Thought I'd open an all star thread as well.
I used to really like this before gimmicks took over and stars stopped caring about it. But I will be tuning in of course. I'm just not sure I will make it to the end before falling asleep.
This is still my favourite all star game.
Iverson and Mutombo leading the comeback for the huge underdog East in 2001. Down 19 in the 4th.
Another nice moment:

So I wonder if CP just sits it out, or plays with the injury?

Depends how bad it is. Hopefully he just jammed his thumb (which every bball player has done), hurts a lot but isn't really a major issue.

This is a weekend off of Basketball. All the gimmick contests they have added have lost their luster. Those first few yrs of the slam dunking were special… the dudes took it personal…..
Bit of trivia…. First NBA dunk champ (84) was our own Larry Nance, but DrJ notched the victory in the first and last ABA contest (76) over David Sky Walker Thompson, and they did it at halftime. Apparently, the players organized an impromptu contest in 75 at halftime all star game, according to some of the youtubing ‘comments’
But then there’s this, a ‘regional’ contest of sorts
;t=0s
NBA did some wacky stuff in the late 70s having a season long 32 player horse contest … with Pistol Pete winning the inaugural vrs our very own…. Paul….Westphal ( I can still remember our gametime announcer having that pause)
And I vaguely remember this
Good recap here
http://20secondtimeout.blogspot.com/2009/02/abas-unsung-heroes.htmlDirt old memories jarred by the mighty historian…. Google the Great

Does not surprise me that Westphal was there. The times that I could watch the famous 3OT game 5 in 76, I am in awe at the crazy shots Westphal was hitting during crunch time.
This was the first dunk contest I watched.
I really did think at the time that he was completely blind

I just noticed there are 4 teams for the Rising Stars Challenge? How does this work? Is there a mini tourney? Which team do you like the best? I would say I think it's hard to go against Haliburton, but you have Ball, Mobley and even Edwards then who knows how much better Cade, Jalen Green, etc, look only against rookie/soph/g league stars.
I think Isiah's team easily looks the best. Too many PGs on Worthy's
Rising Stars Challenge rosters
The Rising Stars Challenge will feature the presence of G League Ignite players for the first time. Four top prospects playing for the Ignite join 12 players from both the 2020 and 2021 NBA draft classes in making up the 28 players who will participate in the annual showcase for its stars of tomorrow as part of All-Star Weekend. The four teams will be coached by Hall of Famers Rick Barry, Gary Payton, Isiah Thomas and James Worthy.
Team Barry
Cade Cunningham, Detroit Pistons
Dyson Daniels
Evan Mobley, Cleveland Cavaliers
Isaac Okoro, Cleveland Cavaliers
Alperen Sengun, Houston Rockets
Jae'Sean Tate, Houston Rockets
Franz Wagner, Orlando Magic
Team Isiah
Precious Achiuwa, Toronto Raptors
Desmond Bane, Memphis Grizzlies
Saddiq Bey, Detroit Pistons
Anthony Edwards, Minnesota Timberwolves
Tyrese Haliburton, Sacramento Kings
Jaden Hardy
Isaiah Stewart, Detroit Pistons
Team Payton
LaMelo Ball, Charlotte Hornets
Scottie Barnes, Toronto Raptors
Ayo Dosunmu, Chicago Bulls
Chris Duarte, Indiana Pacers
Scoot Henderson
Jaden McDaniels, Minnesota Timberwolves
Davion Mitchell, Sacramento Kings
Team Worthy
Cole Anthony, Orlando Magic
MarJon Beauchamp
Josh Giddey, Oklahoma City Thunder
Jalen Green, Houston Rockets
Herbert Jones, New Orleans Pelicans
Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia 76ers
Jalen Suggs, Orlando Magic

Paul showed up with a hand brace. Bad news that it wasn't just a stinger, good news that he's gonna play and just a brace I guess

Get rid of the dunk contest. I unfortunately watched it and it was horrible. It needs to be dropped or changed.
Maybe just play videos of the best in game dunks and have a panel vote on them.

ASG is horrible as well. Listen to Kobe and CP3 in above videos. Just get rid of the all star weekend and play some mid-season tournament or whatever they have discussed.

The ASG was fun with the new format last season. I’m hoping it will be like that this year too.
It’s gonna start off with no defense then everyone probably locks in hopefully.

Kobe/CP3 would’ve been crazy together on the Lakers, glad that trade didn’t go down lol.

Yes, it was awful. I can't believe I took the time to watch people miss dunks and Cole took WAY too much time to get ready. I almost turned it off before it started. Seems like back in the old days they couldn't miss a dunk and if they did that was either it or you took a big penalty and they just moved on. They didn't try as many gimmicks, but they were still difficult dunks where they would slam it down. There have been some other great ones in recent years like some of Aaron Gordon's or maybe LaVine's but it has gradually gotten worse.
They keep throwing more gimmicks and everything into All Star Saturday night and the more gimmicks, and the more changes to the dunk contest, the worse it gets....all these ideas...

I never thought they would compliment each other as much as others. Kobe was a bit
too selfish. I remember when Nash went there I felt the same way and suddenly Kobe wanted to prove he could pass too and started getting more assists, handling even more, and Nash became a spot up shooter.
Even though CP3 has coexisted with Booker well and kind of with Harden, I don't think him and Kobe would have ultimately meshed well. Not to say they wouldn't have been good, because both compete, but I don't think it would be a situation where the sum is greater than the parts, like CP3 has done in Phx or did in New Orleans or sometimes in LA.
I do wonder if Kobe would have gotten tired of hearing CP3 all the time like he has worn on others too.

It's tough to have more than one guy on the team like that. CP3 is a true old school, alpha floor general. He demands competitiveness down to the last second of every possession and he'll be vocal about it. Not saying Book isn't like that but he's just not on that kind of level. I think there's very few players really like that. A lot of players talk to talk, say they are super competitive and all but there's levels to this. Just thinking about it, MJ had it, Kobe had it, CP3 has it. Jimmy Butler has it. I think Lebron has it. I think Draymond has it too.

Well I don't think who he drafted had anything to do with the finals. Anyway, we could use Haliburton (or Bane) now and probably in the future. This guy posts some good stuff sometimes but also some odd stuff, but I do think many feel Haliburton was a pretty obvious pick so I don't know if this tweet does much. Obviously you are right though in that Jones does a lot of stuff right (primarily trading for Paul and hiring Monty).
