so I wanted to trade into a later year.
2007: I thought it was basically a 2 player draft (Oden/Durant) and didn't really care about anyone else.
2006: I remember not liking anyone but Brandon Roy that year and knew we'd never get there.
2005: I wanted Nate Robinson, sorta got what I wanted for a little while.
2004: I wanted Josh Childress or Andre Igoudala

Before that, I remember thinking Stromile Swift and Marcus Fizer were going to be stars. I thought Don Maclean would be a healthier version of Danny Manning (post ACL Danny). I was convinced that Lebron, Carmelo, Wade and Bosh were all due for stardom but thought Melo and James would be tossups at the top. I wanted Nene the year we got Amare. I thought Kwame and Olowakandi were the two biggest reaches I had ever seen as they were drafted. I remember falling for the Jonathan Bender hype but I was a huge Marion fan so I didn't mind so much when Indiana beat us out (and I wanted Jason Terry if Shawn was gone). I wanted Steve Nash and yes, I wanted Dan Majerle. It's urban myth that none of us knew anything about him, a lot of us college basketball junkies were really high on him.

damn he's old! :) ...I was 19 in 1990.

1990 - ..sad year, Hank Gathers was my man! ran home from basketball practice to watch Hank and Bo do their thang, only to watch Hank collapse and die...as I tried to go to sleep, the temporality of life hit me kept me up a little. I was hoping Jerod Mustaf fell, becareful what you wish for, I was cool with Jayson Williams, but wanted Elden Campbell...bigs with springs weren't as common and things were a little tougher then...I was a ball fanatic...but it was impossible to know everyone pre internet, league passes and multiple all sports channels.

1991 - I was pissed! No pick!

1992 - Latrell Sprewell; I was always a BPA guy, positionally I wanted Sean Rooks, we went Oliver Miller. FUNNIEST SUMMER EVER AS A SUNS FAN!!! Barkley, Dumas and Miller added to a good team with KJ, Majerele, TC, Mark West. GREAT MEMORIES!!! I was playing basketball, coaching basketball, had a job as a youth coordinator facilitating basketball. first child, 1st condo, keys to the middle school gym next to me...saw or listened to EVERY SUNS GAME!!! We shot 50 free throws per preseason game...expectations were through the roof and we were one Paxson Jumper away :( ...still hurts to this day.

1993 - I wanted Chris Mills to fall, he didn't, Nick Van Exel is the name I hoped we'd call, again, I was always bps, suns went by position, Malcolm Mackey.

1994 - Based on Sprewell and Vanexel, I officially THINK i'm smarter than the Suns brass and they should offer me a job :) ...I was cool with Wesley Person or Monty Williams. We took Wes...I did want Howard Eisley in the 2nd round, we passed on him. I was intrigued by Yinka Dare...I think it was more his name, lol. glad he didn't fall.

1995 - LOVED THIS DRAFT AS IT HAPPEN!!! I wanted Michael Finley and I was in my final year at ASU, so I wanted Mario Bennett, actually played with and against him (no, I didn't play for ASU :)) To this day, my favorite draft as it happened. 2002 was close, had they taken Prince over Casey Jacobsen it would be 2002. 2016 is close, let's see how it plays out. if we can get Jackson and fox, 2017 will be my new favorite.

1996 - Steve Nash was the pick, I was a little sour, I liked Nash a lot, was a big Santa Clarita fan in the tournament, but the hornets wanted a big guy and Sacremento had ties to Predrag, so after GS and Clevelend, it looked like that high school phenom was ours, Kobe bryant was my guy. Sorry Steve!!!

1997 - we didn't have a pick, one of the few times I wasn't pissed. there was nobody really there and from everything I read about Stephen Jackson, I was convinced he was a steal and we got a 1st round type of guy with him.

1998 - No pick and I was pissed! Slam Magazine had me convinced Felipe Lopez was the truufff! ...just struggled a little in college. I had a few little poems published in Slam Magazine...even begged them to do a write up on my favorite, KJ, maybe it was just a coincidence, but a few months later they did. Plus, high school kids were envogue, Al harrington and Rashard Lewis were out there, hell, I'd even take Jelani Mccoy from the Bruins.

1999 - I wanted Corey Maggette, sorry Shawn! Marion it was, probably a good thing I didn't work for the Suns :) ...but i was cool with Shawn, wasn't the end of the world, although I had no idea how much of an impact he'd have on the valley of the sun.

I honestly can't remember that many of them that closely. I have always read a ton of stuff from Ford and nbadraft.net all the way back to like 2002, but I can't remember often really hoping one way or another...more just fascinated there was all this info on all these guys out there for years...plus we were not getting really high draft picks much of the time.

