How many Cs are better than Ayton now, and how many after 2 years?

Post#1 » by bwgood77 » Sat Dec 12, 2020 10:13 pm

Just curious, with all the complaints, where people would rank him right now and who is currently better and who was better after 2 years.

Off the top of my head, I will say:

Jokic
Embiid
Towns
Gobert
Nurkic
Vucevic
Bam (if you consider a C)
Sabonis (if you consider a C)
Adams is close only because he is so tough and experienced

This puts him top 10

After 2 years:

Jokic
Towns

So this puts him top 3 after 2 years...maybe Embiid would have been, but he was injured. Cousins was close after 2 years if he was counted.

Obviously I didn't consider AD a C.

I like your list ....

I would say he is the 9th or 10th best center right now

In two years, with Chris Paul at the helm I see him as the 4th best Center behind Embiid, joker, and Kat

Right now I’m not sure he will be better than those all stars

The main reason I put Nurkic, Vucevic and Sabonis ahead were passing...to some extent Bam too. Plus Sabonis is very efficient and Vucevic hits 3s.

I am not sure who he will pass, but if he gets to the line more, gets more assists and improves defensively (mainly help D at rim) and also hits more 3s, it will help a lot.

I think Ayton is better than Adams, so that would put him #9 on your list. Great position at 22 yo.

But there are a group of Cs that are on the same tier and Ayton needs to improve to get to a higher level. I hope he does it this season.

Is Ayton better than Drummond already? I am not sure...he is better at some things and worse on other areas, but they are on the same tier for now IMO.

I think Ayton is better than Myles Turner, Ibaka or Valenciunas, but the gap with them is not THAT big.

Agree with your list Bdub. After this season, I'm hoping he is top 5. After two years, he's close to KAT, Embiid, and Jokic. Those 3 though are jus tin a tier of their own.

Honestly, I would rather have a center who puts up 10/9/2 with great interior defense than 18/12, few free throws, and subpar interior defense. Ayton gets his points and rebounds but the rest of his game is sorely lacking. The thought of paying Ayton $25M is stupid. Spend that on another playmaker and get two serviceable big men.

With that said, Ayton is not a top 10 defensive center which means he's not a top 10 center.

Yeah, when people say "This year he can put up 25 and 13" or whatever, I care less about that and more about the help defense and rim protection.

I think only in some cherry picked stats...like DFG%....where a lot of that was him switching onto guards and altering their shot.

While that's nice to have, it doesn't count when he lets a guy go right past him or overall defensive impact. Then you also have things that are not counted in the stats like offenses not wanting to take it inside against a great defensive rim protector and will settle for more jump shots.

Judging by the eye test, I hope we trade him by the All Star break. He's a lot more naturally gifted than most centers. With minimum effort, he can look pretty decent in the boxscore.Far as motor, hunger, drive....I'd rank him dead last.I don't ever see him being more than a 3rd-4th option player.I'd like to see the Suns get a haul for him.Maybe use him in a package to bring back a true 3rd piece to go with Book & CP3 this year.
