The Phoenix Suns plan to add former Clippers assistant and Knicks head coach Mike Woodson to Igor Kokoskov’s staff, according to 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s John Gambadoro.

Woodson spent time with Kokoskov on the coaching staff of the Detroit Pistons in the 2003-04 season, where they won an NBA Championship.

Woodson was the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks from 2004-10 and the New York Knicks from 2012-14. His total NBA head coaching record is 315-365.

In three different seasons, Woodson has coached a team to at least 47 wins. From 2009-2010, Woodson won 100 games over two seasons with Atlanta, a team led by former Suns swingman Joe Johnson, Josh Smith and Al Horford.

Despite regular season success over two straight years, the Hawks won only one playoff series each year and did not make the Eastern Conference Finals. In 2010, they were swept by the Orlando Magic. Woodson’s contract was set to expire and the Hawks elected not to re-sign him, hiring Larry Drew.

Woodson was an assistant under former Suns head coach Mike D’Antoni in New York, and in mid-March of 2012, he was announced as the interim coach after D’Antoni resigned.

Following a record of 18-6 under Woodson, the Knicks named Woodson the team’s full-time head coach. In that first season, the Knicks won 54 games, the most New York had won since 1995. Still, though, Woodson could not get to the Eastern Conference Finals, losing in the semifinals to the Indiana Pacers in six games.

After a disappointing 37-win season the next year, Woodson was fired and joined the Clippers under Doc Rivers in September of 2014. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Woodson was leaving the Clippers on May 15.

In New York, Woodson coached current Suns center Tyson Chandler.

Woodson has been a coach in the NBA since 1996. He played in the league from 1980-91.

The Suns’ head coaching job is the first for the 46-year-old Kokoskov, who had been an NBA assistant coach since 2000.

I had a weird feeling he’d end up here after leaving the Clippers. I like the hire. Brings some head coaching experience to the bench for Igor, and he has a good reputation as a defense guy. It may also be worth mentioning that Al Horford developed under Woodson and got his first All Star appearance with him there.

It's a solid but not sexy hire, which is just fine. I guess he's that vet which the front office would be comfortable having around

Interesting. He once upon a time led Arkansas in knocking out Arizona in the final 4 (Damon Stoudamire and company) with 29, 13, 5. 2 and 1.

Then he led them to the title by beating Grant Hill and Duke.

Not very exciting either. Aside from being a decent player in his own regard, his coaching history isn't really that strong either. Hopefully he has the player development chops we need

Worked with Kokoskov in the championship year in Detroit and won 50 games with both the teams he head coached and is defensive focus.

He must be the Pistons player they were talking about....he was on the championship team too. He also must be pretty well thought of, as it sounds like he was George Karl's top assistant and then Frank Vogel hired him. Obviously none of those teams were too successful but Kokoskov obviously must think highly of him too.

In February, ESPN reported Williamson was the “overwhelming favorite” to take over as the Kings interim head coach if George Karl was fired during the season. The Kings waited until after the season ended in April to fire Karl, then hired former Memphis Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger.

In Orlando, Williamson joins the staff of Vogel, a respected coach around the league who led the Indiana Pacers to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2013 and 2014.

So we'd have 3 coaches from the Detroit championship team I like how that sounds in theory.

Not a high bar to reach... but at least Woodson was an OK coach in the league.

I believe Woodson would be a great addition. In fact, he is the person I wanted as a HC.
So we could have a briliant HC with young ideas and a vet assistant coach with a mind for defensive tasks. He could take over if needed, which I hope is never.

Interesting stuff about his thoughts on Kokoskov and why he didn't think it was a good idea to stay on staff.

We're in an weird Matrix.
People maybe will start raving about Doncic's athleticism, TJ Warren's passing or Dragan's great mindset.