I don't remember who I wanted in 2002 but Phil Weber told me they love Amare, so I just listened and wondered if they would get him

I do remember in 04 I really wanted Iguodala

In 2011 I don't remember having too much preference but felt we were going to take a Morris twin

2012 I wanted Terrence Ross

2013 I wanted Gobert (just kidding I wanted McLemore)

2014 I wanted Warren I'm pretty sure but also kind of wanted Hood. When Hood and Gary Harris slipped to our 2nd pick I was stoked, and then couldn't believe we took Ennis

2015 I wasn't real high on anyone I don't think but would have been fine with a bunch of guys in our range. Being that I love shooters and had wanted Ross a few years before and we had bigs, I was happy to get Booker. I liked some of the guys ahead of us like Johnson 'and Turner but assumed they'd be gone.

2016 I'm sure most that were around remember I was super high on Bender for a long time and then became really high on Chriss a couple months before the draft. I actually brought both up first on the forums. I remember when I first mentioned Chriss it looked like we could get him at 13, and slowly it began to where he rose up the boards....never thought he'd be in consideration for our 4th pick though.

2017, like last year, I'm hoping Jackson slips. I was really scared Boston would take Bender last year and feel the same about Jackson this year. At least this year it doesn't really fit a need. So they will have to view him as the clear cut top prospect at 3 above everyone else.

2000 - wanted speedy claxton or Deshawn Stevenson to fall, they didn't. Pick time I wanted El Amin or Eddie House (but was afraid of my own bias towards Eddie, another guy I met and played with/against). We took Jake, wasn't crazy about it, didn't know much but they sold it well. Ctreager and cats like that on the Espn board talked me off the ledge :)

2001 - No pick...I was overseas...no access...no recollection

2002 - One of our greatest drafts ever. I wanted Amare (would have been cool with nene...at the time anyways) and Tayshaun Prince...that would have been perfect...true explosive low post presence with a legit athletic perimeter defender, two birds, one draft! We took Amare and Casey Jacobson. The fact that one requires two names and the other is referred to only by one, says it all :)

2003 - Weird Draft! at the time I thought it was the greatest draft ever!!! maybe I just read way too much into it. Of course Lebron got the party started. I bounced back an forth quite a bit with jarvis Hayes, Marcus Banks, Luke Ridnour and Reece Gaines. I was sure one of them would fall, no luck, with internationals players being all the rage, I was leaning towards barbosa (braziliansunfreak :) for anyone with old espn times...not me..but cool guy) or maybe delfino. I was cool with Zarko and even cooler when we found a way to grab Barbosa later in the draft...in fact, this was one of the better drafts....at the time anyways.

2004 - don't get me started :) this was the start of a draft period I'd rather forget. I wanted Iggy and would have been cool Deng....we could have had one, but got neither, traded the pick away.

2005 - I prayed Ike Diogou would fall, he didn't, I wanted Monta Ellis, got a thing for bpa's especially quick guards, would have been cool with Chris Taft, a friend of mine that I coached with sold me on David Lee. Nate Robinson, ok, not the end of the world, except we traded him off. Gortat was a steal in the 2nd, but i had no idea who he was at the time.

2006 - No lie, I wanted Rajon Rondo or Sergio Rodriguez, WE HAD BOTH, WE GOT RID OF BOTH!!! So the trend of giving away 1st round draft picks like tic tacs was in full swing. The dark ages of Phoenix Suns Drafts :)

2007 - I was hoping Javaris Crittenton would fall, was cool with Rudy Fernandez, Tiago Splitter and even taking a chance with Marc Gasol....Damn you Dirk!!! ...although Gasol was based more on his brother's success. We had Rudy and surprise gave him up for a bag of chips. We did keep Alando Tucker, wasn't too crazy about it, but I was just delighted that we are keeping something.

2008 - What is our obsession with taking the "other one" genetically? with the exception of Vanadrsdale, we had 'the other' Durant, 'the other' griffin, 'the other' morris brother...although in their case they are both 'the other' ...so we took 'the other' Lopez brother. I wanted Roy Hibbert, but wasn't really sold on anyone in this draft.

2009 - I wanted Steph Curry!!! rumor, and a strong rumor, was Amare, a fading Amare was on the table and a swap was agreed upon between us and Golden State. Curry fell and I was jumping for joy only to find out that either it was a horrible rumor, or G.S. pulled out once Curry was available :( ...after thinking we had Curry, nothing would quite suffice...I guess I would have chosen Jrue Holiday over Earl Clark, but neither was Curry, so it was, what it was.

