The De'Anthony Melton thread

Drafted in the middle of the 2nd round (#46) by the Rockets, he was lauded as an excellent defensive guard with a developing but still shakey 3PT shot. I don't really buy his high end upside but if he can get his 3PT shot to be halfway decent, he should have strong role player potential.
This clip came out 6 days ago lol

Here's a better question. What team do you think he plays for next season?

I think he is the most likely PG to be dealt if we trade for one, though I am not sure his value is that high considering so many passed on him in the draft. Everyone calls the pick a steal but teams passed on him for a reason....though I'm guessing that is moreso because most teams are set at PG and he didn't play last year. Summer league probably helped his value.
I don't really expect us to trade for a real starting caliber PG though. Not that we won't try, but I don't see who that I figure is available.

We've been looking for a starting-calibre PG for a while. I have no confidence we'll get one, certainly not before the start of 2019 free agency

One of the reasons team passed on him was because he was being investigated by ncaa, I believe on if he took money from some agents. Before that they were saying he was possibly a first rounder. As a rocket fan I watched him in the summer league and was excited to see his growth with the rockets. He reminds me of Beverly with a higher ceiling who was undrafted. He has very good defense and seems fearless. Melton is probably 4-5 years away though from being a starter. A lot of rocket fans liked what they saw out of Melton.
The trade really doesn’t do much for either team though and nothing to get really excited about. Rockets got rid of Anderson but picked up knight. Both seem pretty untradable. There’s upside for both players but it would be surprising.
At least Phoenix get a young potential talent. Rockets save up what 5 mil (difference between Anderson and Knight contract) per year which isn’t that much anyways. I don’t have much faith in marquis chris .

First off, love Melton. Love the potential and defensive activity we saw during SL, where I was able to see him live, and the potential we saw on offense. He's a work in progress, but I think this deal was great for you guys...even though you did have to take on Anderson without getting a pick.
ANYWAYS...
For those interested, I'm going to be doing a deep dive on Melton's SL performance on Twitter throughout the day. Switching from Draft stuff for the moment because there is not much film I haven't looked at from last year, and the HS / AAU stuff on Synergy is not the best gauge for skill (although I have been digging through that as well).
Going to be doing clips and Synergy stats throughout the day, but probably more clip based just to show what he can do. Synergy stats are not kind to him on defense actually, but he was damn good. I started with the Rockets / Pacers game, which I was actually at, and will be going forward from there game by game I think.
First tweet here (it's a thread) --
*For those who don't know, I worked in the front office before law school scouting, working with contracts, helping with coaches, etc, so I have a good eye (or at least an experienced one - I'd say good based on the reviews I've received on the reports I've sent teams, but yeah...that's another story). Not sure how much longer I'll be doing the breakdowns for, but if you are interested, check it out (and the site) and give me a follow!

Whoa. Funny. We ditch the loser of the last competition between two draft picks who play the same position, only to start playing the same game again.
Maybe Okobo hasn't impressed?
I can't say this isn't a good move, but man are we weird.

I know teams passed on him because he didn't play last year because of the FBI thing. I saw people projecting him in the first round earlier too which I thought was odd considering he wasn't projected high the year before so I didn't understand how he could move up after not playing that year. Where he got drafted ended up seeming about right at the end to me, even though it may have been too low based on his talent, but no one had seen him play in over a year. His freshman year he couldn't shoot.

Depth and competition isn't a bad thing. They can both get minutes. Chances are both won't end up starter quality. I'm pretty sure we're very high on Okobo.
I mean heck, look at Philly's draft. They had Simmons, Fultz, and TJ McConnell and still drafted Shamet and Milton.

I like that Suns are collecting guards with good defensive potential. They need great defenders to pair with Book.

Just from watching highlights my hot take is Meltons shot reminds me of Gilbert Arenas.

Love Melton's potential, hopefully he can develop into our franchise PG or be a super sub off the bench.
Still want to go after Lillard or Kemba or Rozier.

Looks offensively a bit further along than Shaq but I really hope Shaq gets the first shot at it as he earned that at the end of last season and in SL this year.

Are you assuming Melton is ahead of Okobo even though we took Okobo in the draft at a spot we could have taken Melton?

Nah I just think Melton and Shaq have similar games so it will be one or the other. I think Elie gets minutes either way.

Will he be a 2 way contract?

I think there was a report earlier that they were going to give him a 4 year contract with guaranteed money the first year or two, probably similar to Okobo's, so, if that's the case, no.

I guess that means no Canaan, or perhaps he will get the 2 way as a show of good faith after his injury.

I have kind of figured he gets the 2 way and if we don't feel comfortable with our PG rotation and don't add anyone I won't be surprised if we waive Daniels and give Canaan a 1 year deal.
