The absolute funniest part is Frank... Frank of all people had the most positive comment calling him the 'best shooter in the draft'

**** I missed that one. Props

I didn't know who he was so I don't think I even commented that night. I do remember about two weeks into his rookie year saying I really liked the dude, you could just tell that he knew what he was doing out there. Kind of the anti Josh Jackson where like 10 games in I was like '**** this guy's is actually bad'

I was damn sure we'd get brandon clarke in this draft.

I still wish it had been Clarke, and I stand by my take then that Cam is just a younger TJ Warren.

I wanted Clarke too, I even said Cam could be a bit of a reach but I loved the Saric trade and I still do but it looks like we are limiting his minutes for “reasons”.

The meltdown over Cam and joy over Jerome is pretty funny in retrospect.

Loved the Dario + 1st trade down but I didn't like the Cam draft. I was all in on Clarke and Cam was a pretty big reach at the time. Throw in the fact that he was a relatively old rookie, had a history of hip issues and we had just come off one of the worst seasons in franchise history, a lot of us expected/hoped we would swing for a high ceiling prospect with the potential to be a star. Instead we got someone who was closer to a complementary player.

I still have concerns about his durability and injury history but aside from that, he's exceed all expectations for me

I was disappointed we didn't take Clarke but my saving grace was that we needed shooting and you can never have too many shooters. But the fact everyone was shocked including analysts, etc, didn't give you the best feel.

He's ended up a solid pick. Only a couple of really solid players taken after him off the top of my head...Herro and PJ Washington....and then Clarke has been pretty good.

I don't want to totally overreact after one great game like he had last year where a slower big was guarding him that I figured he would exploit, but it was nice to see. A 29 pt game by him and a 27 one by Mikal already in the first 7 games, both on really high efficiency. It's nice to see these other guys stepping up. We are going to need it.

People were high on Clarke mostly because of advanced stats similar to those of Zion though one was obviously going to be a star, the other a role player. Cam J was an unknown to most, which led to these funny reactions. I personally wanted badly Ja out of this draft. After the draft I watched a game by Cam vs Duke where he scored like 10pts in a row and led me to believe he could be a good player in the league.

I remember watching a game from Coby White to make some scouting about him and I ended thinking that Cam Johnson was the better player out there.

Then I saw that he was really old for a college player and that he had some physical problem in his hips that probably would limit his upside...so I thought that he wasn't an option at #6 or even at Top #20.

But James Jones did it right and got him at #11, an absolute steal. He is already an starter in this league and he keeps improving every year.

Nobody should feel bad, even Cam Johnson himself (and other NBA player Theo Pinson) said he expected to get drafted somewhere in the 20s lol. I still think Suns could’ve taken Clarke and then drafted Johnson with the pick wasted on Jerome.

I think he would have went 21 to OKC. They were still in win now mode and desperately needed shooting at the F spot.

He's hard to actually predict though because if it weren't for the hip concerns he's a top 15 pick even at his age. So there could have been other teams who were comfortable with the medicals and swooped in and picked him. Shooting is often over drafted. I remember doing some research after the draft and everyone really liked his game and personality it was really just the age and health that were the downgrades.

In my defense I still think Jones hasn't made it clear he's that great of a GM. It might be the case that we never find out for a long, long time as the 3 players McD drafted are the 3 most important players on the team. I do think Jones would have drafted Luka though, based on how he's constructed the team around perimeter play (like Cam Jo, hiring Monty, etc.).

pros- CP3, CamJo, Rubio, Landale (diamond in the rough), Crowder, Monty Williams
cons- no Haliburton, traded Jalen Smith for free, traded Warren for free (well, he hasn't played in two years lol), traded Melton for free

I think McD's moves were just the Bledsoe acquisition, and then our core 3 guys. Everything else seems to have been an appalling failure like missing on Bender/Chriss/Jackson (3!! lotto picks), which imo set us back massively and we are still feeling those misses today because of how slim our bench looks.

McD had better highs but his lows were more often than Jones. Missing on Bender/Chriss/Jackson consecutively is unforgivable...Our team's depth would look so much better had he hit on just one of those picks, but he didn't. It took me a while to understand that, as well as realizing the value of the draft and finding cheap talent (either in the draft or undrafted), which is why I get really annoyed about Jones giving away Jalen Smith. But Jones has more + moves than - ones, or rather his moves are usually additions or neutral ones than negatives.

I haven't agreed with all Jones personel decisions but I do think he's done a very good job creating an environment for winning. I value this at a macro level for an organization, you need a strong healthy foundation. I think mcd had more a fantasy sports approach where it was about singular talent and 'winning trades'. I think Jones puts more importance in acquiring players who fit with Monty, want to be here, and understand and accept their role on the team. So I think he passes on guys in trades and the draft that may be talented but just don't fit for one of the above reasons.