Nice post. I remember both Van Arsdales although Dick obviously stands out to me and not just because he gave me a signed basketball the night he went for 18 points against the Knicks, which also happened to be his final game in the NBA (1977). And I remember a Lopez, a Griffin, a Morris and then another Morris. I even remember Chuck's little brother, Wesley Person along with a few other BB relatives but I don't remember having the other "Durant"? Am I just getting old?

That's dope! (Vanarsdale's John hancock) yeah, durants brother wasn't a big deal....either he was in our summer league, or invited post draft but didn't make the summer squad.

This is actually cool thread....ive enjoyed reading everybody's response....weve all been connected for quite a long time without even knowing it, or each other.

Great idea for a thread.

These are the ones I REALLY remember:

2016 - I really wanted Brogdon with our #28. Glad that is on record somewhere cos he turned out nice! Also wanted Dunn big time, as well as Juancho Hernangomez.

2015 - Stanley Johnson. I think he was all I was focussed on, but I remember being ok with Booker. Vaguely remember wanting Turner too but reading that the team drafting him would need to teach him how to run properly!? Which scared me off haha

2014 - Smart, Gordon and Hood were the two I really wanted...And I remember calling bust with Exum back then too. I was high on Russ Smith as well for some reason. Had a major draft hard on for KJ McDaniels too. Such a promising rookie season then just about gone. There's an elite CBA player in there somewhere...

2013 - I was ALL on board Noel or McLemore. Firmly believed both would be long-term starters and potential All Stars. I remember hating on Len for stretches and thinking he's RoLo 2.0. Also remember saying Trey Burke was going to flop massively, whilst a few others said he'd be an All Star. REALLY wanted Adams cos he's a kiwi, but didn't see him being this good this soon (though he regressed this season). Really wanted Dieng and I remember comparing Archie friggin Goodwin to EDDIE JONES...Just gave myself an uppercut.

2012 - I think I wanted Jeremy Lamb or Austin Rivers. DID NOT WANT Marshall - hated it then...Now, even moreso. Wanted Perry Jones as well at that pick. I remember seeing Lamb and thinking 'this dude is going to be a STAR'. Rivers I thought was going to be an elite scorer - triple threat etc etc...HA.

There's plenty more but lunchbreak is over. My biggest 'want' was Anthony Randolph. Like Kerrsed and his Terrence Williams infatuation haha

2016. Murray

2015. Lyles iirc (I remembered I wasn't a fan of the Booker pick  )

2014. I was fine with Warren at that position

2013. Ben Mclemore

2012. Lamb/Terrence Jones

2011. Biyombo. Wasn't a fan of the Kieff pick. (We could've got Kawhi :noway: )

2010 - not even sure how we lost this pick.

2011 - I wanted Knight, Kemba or Fredette, the Kings picked and with 5 picks before us and both Morris brothers on board, I was sure we get at least 1 of them. Then they went 1, 2, 3. Rumor is, we liked 'the other brother' anyway, so probably wouldn't have grabbed the guys I wanted. I did like Isiah Thomas, but only because of his name and had no desire to draft him, lol

2012 - I was hoping Anthony Davis would fall to us, but he went about 13 spots ahead :) haha. I was hoping Austin Rivers would fall, when he didn't, I wanted Jared Sullinger over Kendall Marshall.

2013 - Talk about your 'blah' draft with no clear cut board leader. There were people who felt Len could go 1 and we got him at 5??? I wanted Noel with the 1st and Glen Rice Jr over Archie with the 2nd 1st round pick. I was never much for 'the other brother' but boy I did like possible chips of the old block and Glen's Sr.'s form was good enough where'd I'd gamble on his son. I used to play, stop, rewind, play, stop, rewind trying to emulate that man's jumper. Most artistic jumper to this day. Jesus shuttleworth was more efficient; but not sure it was more artistic, debatable though.

2014 - I wanted Lavine, and all that separated us was one pick and a team that had gazillion point guards already. Do I sound bitter? :) I did warm up to TJ though.

2015 - This is where I eat a buffet of crow. I wanted Dekker or Portis. Even though I was a fan of Melvin, I felt his boy Booker was too slow to get enough separation to ever get his shot off......Pretty similar to debate I have ongoing now regarding Tatum, you'd think I'd learn from my mistakes, right?

2016 - I liked Chriss and Bender. I was upset we didn't grab Chriss with the 4th pick until ....well you know how that played out :) ...I did like Sabonis as well, but grabbing Bender and Chriss made this potentially our best draft ever. GREAT DRAFT!!! Got to go all the way back to 2002 to come close.

2017 - JACKSON AND FOX!!!! BEST SUNS DRAFT EVER!!! In fact, best NBA Multi Player DRAFT EVER (excluding the individual greats like MJ, Bron, etc...they're not there). Combined with our 2nd BEST DRAFT EVER (2016, the year before) we now have the building blocks of our future dynasty. This makes up for decades of lottery misfortune and falling just inches short. Buckle up and enjoy the ride, I got a
feeling this board is about to get real crowded. CHEERS SUNS FAN!!!!

*Cool thread, I've enjoyed reading everybody else's. Cool to see how even though we don't know each other, we've been connected for quite some time.

Cool thread OP.

2008 - Robin Lopez. I really didn't feel good about anybody else then and Lopez looked like the safest pick.
2009 - Earl Clark/Jrue Holiday. Damn I really wanted Clark and was convinced he was gonna be a star. That size, skill level, too bad his head got in the way.
2010 - Gani Lawal. Thought we had a solid 7th-8th man for the future.
2011 - Kenneth Faried/Kawhi Leonard. Still bitter about this one.
2012 - Lamb/Henson. Lamb got picked before us, and I didnt want Marshall coz that basically said that we are done w Nash.
2013 - Oladipo/Noel. Although I bought into Len quickly after that.
2014 - Gary Harris. Thought he was the BPA.
2015 - Booker. BPA, didnt think he was gonna be special.
2016 - Chriss/Murray/Bender. Got 2 out of 3 which is nice.
2017 - Jackson.

I think you should just list exactly who you (honestly) would have picked in the scenario the Suns were in if we're calling it our own draft history.

2016: Jamaal Murray. Was really undecided. Still not in love with Bender, hoping for the best tho. Actual pick: Dragan Bender
2015: Devin Booker. Wasnt in love with the draft, was hoping to snag Winslow or Turner. I agrees with the pick with who was available, tho i had far lower expectations. Actual pick: Devin Booker
2014: Rodney Hood. He was my (realistic) target going in. Got excited when he was available..TJ i wasnt terribly upset about tho. Actual pick: TJ Warren
2013: Nerlens Noel. Another draft i wasnt excited about. I would've taken Noel since the only guy i really liked was Oladipo, jury still out on that assessment. Actual pick: Alex Len
2012: Royce White. Im always a sucker for wings/bigs who are playmakers. Obviously i (like others) did not know the extent of his anxiety. Man he had talent tho. Actual pick: Kendall Marshall
2011: Kawhi Leonard. Was very into him for our range. Definitely was not expecting his explosion, but i liked his tools. Wasnt too mad at Morris at the time, but certainly am now. Actual pick: Markieff Morris
2010: Ryan Richards. Late pick. Was hoping Lance Stephenson would fall. Thought Richards might be a decent faceup big project. Crapshoot at 47. Actual pick: Gani Lawal
2009: Earl Clark. Loved the pick at the time. Dude had all the tools. Really wanted Terrence Williams but when he was gone Clark would've been my pick. Misread that year apparently. Actual pick: Earl Clark
2008: Darrell Arthur. Wasnt in love with the available prospects here, but Arthur is someone i liked. Actual pick: Robin Lopez
2007: Chris Richard. Was really hoping Sean Williams would drop. Guess i got that one wrong twice. Actual pick: Rudy Fernandez (traded)
2006: Marcus Williams. Was stoked when he fell. Then lukewarm on Rondo but happy it was a PG. Then more trades..Actual pick: Rajon Rondo (traded)
2005: Wayne Simien. Apparently i dont evaluate PFs' translating to the pros. Was very into Wayne. Actual pick: Nate Robinson (traded)
2004: Andre Iguodala and im still **** pissed about it. He turned out exactly the way he was projected and would have fit perfectly. Actual pick: Luol Deng (traded)
2003: Boris Diaw. Another big with playmaking ability. Liked Banks and Gaines but with them gone Boris was my man. He came around eventually. Actual pick: Zarko Cabarkapa
2002: Melvin Ely. Really wanted Chris Wilcox, probly woulda taken Ely. Didnt know anything about Amare. My expert analysis of PFs again. Actual pick: Amare Stoudemire.

Bout as far back as i can remember. I suck.

2015. Zinger/Frank/Cameron Payne

2014. Stauksus

2013. Noel/Len

2012. Lamb

I'd fire me.

Pretty much this actually. Though I don't watch college ball ever, and I have barely started watching Draft Express scouting reports. IN 2013 I wanted McLemore too though. I have always wanted the next big SG, and I'm happy we got that in Booker. :D
